People have always bartered and swapped things – starting within their own community and then branching out over increasing-
ly long distances. Goods in exchange for goods later evolved into goods in exchange for money. Trade was bringing different
cultures together. And before long it was not just exotic goods that were crossing the oceans, but also languages, world views
and ideas. The supply and transportation of goods over long distances created demands in terms of their shelf life and sparked
off technological developments and social changes. One aim has always been central, and that is to protect the merchandise
from outside influences. Indeed, a package has to arrive safely to be a bundle of joy. This is still the case to this day.
There has, however, been a radical change in the variety of the goods. The era of industrialisation was shaped by revolutionary
inventions. Modern-day masterminds are primarily working on perfecting and fine-tuning products – faster and faster, smaller and
smaller, lighter and lighter – product development is heading for the land of superlatives. All this may please the consumer,
but there is a downside as well. Indeed, as the performance of products is enhanced, so too is their susceptibility.
We at NMC have been in the business of generating and sustaining the feel-good factor for half a century, employing high-
ly developed technologies and sophisticated products. Our key area of expertise lies in the manufacture of industrial foams. This
also includes making profiles which provide effective protection for goods in transit. Not only do we emphasise the functionality
but we also appreciate the aesthetics. NOMAPACK® – because as clothes make the man, so packaging makes good brands!

NOMAPACK®
Covering all the bases
Countless products travel the world and conquer the globe. Some are cheap mass-produced articles and others are beautifully
crafted handiwork, but all are born out of deft workmanship, a willingness to take risks and innovative strength. That’s
why these products deserve to be safe and secure in their packaging and arrive at their destination in a dignified manner.
When it comes to packaging, the requirements depend entirely on the nature of the contents being packaged. Whether for the
automotive industry, the construction sector, the domestic market, or for high-end consumer goods, the main point of packaging
is usually to protect the goods from scratches, breakage and damage caused by impact. Innovative, lightweight packag-
ing materials are creating space in all means of transport – by road, sea and air. This in turn saves energy, time and money.
What’s more, it is patently obvious that an aesthetic wrapper and good visual merchandising can effectively sway the decision
to buy a product.
NOMAPACK® profiles provide packaging, embellishment and protection for everything – with no exception. Our standard
products are already sufficient to cover the majority of current packaging requirements. But if your product is really unusual and
exceptional, we will factor in the specific shape and properties of the material and customise the packaging for an exact
fit. Our specialists will explore the specific problems – together with your experts – and come up with a packaging solution
perfectly tailored to your requirements. And we have the resources and innovative finishing processes – quite apart from our
experience and enthusiasm – to meet particular challenges and to create the seemingly impossible from foam. Putting it plainly,
NOMAPACK® will see your quality product safely through to the end customer.

Automotive industryNOMAPACK® – the airbag for car parts
Status symbol, a resplendent vision in chrome, number one means of transport – the motor car. Cared for, looked after, and
polished to a mirror finish. Our love affair with the car is not infrequently one of intense passion. Often a major expense
and the subject of extensive research. No wonder that every little scratch in the paintwork really hurts.
Just like people, new cars have their tender spots. Bumpers and doors, for example, are particularly vulnerable when being
transported. Similarly, components like shock absorbers, bonnets, wheel rims and windscreens have to arrive at the spare parts
dealership in perfect condition and just in time. Some of the parts have sharp edges and require well-designed and robust
packaging. NOMAPACK® protects valuable items, thus avoiding high warranty claims which can arise through damage
in transit and subsequent touching-up of paintwork. Moreover, our solutions can easily be integrated in existing conveyor-belt
assembly lines, effecting maximum protection and guaranteed product quality from production right through to delivery. Not
only does NOMAPACK® protect delicate paint finishes but it also leaves no traces when removed. Our materials can also
be recycled easily after use in the interests of minimising environmental impact. Entirely in keeping with a forward-looking and
sustainable automotive industry.

Cars are designed to
move – but if they start
rolling while they are still
being delivered then good protec-
tion is needed to avoid any adverse
consequences. Moreover, profiles
supplied by NOMAPACK® leave no
traces when removed, preventing any
warranty claims for damage in transit.
A bumper needs to be
able to take the knocks.
But, until it is safely in
the garage as part of a new vehicle,
it actually needs effective protec-
tion. Bumper profiles developed by
NOMAPACK® provide this in style.
Long before windscreens
contribute to the pleasure
of driving and convey
a feeling of security, they themselves
need full and effective transport protec-
tion. NOMAPACK® is a natural in this
regard. We just adapt the profile sym-
metry to fit the various windscreens.
Transport Bumpers Windscreens
Whether it’s a brand-
new bonnet, a car door
or an exhaust system,
NOMAPACK® provides reliable protec-
tion for the various shapes and finishes
on body panels and car parts. The
special coextruded profiles with a par-
ticularly hard-wearing interior surface
are designed to prevent the profile from
puncturing at the critical points.
NOMAPACK® provides
effective protection for
shock absorbers, shock
absorber mountings and other spare
parts, guaranteeing top quality.
And because the practical standard
profile developed by NOMAPACK®
is extremely flexible, it can easily be
stretched to fit any shock absorber.
The sight of gleaming
chrome wheel rims is a
heart-stopping moment
for car lovers. And the pallet dividers
made by NOMAPACK® ensure that
the shiny surface is still perfect
on delivery.

