Editor’s noteWelcome to a bumper October edition of YOU!

It’s Breast Cancer Month and with it being the most common cancer for New Zealand women, it’s certainly our focus for this edition.

What I took from the wom-en’s stories that we feature is that dealing with breast cancer is not the end – it is a journey, not always a nice one, but a journey nonetheless.

These women are honest, brave, positive and realistic and they talk about their experiences, I am sure, in the hope that other women are vigilant with mammograms and self-checking.

Thirty per cent of eligible women are not enrolled for free breast cancer screening. That’s a percentage that is too high and reminds me that it is something I need to do – enrol.

Thank you to Kaye Kenne-dy and June Bruhns for their stories.

Kaye Kennedy is a bright bubbly 51-year-old, a picture of health and energy. Her ready smile, however, hides a secret. Kay is a breast cancer survivor and shares with reporter Sue Newman her 18-month journey from finding a lump in her breast, through sur-gery, to walking down the path to recovery.

Breast cancer: A life-changing journeyFebruary 2014, Kaye Kennedy was 50, fit, healthy and looking forward to complet-ing Marlborough’s annual Grape Ride cycle event, but in a few seconds, her life changed for ever.

Six months earlier she’d undergone a mammogram and had been given the all clear, but one morning in the shower she felt a small lump in her breast.

“I thought, ‘oh my God how didn’t I know this was there?’ It seemed quite ob-vious, but I wasn’t really worried because I’d had a mammogram so I just thought it was hormonal or a cyst,” she said.

The knowledge gained through working for years in a medical practice meant Kay knew she couldn’t simply forget about the lump. She needed to get it checked.

“The doctor said she didn’t think it was anything to worry about, it was mobile and smooth, but just to be on the safe side I needed to have another mammogram and a diagnostic ultra sound.”

Kaye was still not concerned. The doctor’s words meant she could

call husband Mark and tell him that there was nothing to worry about; that the next appointment was simply a precaution.

But as the weeks ticked by and no appointment had been made, niggling doubts set in. She rang her doctor’s sur-gery again and finally had an appointment. April 3, the day they were heading to the Grape Ride.

Still unconcerned, Kaye and Mark made a detour to Cashmere Radiology on their way north.

Partway through the tests Kay realised things were not going well. The sonogra-pher spent long minutes measuring and

checking readings. Then she was told she’d need a core biopsy. Her world stopped.

“I really wanted it done that day but they couldn’t so we decided we’d still go away for the weekend. That was really hard, but it was good to be with other people,” she said.

Her biopsy was carried out the following week and the waiting began.

“Then my doctor rang and said, ‘look Kaye it’s a probable malignancy’. That was the worst day. You immediately think this is going to be the end for me. It was all downhill from there. I knew I could

cope with being ill and having surgery and treatment, the worst thing was knowing I would have to tell my family,” she said.

With surgery looming, Kaye had to find a way to tell daughters Gemma, 25, and Livvie, 19, that their mum had cancer.

“The thing I tried to impress on my girls was that breast cancer is not necessarily a death sentence. I knew it wasn’t a big

lump and I knew we’d got it early.”The lump might have been small, but

the cancer was aggressive and several lymph nodes were affected.

“I asked the breast surgeon, ‘why me?’ and she told me I was just one of the unlucky ones whose marble came out of the barrell.”

Deciding whether to have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy was difficult, but Kaye opted for the total removal of her breast, knowing that otherwise she would always worry that the cancer would come back.

“I’m so pleased I made that decision, but I’m pleased I had a choice. My oncologist told me that surgery would be my friend.”

With her surgery set for April 28, Kaye felt an element of control return to her life. Prior to that she’d lived from test to test. Now she had a clear path – surgery, treatment, recovery.

The surgery, she discovered, was the easy part. Coming to terms with her changed body was more difficult.

“It was when I looked in the mirror when I had that first shower, that was really hard, but you seem to adjust to it very quickly.”

Her return home meant the start of chemotherapy – something she described as six months of hell.

“When you are going through it you don’t realise, but afterwards you look back and understand how unwell you felt.”

Being able to have her chemo in Ashbur-ton was a Godsend, Kaye said.

“Before I had it I worried. You see things on TV, but it’s not really like that now.

From P5“There have been so many advances

in ways to stop nausea. The four lots of one-off treatments every three weeks were probably the worst. Day one I’d feel really grotty, then I’d feel as though I had a hang-over for three days and for two weeks I’d feel quite good.”

That regime was followed by 12, once-a-week treatments.

For her, regular exercise was part of her chemo-coping strategy, that and being able to work as and when she could.

With chemo came hair loss and, along with her diagnosis, surgery, chemo and radiation, were watershed moments in her cancer journey, Kaye said.

Radiation treatment (16 daily treatments over a period of three-and-a-half weeks) was to prevent her cancer returning at the mastectomy site.

“When you lose your hair, it’s like seeing yourself with only one boob for the first time and it’s hard for a while. It comes out in clumps and it gets into everything, including your dinner.”

Rather than go bald gradually, Kaye opted to shave her head and buy a wig. Putting that on for the first time was a big step towards feeling “normal” again, she said.

Her straight dark hair, came back white and curly initially, but regrowth returned to normal relatively quickly, in time for a wig-less wedding on Waitangi Day this year.

Kaye had all 22 axillary lymph nodes removed, along with her breast, and a small number of these were found to be positive for cancer. Because of this she had to have staging scans which involved a bone scan and a CT scan.

“And that was terrifying because I really didn’t know what they’d find,” she said.

They were clear. When you’re living through cancer

treatment, every milestone is special and for Kaye, Christmas last year is one she will always remember, it marked the end of her radiation regime and the start of life after cancer.

She knows it will be a long journey, marked off in three-monthly checks, stretching to six monthly after two clear

years.“And that’s not easy. It’s an anxious time

because every ache or pain or every time I feel a little unwell I worry.”

That’s where having an understanding GP helps, someone to talk to who understands

what you’re going through and who can offer reassurance, she said.

She has now travelled about 18 months down the cancer trail, but says it is always with her.

“It’s like the elephant in the room. I had

a lot of anger in those first few weeks. At times I wanted to throw things. Today it is still sitting there at the back of my mind. There are days when I don’t think about it much, but not often and I’ve been told it just takes time.”

While a cancer diagnosis is life changing, there are many positives that can come out of it too, she said.

“I don’t get so worried about small things now. Something like this brings your relationships even closer. Mark has been

fantastic, he’s been to every appointment with me and I can’t imagine how you’d get through this on your own.”

Prior to her diagnosis Kaye believed she and her family lived a healthy lifestyle and like most people, believed she was doing everything she could to keep illness at bay.

“I took my health and my body for grant-ed. One good thing to come out of this is that we’re now a lot more aware of what goes into our mouths and we make sure we exercise regularly. It’s everything in moder-ation now. My philosophy is if it’s fresh and it’s not processed then eat it in mouthfuls. I’m doing everything I can to make sure it doesn’t come back.”

