How does a copper fungicide work?

Copper fungicides are protectant/preventative products. The copper product must be applied onto

the plant surface prior to the disease occurring.

Copper fungicides inhibit fungal spore germination and mycelial growth. Control is provided by

the free copper ions (Cu+2) released from the applied copper.

How effectively disease is controlled depends on the quality of the formulation and adequacy of

its coverage.

Biologically Active Copper

Effective disease control is the determining factor in choosing a copper fungicide, NOT metallic

copper alone.

Crystals of the copper compound slowly dissolve in contact with water releasing parts per million

levels of free cupric ions, the “bioactive” form.

The crystalline particles adhere to the leaf surface and act as ion reservoirs, continuously

releasing Cu+2 ions (BioActive™ copper) and forming a protective barrier to prevent infection.

Copper fungicides vary in the efficiency of Cu+2 ion release which effects performance.

Available (BioActive™) copper reflects the amount of free Cu+2 ions from a copper fungicide.

The more BioActive™ copper in contact with the leaf surface, the more effectively disease is

controlled.

The amount of free copper ions available for disease control is determined by 3 main factors: the source of technical copper, the formulation and rainfastness. Kocide® Blue Xtra™ is a unique copper hydroxide formula composed of traditional copper crystals and BioActive™ sub-micron particles (0.1 µ to 1 µ). Copper hydroxide is the most effective source of copper ions (Cu+2) for the control and prevention of plant diseases. Generally there is no advantage in having copper particles less than 1 to 2 microns as they tend to be lost with poor rainfastness. Kocide® Blue Xtra™ has a patented co-formulant which holds the BioActive™ particles in a non-phytotoxic protective matrix (film). This Matrix prevents agglomeration of sub-micron particles to ensure uniform coverage, superior retention, maximum biological activity, and plant safety.Kocide® Blue Xtra™ has an optimum crystalline copper structure to ensure uniform particle size, maximise performance, and provide residual activity.

Copper Particle Surface Area

• Measurement of surface area is m2/g of the particles.

• Particles with small surface areas have less area available for the release of copper ions (Cu+2).

• Particles with small surface area (copper oxychlorides, copper oxides and copper sulphates) need to have much smaller particle sizes to release Cu+2 ions. These products have low surface area to volume ratio due to the block like structure.

• Kocide® Blue Xtra™ particles are crystalline in shape giving the optimum surface area to volume ratio and more sites to release Cu+2 ions.

Particle size

• Particle size (in microns) should be measured upon dispersion in water.

• Too large a particle size gives less surface area and poorer rainfastness.

• Generally there is no advantage in having particles less than 1 to 2 microns.

The end result of this is that if you do not have a way of retaining the smaller particles, then they

will be lost due to run-off. Kocide® Blue Xtra™ has the patented co-formulation that binds small

particles to the crop and makes them available for disease control.

to measure, as 1 kg equals 1 litre allowing measurement by weight or

volume.