ConstructionNOMAPACK® – the bodyguard on the building site
Dust, noise, dirt: building sites are high-pressure environments where time is of the essence. The hectic pace means that delicate
items are not always treated lightly, with expensive materials or machines left lying around on the ground or sent on a rough
ride to be transported to another floor.
NOMAPACK® is also the right solution on the building site, where the innovative and versatile foam profiles provide reliable
protection for windows, doors, garage doors, radiators or even solar panels, keeping valuable items in one piece and a real
source of pleasure.

Doors/gates WindowsHeating/ bathroom
Every door separates
private spaces from
public spaces and offers
protection from the elements. With its
cleverly designed edge guards and
surface protectors NOMAPACK® sets
new standards. Its capability is down
to extra-thick profiles with integrated
multiple shock protection, and impact
and vibration shielding.
Windows bring aspect
and protection in all
weathers. And before
they are fitted NOMAPACK® provides
reliable protection for window panes
and window frames thanks to effective
surface protection and raised
side profiles.
A well-controlled heating
system and a comfort-
able bathroom are just
the tonic after a long day at work.
NOMAPACK® ensures that radia-
tors, washbasins and bathtubs arrive
safe and sound in their intended
home. Practical and pliable, the slit
NOMAPACK® Stretch profile extends
to give a snug fit on all radiators.
Glass/ solar panels Building sites Civil engineering
Solar panels and
panes of glass are
technical masterpieces
and they are easily damaged. But
NOMAPACK® is on hand to save
them their inevitable fate. Special
coextruded profiles comprising two
layers of different thicknesses provide
consistent protection.
Heavy duty awaits con-
crete members, enclos-
ures and display panels.
And as they make their way to their
various positions NOMAPACK® plays
the bodyguard.
Building sites are busy
places. But delicate items
which are sitting around
and waiting to be fitted are fully pro-
tected with NOMAPACK®. Scaffolding
and stages can also be covered
with our profiles in order to prevent
accidents.

Consumers/ConvertingNOMAPACK® – safe and durable
“It is not the things themselves which worry us all our lives but what we imagine the things to be,” wrote philosopher Michel de
Montaigne. It can often take a new acquisition in the house to bring home the brilliance of this quotation to us. The image of a
brand is very much defined by its visual appearance – including the packaging. And consumers are quick to conclude what is
inside a package from the look of what is around it. An aesthetic wrapping adds value. And it is key to selling the product.
Consumers are aware of the appearance of a product, and those who choose packaging solutions for life science prod-
ucts are just as aware. That’s why they take care to ensure that medicines and vaccines are in safe and sterile packaging when
they reach the patient. Delicate substances need packaging which protects what is inside and prevents exposure to the outside
world. In consumer products, by contrast, the top priorities are efficient packing systems on the conveyor belt, space-saving
logistics solutions and appealing visual merchandising. Whether used for cameras, mobile phones or PCs, NOMAPACK®
takes good care of our beloved electronic gadgets. We will work with you to turn your ideas into foam.

NOMAPACK®
NOMAPACK® – watch the ideas take shape
Air, synthetic polymers and know-how are the ingredients needed to end up with a seemingly simple product – foam. On
the way, however, it passes through many stages, complex production processes and innovative techniques. Our aim is to turn
your ideas into foam and to meet your requirements – worldwide.
And this is how we do it: amongst other things, we use various bonding techniques directly on our profiles. We are also adept
at complex processes like coextrusion. We also make foams with reinforced interiors to protect large fragile surfaces. Our
manufacturing processes in general, and specifically those used in the production of NOMAPACK®, are extremely versatile
and flexible. We offer a wide range of foams for all the NMC product lines. We use additives to change certain properties,
such as tear strength and surface hardness. And we add a touch of colour, with 15 standard colours for non-crosslinked foams
and more than 10 for crosslinked foams. Last but not least, we make our products in a wide range of sizes, densities and
shapes. Even our basic range of 6 product lines comprising 13 different NOMAPACK® profile variants (see table starting on
page 26) offers almost unlimited application options. A worldwide network of warehouses and extensive storage facilities with
15 distribution centres and subsidiaries across Europe also put us in a class of our own when it comes to high-speed delivery.
Naturally we are always prepared to customise products to specific requirements. Contact us and we will work together on
high-profile products.