A health scare makes you take stock of your life. It’s important to have events to look ahead to and to celebrate each mile-stone, she said.

“I felt really strongly that my body had let me down. You lose the innocence of think-ing nothing bad will happen to your body. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody, but people going through this can have a good ending; you can grow from it.”

And she’s learned the importance of vig-ilance. A clear mammogram doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to self examine your breasts.

“I’m the perfect example of something that seemed so normal but that turned out not to be. If you don’t feel comfortable, push, push for more information. Doctors don’t have a crystal ball, they do their best but get as much information as you can about your options.”

Kaye is comfortable with her new body. She doesn’t plan to have a breast recon-struction. She’s happy with her prosthesis saying that when she’s dressed you can’t tell the real breast from the fake.

“I don’t think about having only one breast.”

In many ways she says she’s in a better place today.

“I’ve now put myself as a priority. I know it’s important I have time for me and I’ve learned to say ‘no’.

“Cancer teaches you that. You have to be focused on yourself to be able to get through it and to manage it.”

THE FACTS

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

FREE MAMMOGRAMS

– Breast cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand women.– Today eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.– This year 650 women will most likely die from breast cancer.– Yet 30 per cent of eligible women are not enrolled in free screening.– And 60 per cent of young women don’t know the signs beyond a lump.

– A new lump, or thickening of the skin in the breast, armpit or collarbone area

– Unusual pain that won’t go away– Nipple change, such as a newly inverted or retracted nip-

ple– Skin change, including change in the skin of the breast,

eg colour, dimpling, puckering or reddening or flaky, scaly skin on the nipple or areola

– A change in the breasts shape or size– Nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing

While most cases of breast cancer occur in women over 50 years old, around 400 New Zealand women under the

age of 44 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Much more treatable if detected early, around 85 per cent

of women are still alive five years after diagnosis. It is advised that women check their breasts monthly from

the age of 20 onwards. The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foun-dation recommends women “get to know their normal”. If any

changes are noticed, see your GP.

The free mammogram programme is available to women over 45 with no symptoms. Younger women’s breast tissue is denser so mammograms are not generally used for screening women under 40.

When June Bruhns headed out to undergo her final free mammogram she expected everything to go well, just as it had every other time.

Unfortunately, that was not the case.At the age of 69, on September 29, 2011,

June was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Just a few short weeks after her mam-mogram she received “the callback”.

June and husband Bob made the trip to Christchurch where further mammograms were performed. The same day June spoke

to the surgeon on duty and had an ultrasound and a biopsy taken.

“We got the bad news a week or so later,” she said. “It was pretty scary.”

Never having had any abnormal mam-mograms and with no family history of

Four years ago June Bruhns’ life was turned upside down when it was discovered she had breast cancer. Now, 72 years old and the picture of health, June shares the story of her unexpected journey with YOU’s Caitlin Porter.

breast cancer, June was taken aback by her diagnosis.

She had what is called lobular cancer, one of the two most common types, which begins in the milk-producing glands, other-wise known as lobules, rather than the milk ducts. It can spread or remain in-situ – for

June it was the latter. The mother of three described the can-

cerous lump as being nestled in the “cul-de-sacs off her milk ducts”.

Not always picked up by a mammogram, June said she was lucky to have it detected so early.

Opting to have a mastectomy, June was thankful that the cancer was only detected in one breast.

The process was quick and within a month of her diagnosis June’s surgery was complete.

While there are many options in terms of a breast reconstruction, June opted to not have one. It was not recommended for her and she admitted it was not something she was concerned about – she just wanted to be okay.

June’s stay in Christchurch Hospital was brief. In on the Thursday, she was back in her Allenton home by Saturday lunchtime.

An avid golfer, she had to take a break from her favourite sport to recuperate, but other than that her recovery was something of a walk in the park.

“It was quite good, I had a couple of drains and one was in for quite some time,” she said.

“I was lucky I didn’t have to have any radiation or chemotherapy.”

Her follow-up care too, remains relatively simple. June visits a surgeon and oncologist once a year for a physical exam and also takes medication daily.

As a breast cancer survivor June was also eligible for five further free mammograms, her final one will take place next year.

From P11Supported by friends and family, her

husband Bob was by her side through-out the journey, but the process was not always easy on him.

“You start to worry, it’s only natural you don’t know how bad it is going to be,” June said.

“It was a nervous time also for Bob.”Thankfully, one of June’s daughters, Kar-

en, stepped in to help with appointments and trips to Christchurch.

It was helpful for both of them, having had her own breast cancer scare, Karen was clued up on the process.

“You don’t sort of take it all in, she was picking up on things I wasn’t,” June said.

Years before her mother’s diagnosis Kar-en discovered a small lump in her breast, which turned out to be a polyp.

“It was quite a scare,” June said. The support of those close to her,

complemented with the support from the local breast cancer support group, helped June get through the last few years. Upon being made aware of her diagnosis June and Bob immediately got in contact with the Cancer Society and were informed about the group. She has been a devoted member ever since and plans on keeping it that way.

“It is very good. It’s really worthwhile, especially early on, and it’s nice to be there for the newer ones,” she said.

MAMMOGRAMS

This October, Breast Cancer Month, an emo-tional campaign by the NZ Breast Foundation will remind women that finding cancer early through a mammogram, might mean the difference between relief and despair.

The campaign is backed by new data show-ing significantly greater breast cancer survival for women within the free screening age group (45-69) when their tumour is found on a mammogram.

Of women aged 45-69 whose cancer was found on a screening mammogram, 94 per cent were alive five years after diagnosis, and 86 per cent 10 years after diagnosis.

For those women who found their cancer through a lump or other symptom, five-year survival was 80 per cent, and 10-year survival just 68 per cent.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to analyse the survival numbers for the screen-ing age group, and with 12 years of data now available, we think this information is highly significant,” said Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.

The data is from the Auckland Breast Cancer Patient Register, covering 30 per cent of New Zealand’s breast cancer cases, but other re-gions are not expected to vary significantly.

“We sometimes hear people say, ‘Everyone knows about mammograms’.But the fact is, 30 per cent of eligible women aren’t enrolled with the free screening programme and every year another 30,000 women turn 45.

“So our message this October is, get your mammogram – do it for yourself and for your family. Relief is so much better than despair.”

Breast cancer: Give yourself a fighting chanceIt is breast cancer awareness month and statistically eight women are diagnosed every day.

It is the most common cancer, affecting one in 10 women over their lifetime, and it is considered treatable if found early.

Over 600 women die each year of this disease.

Therefore October, also known as Pink Ribbon month, is a time to reflect on those loved ones that we have lost due to breast cancer. It’s a time to remember those spe-cial people that have put up a fight against this disease, coped with the treatment, lived with breast cancer and won, and those that have lost the fight to breast cancer.

It is any woman’s worst nightmare, to be told that the lump or abnormality they have found in their breast is malignant. With that diagnosis they are then faced with a long road ahead to battle this disease.

