1. What is the 14C age of the three samples?2. Which of the samples has the most 14C atoms per gram of sample carbon?3. Calculate the calibrated age ranges for these samples using one of the programs available on the web (e.g. Calib; http://calib.qub.ac.uk/calib/ or Oxcal http://c14.arch.ox.ac.uk/embed.php?File=oxcal.html). Try using error of ±25 years and ±50 years to see how that affects the date ranges.4. What would be the D14C and D14C values for these samples - assume you measured them in 2014?

• Corals that grew during the year 1900 off the coast of Hawaii, Galapagos, and the Great Barrier Reef contain 14C Fraction Modern values of 0.945, 0.924 and 0.950, respectively.
• • a) Now calculate the ∆14C values for the carbon in seawater from which
these corals precipitated. (Use the true 14C half-life of 5730 y in your calculations).
• b) Calculate the reservoir ages (equivalent to the radiocarbon age for the seawater carbon) for each of these coral sites. (Remember to use the Libby 14C half-life of 5568 y in your calculations).

• 3a) The Fraction Modern values for coexisting planktonic and benthic foraminifera from a horizon in an ocean sediment core from the full glacial period were 0.11 and 0.100, respectively. What was the radiocarbon age difference between these coexisting benthic and planktonic foraminifera?
• • b) The age difference measured for benthic and planktonic
foraminifera in the Atlantic ocean today is 350 radiocarbon years. If you want to measure the difference between your answer above in part 3a, and 350 years, your AMS has to measure with precision equivalent to 1/3 of this difference. Calculate what that precision is equal to in Fraction Modern.
