    Re-Forming & Representing a

    Civic Complex

    01

Design of a Civic Center Located Near Downtown Houston

    Core Design Studio 3 / 2013 Fall

    Formal Strategy

    In recent decades, pub-

    lic buildings represent-

    ing local or regional au-

    thorities have come to

    either resemble dull func-

    tional ofce sheds or rep-

    licate the formal glories of

    past public architecture

    by borrowing its formal el-

    ement. The belief in con-

    temporary architecture as

a tool not only to organize

    civic institutions, but also

    represent and spatially

    ground them in their con-

    text, seems to have been

    lost since the perceived

    failures of the large-scale

    public projects in the Unit-

ed States. At a time when

    corporate buildings domi-

    nate the publics attention

    and civic services are in-

    creasingly found online,

    this project makes a point

    for the persistence and

    renewal of contemporary

    architecture in the public

    realm. Start with a formal

    strategy dealing with the

    idea of multiple that cor-

    respond to program ar-

    rangement this project is

    exploring the possibilities

of a new type of adminis-

    trative building.

    02

Design of a 24hr Club to complement and enhance the weekly routine of city dwellers

    Core Design Studio 2 / 2013 Spring

    The city of Houston

    is propelled by au-

    tomobile. Given the no-

    zoning law condition, pro-

    grammatic boxes scatter

    on at land. People drive

    to their destination, con-

    sume whatever program

    they desire, then hop

    back on the vehicles and

    leave. Exterior urban envi-

    ronment is bypassed and

    ignored. This project is

    aiming at challenging this

    urban behavior by utiliz-

    ing architectural moves

    that create a continuous

    lanscape (I prefer calling

    it threshold) which cores-

    ponds to specic pro-

    grams. The landscape

    slows circulation and fuse

    border line between inte-

    rior and exterior so that

    while heading to their de-

    sired programs, people

    are almost being demand-

    ed to wander through and

    pay more attention to the

    exterior environment. The

    project ensures the joyful-

    ness of this wandering ex-

    perience. Though the pro-

ject is at building scale, it

has the abilty to be pro-

    jected to urban scale and

    creates a better exterior

    urban environment. In this

    project, we were asked to

    analyze formal elements in

    a case study, then trans-

    formed extracted ones on

    to our own project.

    Re-Direction of CirculationThis project explores

    the moment when

    discrete meets continu-

    ous, divergent meets uni-

    form and enclosure meets

    openness. The character

    of boulder can be de-

    scribed as discrete, and

    lack of directionality, on

    the contrary, stripe can be

    described as open and

    continuous. Circulation in

    a program and within pro-

    grams has to be re-direct-

    ed when boulders are in-

serted in a set of stripes.

    The boulders become the

    turning points of the archi-

    tecture.

    9- square is designed

    as a modulating land-

    scape that functions as a

    bench while at the same

    time physically reect-

    ing information pertinent

    to the Rice student body.

    As the availability of study

    rooms change on an

    hourly basis, 9-Square re-

    ceives this information fro-

    m the publicly available

    online database showing

    the reservation periods of

the 36 study rooms in Fon-

    dren library. This informa-

    tion is abstracted into nine

    blocs of four study rooms

    each and physically rep-

    resented by nine 2x2

    squares made of 1/2-

    thick acrylic panels array-

    ed in 3x3 gr-id. Through

    a real-time data feed of

    room availability, the nine

    panels, reect this infor-

    mation by varying their

    heights based on the ve

    possible occupancy con-

ditions for the blocs of four

    rooms that each panel

    represents. Information

    dictates height, and facili-

    tates an ever-changing

    landscape of seating pos-

    sibilities. Furthermore,

    each panel is edge-lit with

    4 LED strip to illustrative-

    lydenote a higher level of

    reading, namely which

    particular study room in

    a particular bloc is occu-

    pied or available.