Pink Ribbon Month is about bringing awareness to women; what to look for and what actions to take and be one step ahead of the disease.

It can get any woman of any age. Finding a lump or abnormality in your breast can be a very frightening experience, but getting it checked as soon as it is detected is crucial and gives a woman a better chance at fighting.

In the early stages of breast cancer there is usually no pain and may be no symp-toms at all. As the cancer progresses the following symptoms may be, a lump in the breast tissue or in the armpit or any breast abnormalities such as any of the following, discharge from the nipple, rash, reddening or dimpling on the breast tissue, a pulled in nipple or a change in the colour, shape or size of the breast tissue. Any unusual

symptoms must be checked out by a doctor straight away.

Women need to embrace getting mam-mograms as part of their womanly health check-up.

A quick procedure that helps to identify any trouble areas with their breast tissue that backs up any questions and queries that may have arisen with self-examina-tions.

Mammogram screening can help to detect breast cancer early – well before a lump can be seen or felt. The risk factors of breast cancer are: being over the age of 50 (70 per cent occurance of breast cancer) family history of breast or ovarian cancer, dense breast tissue, hormonal factors such as early menarche (first period) and late menopause, previous breast issues such as breast cancer in the past, pre-cancer breast

conditions and benign breast disease. It is important to note that most women

that get breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease.

Buying a pink ribbon and donating mon-ey helps to put money towards ongoing research and aiding in understanding more about breast cancer.

Pink ribbon was originally founded in October 1997 by an American citizen, Paul Davidson, to help raise money, awareness and support for breast cancer patients of this disease.

Prevention is considered better than a cure, hence adopting a healthy lifestyle is important, especially as we age, due to the risk of getting breast cancer increasing.

It is important to ensure better health and possible prevention of the disease in trying to reduce the risk factors of the disease.

HEALTHY HABITSHealthy lifestyle habits are really important to put into place with the aim of maintain-ing your wellness and breast tissue health:

1. Consume plenty of water to aid in flush-ing out the accumulating toxins within the body, helping the liver, kidneys and digestive system to cleanse the body efficiently.

2. Exercise regularly, at least 3-4 times a week, as a protective factor to assist and ensure the maintenance of a healthy body weight, as this is an important component to breast health.

3. Minimise refined sugar intake as much

Breast cancer: Give yourself a fighting chanceas possible.

4. Reduce stress wherever possible, which helps give good-quality sleep to support your immunity.

5. Try to drink less or no alcohol at all as alcohol can affect your breast health. Consume no more than 3-4 drinks per week, red wine is preferable due to the antioxidants.

6. Make sure that you start to have reg-ular mammograms from the age of 40 onwards, or earlier if you suffer with lumpy breasts or have general concerns with your breast tissue health.

7. Eat the right foods to improve the body’s chances of preventing the occur-rence of breast cancer: selenium-rich foods, bright-coloured fruits and vege-tables, broccoli and cauliflower, onions, ginger, soy (in its natural form), seaweed and omega 3 rich foods and plenty of herbs liked thyme, basil and oregano.

These foods all carry components that can prevent cancer cells from forming and further developing, are anti-inflam-matory and have the ability to boost the immunity within the body and reported-ly help to prevent cancer.

8. Including herbal teas is important for their reported cancer-fighting proper-ties, especially Japanese green tea and mint teas.

Purchase a pink ribbon and help support breast cancer research and awareness in the month of October.

PINK SORBET IN A WAFFLE CONEThe ingredients in this recipe have been chosen purely for their health

benefits in fighting and preventing breast cancer as a disease. The

raspberries and cranberries are considered to contain large numbers

of polyphenols chemicals that have the ability to stimulate the mechanisms of

elimination of carcinogenic (cancer-caus-ing) substances.

2 fresh bananas 1C frozen raspberries 1/4 C cranberries juice 2 waffle cones

– Blend the ingredients together in a food processor until smooth.

– Place in a semi-shallow dish and freeze for at least four hours.

– To serve: Take out of the freezer at least 20 to 25 minutes before serving to allow to defrost.

– Then serve in a standard or gluten-free waffle cone.

– Dairy-free/gluten-free dessert.– Option – For a creamy version you

can substitute the cranberry juice for yoghurt measuring the same amount – 1/4 C of plain natural yoghurt. As the sorbet has an icy texture to it – great for those hot summer days ahead.

– Makes two large sorbet cones or four small cones.

FACTORS THAT INCREASE THE ODDS OF GETTING BREAST CANCER

– Age: Two out of three invasive breast cancers are found in women 55 or older.

– Family history of breast cancer: Your risk doubles when you’ve had one first degree relative diag-nosed.

– Genetics: 5 to 10 per cent of breast cancers thought to be caused by abnormal genes passed from parent to child.

– Personal history of breast cancer: If diagnosed you are three to four times more likely to develop a new cancer in the other breast or different part of the same breast.

– Radiation to chest or face before age of 30.– Race/Ethnicity: White women are slightly more

likely to develop breast cancer.– Weight: Overweight and obese women have a high-

MUSIC REVIEWSMUSICALLY MINDED with Daisy Hudson

Honeymoonby Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey, aka queen of the tragic, hypnotic pop ballad, is back and more hypnotic than ever with her fourth album Honeymoon.

The same dreamy, lovelorn tunes that saw her first three offerings top the charts are once again highlighted on her latest release. However the hip hop undertones of soph-omore album Born to Die have been replaced by soaring anthems, moody beats, and Old Hollywood mystique.

Much of the album sounds like Del Rey has written the film score to her own epic romance, and the newfound sophistication and production quality has paid off.

Lead single High By The Beach is a trippy, electro-infused treat that perfectly shows off Del Rey’s newfound swagger.

Music To Watch Boys To is another highlight, showing off the singer’s breathy vocals over Bond-like beats.

Another promising sign on the album is the increased focus on lyrics.

Del Rey’s songwriting has come along in leaps and bounds from her preppier first offerings, and it really shows on Honeymoon.

The singer is at times both vulnerable and strong, desper-ately in love and fiercely independent.

It’s a juxtaposition that sums up Del Rey perfectly.

1989by Ryan Adams

I’m not usually one for cover albums. A lot of the time they’re tacky and, frankly, a little embarrassing.

As such, the concept of indie-rocker Ryan Adams covering the 80s inspired pop gem that is Taylor Swift’s 1989 seemed slightly strange. When the album was first announced, critics and Swifties alike were skeptical. However that skepticism has turned to critical acclaim- and with good reason.

Adams takes Swift’s synth-pop anthems and turns them into moody rock classics reminiscent of The Smiths. Stripped back and reimag-ined, the album also highlights Swift’s strengths as a songwriter. Strangely enough, some of my least favourite tracks on the original 1989 album are some of the standouts on Adams’ version. All You Had To Do Was Stay is a soft, alternative gem, while Wildest Dreams is a fun, country-inspired track perfect for a summer road trip.