A dozen good reasonsto have NOMAPACK® in your warehouse
We have mastered the development and production technologies for making industrial foams in a wide and diverse range
of densities, colours and shapes. 60 ultra-modern production lines and manufacturing plants in Europe meet the worldwide
demand for pioneering foamed plastic solutions. With almost 40 years’ experience in foam extrusion, we guarantee the
perpetual technological advance of our sector of industry.
Process-controlled systems enable us to respond to global market developments with flexibility and to cater to worldwide market
requirements at short notice. A number of working methods and techniques (extrusion, moulded foam, hot-melt, milling and cutting
processes) cover a wide range of production capabilities, thus allowing a fully customer-oriented foam production service.
As the saying goes, “there’s a solution to everything,” and it is with this motto in mind that we are constantly rising to new chal-
lenges in plastics technology. Our highly qualified industrial engineers are working to safeguard the technological future. And, at the same time, to expedite it. We produce and process a large number of raw materials and develop solutions which
are optimised to meet today’s application requirements and technological demands on modern-day product design.
32 – 33
Our technologies
Coextrusion is a means whereby a
product can be made in one process
step with two machines running in paral-
lel, hence the possibility of combining
two foams with different properties.
Foams and other materials, such as foils
and films, can also be coextruded with
coloured coatings. The possibilities are
virtually limitless.
Foamed materials are just as diverse as
packaging contents. Packaging profiles
may need to be especially light, extra
hard, ultra-soft or particularly pliable, but
NMC has the necessary know-how when
it comes to open-cell and closed-cell
foams. The relative density, for example,
might range from 18 to 600 kg/m3. Given
this array, we most definitely have the
technology to turn your ideas into reality.
Lamination is the means we use for bond-
ing foam with a wide and diverse range
of materials to design custom-fit solutions
for specific products. We also use extru-
sion techniques to increase the load fac-
tor and provide lasting protection. What’s
more, we have mastered the process of
joining several foam layers together to
a required thickness or connecting foam
profiles widthwise.
Density Laminating Coextrusion
Additives and copolymers affect lev-
els of compressive deformation, tear
strength, per cent elongation at failure,
UV-resistance, fire behaviour, surface
hardness, visual appearance and other
technological characteristics of a product.
Our range also features more than 15
standard colours for non-crosslinked and
crosslinked foams. Other colours can be
supplied on request.
The application of adhesives to profiles
is just one of the finishing processes
which we use to enhance products to
meet customer requirements. We apply
protective foams to coated surfaces
which leave no residues after use. We
also use permanent adhesive on request.
Numerous patents attest to the quality
of our products.
If required, we can produce custom-
ised profiles with special serrations,
such as NOMAPACK® U Stretch and
NOMAPACK® Multishape. A clever
cutting technique makes the material
very flexible and workable – ideal for
your production or transportation needs.
Indeed, objects of various sizes can be
packaged with just one single profile.

Technology & know-howFor custom-fit profiles
Over 40 highly qualified experts work in our research centre in Belgium on the solutions of tomorrow. We invest 3 per cent
of our annual turnover in the development of new products. Our specialists work on 250 development projects every year,
thereby creating the basis for future innovations. We work with you to jointly engineer made-to-measure solutions. We also cultivate relations with universities and testing institutes with a view to productive collaboration. Indeed, we are on
a quest for revolutionary, environmentally friendly products and pioneering concepts.
With some 40 years’ experience in foam extrusion and numerous international patents, we guarantee the perpetual
technological advance of our sector of industry. More than 60 state-of-the-art production and manufacturing lines meet the
demand for creative foamed plastic products. And thanks to process-controlled systems we can respond quickly to changing
levels of demand. We produce and process a large number of raw materials and develop foams which satisfy modern-day
requirements in terms of technology and design. Our worldwide IT network means that we can achieve the fastest delivery
times and literally borderless customer service. As such, we are full of confidence as we face the market requirements of
the future.
Sustainability is assuming a central role in the debate about social progress. Sustainable development is based on the
unison of economy, ecology and society. In concrete terms, as far as we are concerned, this means innovation to secure
the long-term economic success of NMC, conservation of resources, and good stewardship of the environment. This is
internalised sustainability – for a decent and humane society. For tomorrow’s world.
42 – 43
NMCWhat matters to us
Every now and then we all ask ourselves what the future might bring. Our future is undoubtedly in foam. Making industrial
foams entails know-how and innovation. Our rich supply of experience is teamed with valuable observations from practical ap-
plications and theoretical insights from our research centre. And so the visions of today evolve into the top products of tomorrow.
Quality will continue to be at the top of our agenda in future. Products are increasingly being made by machines. Yet their
monitoring and the development of processes and materials lie entirely in the hands of our 1000-strong workforce. Perhaps
it is the foam itself which makes our staff so dedicated? Whether they are working in customer service, research, production,
order processing or delivery, the fascination for our soft, warm, flexible and yet resistant basic material is universally mani-
fest. And to further reinforce this positive attitude we have adopted a quality management system certified as conforming to
ISO 9001:2000.
The basic ethos of NMC is acting with personal responsibility – including towards the environment. We pay more than
mere lip service to effective nature conservation and prefer to let our actions do the talking. The “Responsible Care” initiative
of the chemical industry is our inspiration and basis for action. The new EU regulation on chemicals, introduced in 2007 and
dealing with the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals, or REACH for short, is also an important guide for us.
What is more, we voluntarily stopped using CFCs and HCFCs back in 1988. We also recycle almost 100 per cent of the
polyethylene rejects from production, to name but one example in this regard. These will continue to be our guiding principles
in future. Indeed, a quality mindset and visionary action inevitably lead to greater quality of life. Today, tomorrow, and the
day after.