Ballad This Love isn’t a massive step away from the original, but Adams’ slowed down and stripped back version is hauntingly pretty. However, the hands-down best song on Swift’s 1989, Style, comes across as a little garish when transformed into a heavy rock anthem.

Some of the songs were written as over-the-top pop, and they don’t always translate well across another genre- Shake It Off is a good ex-ample. Nevertheless, Adams has done an admirable job paying hom-age to one of the world’s biggest pop stars. If you’re a fan of Taylor Swift, you’ll love it. If you’ve never listened to 1989, Adams’ version is good enough to stand alone.

Get ready for the races

Cup week is just around the corner, and although horses are in the spotlight, fashion occupies everyone’s minds before they get ready. Here is some advice to ensure your day is perfect.

Top tips for womenBe comfortable, no-one looks good in “someone else’s” clothes or shoes so make sure you spend the money and have an ensemble that fits you well. It can be a long day, so feeling good in what you’re wearing is very important. You don’t want to be one of those women at the end of the day with heels in your hands, dress bunched around your waist.

Leave the night club dress at home. Think classic and feminine when putting togeth-er your race outfit – it’s not a wedding, but neither is it a club-hopping soirée. Style is always preferential to showy clothes – remember this is an occasion where less is more and you will be on the right track.

Wear headwear! Hats and fascinators are very fashionable and take any outfit from pretty to stunning! There is such a great array of hats these days and they need not be a hugely expensive outlay so make sure you spend an afternoon browsing the shops – it’s all part of the fun preparation that leads to building excitement for the day.

Be sure to know your weather forecast and dress accordingly – always having a plan B in mind should it be hotter or cooler. Although you may have the perfect tan, it will be of no use if you are freez-ing should the weather be chilly. Opt for

stockings and a shawl instead.

Lastly, smile. A smile can be the most beautiful accompaniment to any outfit and the cheapest too!

Best advice for menShine your shoes before you arrive. Girls do pay attention to this and it goes with-out saying that sneakers are an absolute fashion faux pas in any language.

Tie your tie or bowtie correctly. This is not something you should try and teach yourself at the last minute. Google how to do it and practice, practice, practice. If that fails call in plan B – a family member or your Mum!

Make sure your suit fits. It’s so easy to rec-ognise when your suit isn’t fitted. Spend the extra money to make that happen, secure in the knowledge that you will look a million bucks!

Sunglasses are great for outside, but com-pletely unnecessary inside. Take them off or you look like someone trying too hard. You’re not Bono – therefore leave them off when inside.

Smell good (please!) We are all attracted to good smells ... don’t find yourself in the other category or you will be Nigel no-mates!

Etiquette at the racesStylish dressingAdhere to the correct dress code for the area of the race-course.

A day at the races is a special occasion and you should dress smartly. Men should wear a suit, or jacket, in both cases with a tie.

Ladies should choose a smart dress or suit (steer clear of miniskirts, halter necks and spaghetti straps). It’s fine for ladies to wear trouser suits (or a matching top and trousers). Remember a day at the races can be quite tiring with a lot of standing around – toe-pinching

stilettos might not be the best choice.

Hats off!An ideal choice for gentlemen racegoers is the panama hat – particularly stylish with a linen suit. Wear it low over the brow, with a slight tilt, and if you’re intent on showing your good manners, hold it by the crown raise it a few inches from your head when greeting a lady.

Some race meetings are an occasion where ladies can wear all kinds of extravagant hats and fascinators. It is noto-riously difficult to socially kiss

while wearing a wide-brimmed hat. There is a knack to tilting the head at a suitable angle, but two ladies who are both wearing wide-brimmed hats should avoid such a greeting.

If you’ve chosen an extrava-gant creation, spare a thought for your fellow racegoers – an elaborate hat might block their view of the action.

A safe betHave a flutter but moderate any excessive reactions. If you’ve staked your money on a loser, don’t sulk or give way to petulance or moodiness. Ac-cept your loss with equanimity and move on.

Don’t gloat. If you’re a lucky winner, you can enjoy a quiet sense of satisfaction - but don’t get too over-excited. Other people (especially if they haven’t been lucky) will find your antics wearisome.

Track-side etiquetteOf course, you will find the race exciting (especially if you’ve backed a real contend-

er) but keep loud shouting or excited screaming to the minimum - especially if you’re very close to other people. Be careful to avoid blocking others’ views of the track.

Don’t push your way to the front of the line at the book-ies. After the race, there’ll be a large number of people gathering around to collect their winnings - wait patiently in line. If the queue looks too big, you can always come back later

Bar behaviourPicnics are often taken at the car before the first race. Offer to contribute. Mind your table manners, even when eating al-fresco. Pace yourself. It’s a long afternoon, so break up your forays to the racetrack, the winning post or the winner’s enclosure with a chance to sit down, relax and enjoy the refreshments on offer.

Don’t over-indulge. Several hours of drinking on a sum-mer’s afternoon can be highly intoxicating and you don’t want to make an exhibition of yourself.

GP passionate on all things Tolkienby Susan Sandys

Ashburton GP Penny Holdaway’s post-graduate studies in J. R. R. Tolkien literature have given her a flexibility of thinking which has helped in her work as a doctor.

The self-confessed “study-aholic” was last month officially accepted to under-take a PhD in the field, where she will look at Tolkien’s development of faerie lore through an analysis of the author’s poetry.

It will mean the return of a gruelling study routine, after she last year com-pleted a two-and-a-half year Masters in English language and literature with a primary focus on Tolkien.

Discovering there was such a course in the first place has been a dream come true for Penny. She had been indulging her passion for learning the Elven lan-guages and had already been a Tolkien scholar for some years when she found about the Masters course, offered at the online Signum University in America.

Penny has been a fan of the English classic high-fantasy writer since she was a child and read The Hobbit at the age of seven and Lord of the Rings when 11. Her study routine involves about an hour in the morning, after an excerise workout and before heading off to her day job at about 7.30am. She then does a couple more hours of study in the evening, and studies almost all of her weekends and holidays.

In a way, completing her PhD, to be undertaken extramurally at Cardiff Met-ropolitan University in England, will make

her an informal “doctor doctor”. The first “doctor” relates to her role as a GP and the second to gaining the new doctorate.

Penny’s passion for study has also seen her gain a range of medical diplomas and certificates.

“I’m an introvert, so I need alone time. I love reading, I love books.”

Her home is the perfect sanctuary to indulge in such a pursuit, filled with related books and many Tolkien-inspired figurines.

Through her Tolkien studies she has met fellow students with the same interest

from around the world and travelled to San Francisco to present a paper.

She continues to enjoy her day job and has no plans to change her career path. As a matter of fact, her new study had helped her incorporate a new way of thinking into her work as a GP.

“I can write better, I can argue a point on just about anything.

“It’s given me the ability to think later-ally around a problem and come up with solutions for patients, which may be out of left field but still works, it’s given me a flexibility of thinking.”

Bathing in the nude? Shocking!Perez Hilton, American blogger, columnist and TV personality is not my cup of cocoa.

To me he’s just an online shock-jock of limited interest. But at the weekend he posted a photo online of himself and his two-year-old son Mario having fun in the shower (from the shoulders up only wear-ing nothing but two huge, gorgeous grins).

While many comments about the photo were positive and supportive, the red-necks were coming up with things like “kinda creepy”, “All I’m saying is pops nev-er took a shower with me. Raising little man to be a cupcake” (Well, Pops raised you to be an ignorant bigot).

“Kids need a mom and dad period!!!” (I think a mom and dad period would be stressful).

“He’s another Michael Jackson. Hope-fully his kid won’t turn out gay. Sad sad sad ...” (Idiot, I’m not sure taking a shower or seeing a naked body makes people gay)

“IS THIS A JOKE THEY’RE BOTH NAKED” (What? Naked??? In the shower?? Idiots)

Please excuse the sarcasim (in brackets after quotes if you missed them), but seri-ously, those comments make me despair for humanity.

We can’t sit on Santa’s knee now ... God forbid, the fat guy could be a peodophile while you, the parents, are standing there watching and taking photos.

Have we seriously, as a society, decided it’s okay to make something so gorgeous, natural and innocent, like taking a shower

with your toddler, something dirty and perverted?

Who’s dirty and perverted? The people who think this way, that’s who.

And it seems it’s more about Perez being gay than anything else. Hmmm, being gay does not make you a foul kiddy fiddler. Just like being heterosexual does not make you one.

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion in our democratic society, but that kind of vile, ignorant, redneck attitude sure does take the cake y’all.

The sad thing is, Perez even felt he had to wear underwear in the shower with his child.

My young children used to play in the bath with their father all the time. He was just a big kid with them, all I got was screams of laughter and a very big watery mess to clean up afterwards. Does that mean he’s a paedophile? I think there would be one hetero male walking around minus a few body parts if he was.

Get real people, nudity has nothing to do with creepiness. Creeps are creepy.

How do we teach our young children to accept and love their bodies if we’re hidden and queer about it ourselves?

Only people that care and are accepting of themselves have the confidence and nous to mentally and physically fight off would-be harmful creeps.

And how many of the moral masses that commented negatively on Perez’s photo-graph actually have children? And know the joy young kids have in running around and swimming in the nuddy?

Seriously, get some clues! It’s so hard for our men to have a “normal” uninhibit-ed relationship with their babies now. I know too many men who feel they have to second-guess their every move with their children. Now that’s sad.

The Age of AdalineAn epic romance fantasy, I have been waiting to see this mov-ie all year. The Age of Adaline stars the stunning Blake Lively, of Gossip Girl fame, as well as Harrison Ford and Dutch actor Michiel Huisman.

Trying to explain the concept of the movie to my co-workers was difficult, it honestly sounded like some sci-fi alien film – something I am not into.

Cutting to the chase, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has re-mained 29 years old for almost nine decades and lives a lonely, autonomous life, never explaining to anyone how she came to be that way. After numerous lost loves and multiple identities, a man finally appears that Adaline (who is now known as Jenny), wants to share her story with. But it’s not that easy, ghosts from her past appear and difficulty ensues. However, a series of incidents change her life forever and you can imagine how the rest goes.

While it’s a bit predictable and lovey-dovey and the story sounds somewhat crazy, first class performances from Lively and Ford make the film a winner in my eyes.

Did your grandmother age gracefully? She might have thought growing older with poise meant accepting age-related changes in her skin and overall health, or that costly cosmetic surgery was the only

way to look her best as she grew older. Today, better health

knowledge and leading-edge products have revolution-ised the concept of what it means to age grace-fully.

Growing older is inev-itable, but looking and feeling old don’t have

to be. Here are some actions women of any age can take to ensure they stay healthy and

looking good throughout their lives.

GET AND STAY ACTIVE

Health author-ities

recommend healthy adults get at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) ev-ery week, and engage in muscle-strength-ening activities at least twice a week. The benefits of exercise are many, including helping with weight control, lowering the risk of heart disease, improving car-dio-vascular health and even supporting brain health. It’s never too late to become active, so talk to your doctor about an exercise routine that works for you.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKINIt’s the body’s largest organ and the one that protects all the others. Skin also di-rectly affects how we look and feel about our appearance. Fortunately, the latest skincare technology makes it possible to care for your skin while visibly reducing the signs of ageing.

PROTECT AGAINST SUN DAMAGESun exposure is the leading cause of premature ageing of the skin and can even lead to skin cancer. Always wear

sunscreen to protect all exposed skin — even hands and feet. Choose a broad

spectrum product with an SPF30 or more. Many sunscreens can do double duty by moisturis-ing and offering a sheer hint

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BONESOsteoporosis — the gradual loss of bone mass over time — is a concern for women as they age. Bone health is essential for overall health, and directly affects a woman’s ability to maintain mobility and posture later in life. You can support your bone health in many ways, including ensuring you get plenty of calcium and vitamin D — either in your diet through lean dairy products or through supplements — engaging in bone-building exercises, choosing foods that are good for bone health, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption to 10 or fewer a week.

It’s never too late to become active, so talk to your doctor about an exercise routine that works for you.

Exciting Europe see what’s new

UK and Europe is an exciting destination - at House of Travel we have all the 2016 deals arriving daily in-store so thought we would share some of our experiences from our trips over the last couple of years.

I have cruised from Amsterdam to Nuremburg on a River Boat, really getting to know and experience the small villages along the Rhine and Main Rivers. I just loved this experience and also spent time in Amsterdam – a city built on a maze of extensive waterways. No visit to Amster-dam is complete without a visit to Anne Frank’s House. I look forward to returning to complete the rest of the cruise through to Budapest.

Nathan Bartlett has visited both London and Paris so has lots of great insights to share with clients and a highlight for him was the London Eye and, of course, in Paris the Eiffel Tower. Travelling between London and Paris was easy on the Eurostar an experience not be missed.

Turkey has a huge array of places to explore and Anna Schmack joined an Insight Vacations trip in November last

year visiting the Old City, the Blue Mosque and St Sophia as well as a cruise along the Bosphorus and Cappadocia.

Anna loved this experience and looks forward to one day returning to Turkey to explore further.

Thinking you like the sound of France and Spain? Bronwyn Wooding has spent time in these areas including a Walking Tour in the Loire Valley with all its fantastic chateaus.

Spain conjures up vivid colour, stirring music, passionate people with a fusion of ancient and new in one‘s mind.

Maxine Chisnall knows London, inside out. Brought up in London Maxine’s knowledge of London is second to none and she always thinks of the best things to do and experience.

With family still living in London, she is a regular visitor so her knowledge is always up to date and informative.

In April this year Aimee Mangin headed

off to Europe visiting Zurich, joined a river boat from Zurich to Amsterdam, had time to experience Amsterdam, jumped on the Eurostar to London and explored this fantastic city for a couple of days. Aimee’s must for London sightseeing is The Orig-inal London Sightseeing Tour, a 24-hour pass that stops at all of London’s major attractions.

Mandy Reid has experienced a Contiki of Europe as well as London and loves shar-ing her knowledge on the many available options for touring in Europe.

If you would like a stopover on your way to London, we have all visited many des-tinations along the way including Dubai, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Singapore and many more so can help you make decisions on what best suits you. These are just some of the places we have visited and we are always happy to share our experiences.

If you would like further details on any of our trips call into our office on East Street.

FOR FOODIES with Marg Brownlie

Rrrrrriba ... get your Spanish onI am seriously considering a trip to Spain next year, albeit a trip with a punishing trek, with a very old friend of mine.

This friend has decided the best way to celebrate her 60th birthday is to walk the famous Camino De Santiago.

It’s the route to spiritual enlightenment they say. But, for me, it is also the route to discover a very ancient cuisine.

So I thought I would do some research into this seemingly simple, but tasty, cuisine.

Chorizo, potato and cheese omeletteThis is such a simple and quick lunch treat.

1 small potato, cut into 2cm cubes

1t olive oil 50g chorizo, chopped 2-3 free-range eggs 1T chopped, fresh parsley 25g grated cheddar cheese

– Cook the potato gently in sim-mering water for 8-10 minutes or until tender. Drain and allow to steam-dry.

– Heat the oil in an omelette pan, add chorizo and cook for two minutes. Add the potato and cook for a further five minutes until the potato starts to crisp.

– Spoon pan contents out, wipe pan and cook a two or three-egg omelette in the same pan. When almost cooked, scatter with the chorizo and potato, parsley and cheese. Fold the omelette in the pan and cook for one minute more to melt the cheese.

GazpachoA well known delectable, vegetarian starter that never fails to please, commonly known as Gazpacho.

Served cold as a soup it is well worth the effort, it’s so refreshing.

1 red onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped 1 slice white bread, crusts removed and torn 500ml passata (like a tomato puree, but easily available now at supermarkets) 300ml vegetable stock 5T olive oil, plus extra 4T wine vinegar 1t Tabasco sauce 1t sugar basil leaves, to serve

– Put the onion, garlic, pepper, tomatoes and bread in a food processor and blend until finely chopped, but not too smooth.

– Tip into a large bowl with the passata, stock, oil, vinegar, Tabasco, sugar and sea-soning. Mix well, cover the bowl with cling film or foil and put in the fridge for at least two hours, or overnight.

– To serve, pour into small bowls or glasses, drizzle a little olive oil over it and sprin-kle with a few torn basil leaves.

Seafood paellaOne thing is for sure, I won’t be leaving Spain until I have tried seafood paella. The following recipe seems like a lot of ingredi-ents, but it’s a real treat to share with the family in the weekends with lots of crusty bread. You can add any seafood you like.

500g prepared medium-sized squid, cut into 3cm pieces

5T olive oil 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 150g shallots, finely chopped 1 1/2 red peppers, seeded and

chopped into 1cm pieces 1 1/2 green peppers, seeded and

chopped into 1cm pieces 1 1/2 t smoked paprika 350g large, raw, peeled prawns

500g small clams 600g short-grain paella rice 1 heaped t loosely packed saffron

strands 1.5l fish stock 250g large mussels, cleaned Salt Aioli, to serve (optional)

– Dry the squid well on paper towels, season with salt and set to one side.

– Place a 40 to 50cm paella pan over two burners on a medium heat. Add the oil and garlic and, as soon as the garlic begins to sizzle, add the shallot and fry for five to six minutes until soft and sweet, turning the pan every few min-utes so that everything cooks evenly. You will need to do this throughout the cooking time. Add the red and green

Olive bread scrollsThese scrolls are a great complement to any shared lunch, Spanish style.

500g strong white flour, plus extra for rolling 1t salt 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast 6T extra-virgin olive oil, plus a little for

brushing Small bunch of basil 170g pitted black olives (about 200g unpit-

ted weight) 1 garlic clove, crushed 4 tinned anchovies (optional) 50g pitted green olives Sprinkling of parmesan cheese

– In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, yeast, 1T olive oil and 300ml warm water, to make a soft dough. Knead by hand for 10 mins or with the dough hook in a food processor or mixer for five mins. Put the dough back in the cleaned-out mixing bowl, then cover the bowl with oiled cling film. Leave to rise for an hour in a warm place until doubled in

size.– Meanwhile, make the filling. Discard any

tough basil stalks (leave tender ones on) and put in a mini food processor or hand blender beaker with the black olives. Add 4T olive oil, the garlic and the anchovies, if using. Whizz to a rough paste.

– Heat oven to 220°C (200°C fan bake). Line a shallow baking tin about 30x20cm with non-stick paper.

– On a floured worktop, roll out the dough to a rectangle roughly 30x40cm.

– Spread the olive paste all over and arrange the whole green olives with the sprinkling of Parmesan in a line down one of the short edges. Roll up the dough like a Swiss roll, starting at the short olive-encrusted end to make a sausage shape.

– Cut the dough into 12 slices, then carefully lift each one into the tin, to make four rows of three swirl shapes. Lightly brush all over with the remaining olive oil. Loosely cover with cling film, then leave to rise for 20 mins or so, until slightly puffed up and filling the tin. Cook for 20-25 mins until golden, then leave to cool in the tin.

peppers and smoked paprika and fry for five minutes until the peppers are just softened. Stir in the squid and stir-fry for three to four minutes until it

becomes white and opaque.– Scatter the prawns and clams around

the pan, add the rice and saffron, and stir everything together well. Add the

stock and 2 1/2 teaspoons of salt and bring to the boil, stirring briefly to dis-tribute the ingredients around the pan.

– Leave to simmer vigorously for six min-utes over a medium-high heat, but do not stir it any more, remembering to give the pan a turn every two minutes.

– Then reduce the heat to medium, arrange the mussels evenly around the pan and push them down slightly into the rice. Leave to cook for a further 14 minutes, again without stirring, by which time all the liquid will have been absorbed and the surface of the rice should be pitted with small holes.

– Turn off the heat, cover the pan with a clean tea towel and leave to rest for five minutes before serving. Serve warm straight from the pan with fresh crusty bread and aioli.

Left – Spanish paella and Marg Brownlie’s not leaving Spain until she gets to try one.

Choosing tilesCeramic or porcelain tiles are becoming a very popular option in flooring these days. They have many benefits which include being suitable in high sunlight or high traffic areas as well as for wet areas (for example bathrooms, laundries or kitchens).

They also come in many dif-ferent sizes from a small mosaic to a 600mm x 600mm tile, thus giving unlimited patterns and designs.

The difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles mainly comes down to a couple of things.

To begin with, porcelain tiles use a slightly different manufacturing process which makes them denser and less porous than ceramic. Secondly they have the colour baked all the way through, whereas the colour on ceramic tiles is just in the glaze on the top (think carrot versus radish). This also makes chips or damage on porcelain tiles less obvious than with ceramic.

There are a couple of things to remember when choosing tiles.

Firstly, floor tiles can go on the wall, but wall tiles cannot go on the floor.

This is because floor tiles are made to be more durable and able to withstand having heavy furniture put on them, strong enough for heavy traffic and able to sustain impact from

falling objects without damage. Wall tiles do not have to endure these things and are therefore made slightly thinner.

Another point to remember when selecting your tile is tiles are made to be solid and hard-wearing and therefore can be quite hard to stand on for long periods.

As opposed to say carpet, cork or wood flooring, there isn’t a lot of give in tiles! Therefore although they are great for high traffic areas, like an entranceway or wet area, eg bathroom, they may not be as practical for a kitchen you spend a lot of time in.

Tiles are also good for out-door areas, however again you need to make sure you get the right tile. Because porcelain tiles are made a lot denser and are therefore more resistant to damage, this also means por-celain tiles are more practical for outdoor use where frost may be an issue, which may cause cracking in ceramic tiles. Furthermore, when choosing tiles for an outdoor area (or a shower area), it is best to go with something that is non- slip.

These have a slightly rough surface that provides some grip, as tiles can become very slippery when they get wet.

The accent nailSti ll very on trend, the accent nail is simply painti ng one or two nails slightly diff erent to the rest of them. Oft en your ring fi nger is used as the accent nail, but that is up to you. The opti ons for accent nails are endless, but some easy ideas are using a cott on bud to do spots on one nail, using a thin strip of tape to create a line or stripe patt ern, or simply painti ng it a diff erent complementary colour and use a top coat to seal.

The ombre nailThe ombre hair trend has been around for a few years, but is now branching into everything from clothing and interior design, to nails. The ombre eff ect is the art of blending together a gradient from light to dark. This eff ecti ve, but very simple nail art technique, is perfect for changing up your nail game. Simply paint the design directly on to a small sponge and dab it on to your nail, clean up around the edge of your nail and use a top coat to seal.

The glitter nailAn easy way to add a litt le sparkle

to your day or night is to paint the ti p or edge of your nails in a glitt er top

coat. This doesn’t have to be perfect or precise, simply paint on a base colour, and wait for it to dry, then paint the

secti on at the top or base of your nail with the glitt er.

Are your eyes giving you grief? If your eyes feel as dry as the desert or you experience a stinging sensation that makes you feel as if you’ve spent the past eight hours lost in a sandstorm, you might have a condition called dry eye.

Many suffer from the symptoms without even realising the condition can be treated.

Eyes depend on a flow of tears for con-sistent lubrication and protection. These tears are created from a combination of water, oil and mucus, which are secreted by special glands.

An imbalance in this tear system can lead to inadequate lubrication, causing irritation or blurred vision. People with dry eye may also produce excess tears, which are caused when the eye sends a distress signal through the nervous system for more lubrication. Since these tears are mostly water they lack the lubricating qualities of normal tears.

If left untreated, dry eye can damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision.

Inflammation is a hallmark of dry eye. Reducing the inflammation on the surface of the eye and regulating the glands that produce tears is essential to manage the condition.

Most people assume these symptoms are a result of age.

Dry eye is a part of the natural ageing process and most people over 65 experi-ence some symptoms.

Many people assume that artificial tears or re-wetting drops will offer some imme-

diate relief. But using over-the-counter treatments can delay professional diagnosis and effective therapy.

The results are often temporary as eye health is a systemic process and this inflam-mation needs to be addressed within the body.

A number of options are available today for dry eye sufferers.

Since diet affects eye health, some op-tometrists are directing patients to nutri-tional supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, to manage symptoms.

Daily supplements of flaxseed oil or fish oil, when used alone or with lubricating eye drops appear to reduce dry eye symptoms,

which include burning, stinging, redness and intermittent visual disturbances, says AllAboutVision.com.

Omega-3 fatty acids are important for maintaining the structural components of tissue cell membranes throughout the body and may help reduce inflammation that can contribute to dry eye. Supple-ments containing fish oil derived from wild fish, as a source of omega-3, are thought to possess more nutritional benefits.

Other nutrients found to help dry eye conditions include vitamin A as retinyl pal-mitate, and vitamin E as d-alpha tocopher-ol. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble (absorbed by the body with the help of fats) antioxidant

Fat-soluble vitamin E is also thought to protect the cells of the eyes from damage caused by unstable molecules that break down healthy tissue. These compounds are found in a healthy diet and are important in stabilising omega-3 fatty acid formulas. Green tea extract has been shown to contain antioxidants for systemic and ocular tissues.

Since long-term use of fish oil may cause a vitamin E deficiency in some people, fish oil supplements containing vitamin E are ideal.

Eye vitamins that contain nutrients including omega-3, vitamin A, and vitamin E, to attack the cause of dry eye by improving the quality of the tears produced and provide rapid relief by soothing inflammation.

The first step is talking to an optome-trist or ophthalmologist, who will recom-mend the best course of action.

PAPER PLUS BOOK REVIEW with Norma Geddes

The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz

USE YOUR VIP CARD IN STORE AT PAPER PLUS AND GET

25% OFFTHIS INTRIGUING BOOK.

42 | YOU Magazine

This is arguably the second most anticipat-ed novel of the year after Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman and I’m pretty sure fans of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy won’t be disappointed.

For the book to even get to this point is a story in itself. Larsson died before he could enjoy the success of his much-ac-claimed novels.

After his death there was much wrangling over his estate between his estranged father and brother and his long-time partner. The estate commissioned David Lagercrantz to write a fourth book to add to the trilogy. If you haven’t read any of the Millennium books I suggest you start there and if you’re still deciding whether to attempt this one, go for it.

You’ll be pleased to know Lisbeth Salander is still angry, reclusive, vengeful, to name a few of her alarming traits, and Mikhael Blomkvist is still a crusading journalist but unfortunately crusades are thin on the ground and the magazine owners are impatient for a good story.

The action begins when Professor Frans Balder contacts Mikhael–he knows he’s in danger and he has a powerful story to tell.

He’s a brilliant scientist whose field is artificial intelligence. He uncovers some serious wrong-doings which involve the Swedish secret police, Silicon Valley spies, the Russian mob and the NSA. This is

just the kind of political intrigue Mikhael thrives on and it doesn’t take long for his old friend Salander to become involved. Lisbeth shows her softer side when dealing with Balder’s severely autistic son who is a maths genius.

The story is highly topical because of Edward Snowden’s revelations about international surveillance.

It’s such an exciting story - the characters are so memorable and I think the author has treated them (and Stieg Larsson) with great respect. Should there even have been a fourth novel? I leave that for you to decide, but I certainly enjoyed this well-written and well-plotted book.

The possum returns, but kitten never leavesA large and raucous male possum has taken up residence in my backyard.

Perhaps it’s the same one who hung about for a while last spring.

Not only does he annoy me with the racket he makes at night – he riles up my jack russell to the point of frenzy.

In her younger days Daisy was capable of climbing trees to get to possums and, despite not being much bigger than the furry pests, killing them.

Not so nowadays – while her athletic abilities have diminished over the years, she yaps as loudly and persistently as ever.

But she has been perfecting a new hunting strategy.

Earlier this year I arrived home to find two tiny kittens abandoned in a cardboard box on the doorstep of the cattery.

With the help of my daughter, one was rehomed and a home found for the other. The woman who was to have taken Jagger was not able to do so for a few weeks, in the interim Daisy took over as surrogate mother.

When it came time for the kitten to go, they were a tightly bonded unit, sleeping together and playing for hours.

When her little mate Whoopi was alive the dogs were always fossicking around looking for rodents or hunting rabbits, but without him she lost the drive.

It was great to see her with a new lease on life – needless to say the kitten stayed and is now part of the family.

And it seems having her own “pet” has rekindled the hunter within.

Recently the pair found a rabbit burrow in the paddock and developed a unique plan.

Daisy dug the burrow out and Jagger caught its contents – bunnies galore!

Both pets chowed down on baby rab-bits.

The birds were also appreciative of the soft fur left on the lawn to line their nests – it seems everyone but the rabbits are winners in this story.

I don’t hold much hope of Jagger’s hunting prowess extending to the pos-sum, though. Time to borrow that cage trap again!

MY BACKYARD with Michelle Nelson

It’s time to borrow a trap again, as my old nemisis Possum has either returned or a new one has taken up residence in my garden.

Daune O’Connor is this month’s winner with the following ques-tion:

My hydrangeas never flowered well and the leaves were stunted as well this year! What is the problem?

There are a number of reasons why your hydrangeas might not be performing well. Firstly, the plant may be very old and has come to the end of its life. Even through hydrangeas can live for quite a number of years, if they get very old the leaves tend to get small-er and the flowering less prolific.

It’s possible your soil is of very poor quality – hydrangeas tend to grow in most soils, but they certainly perform better in soils enriched with compost and are regularly fertilised throughout the growing season. Fertilisng will help produce bigger leaves and allow the plant to flower throughout summer months.

Has the hydrangeas situation in the garden changed? By that we mean the area may have become shady eg: large trees cover-ing the hydrangea where previously it was growing in full light.

They will still grow in semi-shady positions, however, the flow-ering will be less prolific and the plant will have a slightly stunted appearance.

It might be a good idea to purchase new hydrangea plants as there are always exciting new varieties appearing on the market each year. Choose a nice sunny well drained position and add lots of compost prior to planting and you should have great success.

Spring is a dynamic season and a great ti me to introduce eco living systems to our homes and gardens. Here are some spring Eco living ti ps to try out at your place:

Spring clean the natural way• No more excuses, start your compost!

We promise it’s easier than you think. For households, composti ng is a way to recycle certain materials and kitchen scraps and turn them into a benefi cial soil conditi oner for your veggie garden and reduce the amount of rubbish bags you need to buy. What can go into the compost: Food scraps, grass clippings, plant prun-ings, leaves, newspaper, fl att ened cardboard, egg shells, or coff ee grounds and tea bags? (Whew! That’s a lot.)In short, it’s a no-brainer that com-posti ng will drasti cally reduce your waste.

• Simply layer the materials into your bin.

• Always cover on top of your heap and under the lid as the micro or-ganisms and benefi cial bacteria that help break down your compost are light sensiti ve, leaving the compost uncovered exposes it to having the nuisance of fl ies living in it. You can

use an old woollen jersey, a piece of carpet or a hessian sack as a compost cover under your lid.

If you have any problems call the Recycling helpline 0800 627 824 or email sherylsti [email protected] . You can also att end a monthly FREE compost demo at the Eco Educati on Centre and see diff erent types of compost systems.

Lawncycling • Consider getti ng a mulching mower

and lawnmulching your lawnclippings or using them as mulch around shrubs or vegetable seedlings.

Love food hate waste• Make a shopping list weekly and plan

what you buy and your meals. This can save wasti ng food that’s in the fridge or cupboard.

• Keep track of how much waste you generate by eati ng out and making trips to the store, I guarantee you’ll be amazed. All those bags, disposable coff ee cups and containers really add up. Ask your take away shop for a re-ducti on in price if you bring your own reusable coff ee cup or food contain-er? You’ll save resources and money.

• Use reusable shopping bags whenever you go to the store, keep them handy in your car. Reuse any you have at home.

Set up waterwise systems• Set up a rainwater barrel and a wa-

tering system so you can water your garden all through the hot summer months eff ecti vely and effi ciently.

Spring eco livingWhat really happens to my rubbish? We all know about recycling but what about rubbish? It gets taken away but to where?

Materials enter the waste stream when they are put out in a Council rubbish bag or dropped off in trailers, trucks or skip bins at the Ashburton or Rakaia Resource Recovery Parks.

Your rubbish is compacted, loaded into trucks and trailers to be transported to Kate Valley Landfi ll 10km North West of Amberley. The Kate Valley Landfi ll is owned by Transwaste, a joint venture company owned 50% by Canterbury Councils including Ashburton District Council.

Kate Valley is a class A Landfi ll lined with clay and a recycled plasti c liner to prevent any leachate from leaking into the groundwater. liquid is collected and treated and plans are afoot to grow pine trees onsite with the leachate.

When the landfi ll is generati ng peak volumes of methane, over 8 mega watt s of electricity will be generated which is enough to power 8,000-10,000 households in North Canterbury.

Burning mixed waste or burying rubbish in farm pits creates long-term polluti on and is banned by ECAN. Disposing of non recycla-ble or mixed rubbish to Landfi ll is the best opti on environmentally.

Recycle more – waste less – fi nd a system that works for you to improve your recy-cling and reduce your rubbish at home, at school or at work.

If you live outside the collecti on area please do not place your Council rubbish bags outside your local school for collecti on as this puts a lot of pressure on the collecti on system. Take them to the Ashburton or Rakaia Resource Recovery Parks where you can drop them off for free.

Plans are underway to fi nd a convenient soluti on for rural people. If you have any queries check out the Council website www.ashburtondistrictcouncil.co.nz or call the recycling Helpline; 0800 627 824.

Gas is collected as the rubbish conti n-ues to rot under the ground through a network of pipes laid into the landfi ll cells to suck the gas out. Kate Valley is now generati ng 2 megawatt s of electricity as the landfi ll acts more and more like a bio digester.

Rethink, reduce recycle, respect

Burning mixed waste or burying rubbish in farm pits pollutes our environment and is banned by ECAN. Drop off non recyclable or mixed waste at the Ashburton or Rakaia Resource Recovery parks for disposal at Kate Valley landfi ll. For more informati on on what can be recycled or disposed of www.ashburtondistrictcouncil.co.nz or call 0800 627 824.
