You Can Have A Career You Love!

What others have said about working with us…

"Hiring Hallie is the best investment I have made towards my new line of work. It is worth more than the new computer, the fancy business cards and the new home office supplies. I have moved leaps and bounds further towards my goals with her help. Hallie is insightful and continually sees one step beyond."

Susan Morse, Wilmot, NH

"Hallie helped me get to where I am now. She's been an amazing influence, sounding board, coach, and confidant. She's had a profound effect on my life. I can't tell you how fabulous of a coach she is!"

Tara Scarlett, Atlanta, GA

"Your coaching has been a "lifesaver" for me on so many occasions. Through your masterful coaching skills you've demonstrated that you are so much more than a career coach. You are an awesome human being, creating a safe space for others to live with purpose as they re-connect with the light inside of them."

Karin Smith, Baltimore, MD

"I needed help in discovering what was important to me, aligning my life to support my priorities, and realizing that it was do-able. Sometimes those kinds of changes seem so huge that you think there is no way to accomplish them. But there is… just a step at a time. [The coaching experience] caused me to rethink my life and what I really wanted. Once I understood that, I was able to take the steps to create the life I wanted."

Wendy McGee, AL

“My cover letter looks amazing! You were extremely helpful, always available for assistance and ready to jump right in. You asked the right questions and wrote an awesome resume and cover letter for me.”

Ellen Currier, Eugene, OR

“I was able to secure an interim job, which allowed me to change my living situation for the better. I learned how to better prepare my cover letter and resume. I also learned to expand the diversity of how I go about looking for a job. I really enjoyed working with Darcy, and appreciate everything she has done for me.”

Chris Horwath, Atlanta, GA

“You provided professional guidance that I couldn't get from anyone else in my life. Without that, I don't think I could have done much more than survive the ups and downs at work until I finally quit - and found another job that would most likely have fallen into the same negative pattern.”

Elizabeth, Baltimore, MD

“I got my $550 worth from the very first session in our first month of coaching.”

Toby Mercer, Atlanta, GA

"Darcy walked me through some tough and confusing situations. She has helped me understand my talents and weaknesses in a focused way. I would recommend her for career counseling to anybody…"

Ed Cordrey, Woodstock, GA "My daughter is much happier and more confident... As her mother I am very grateful to you for enabling this transition, and to know you are there if she needs support in the future. Thank you."

Sharon, CT

"Hallie has helped me become more focused and assertive in my career aspirations. Never underestimate your need for a great career coach!"

Pam Skinner, Jackson Heights, NY

Introduction

“The greatest risk in life is

not taking one.”

When I was considering a career transition

to identify my ideal career, the quote above

kept me motivated and moving towards my

goal. I would ask myself, “At the end of my

life do I want to say I tried and failed, or

that I hadn’t tried at all?” You know the

answer . . . I wanted to say that I tried. I

wanted to say I stepped out of my comfort

zone to take a stand for what I wanted in

my life—a career I felt impassioned about,

truly enjoyed, and one that would provide

me with more than enough income to meet

my financial goals.

What do you want to say at the end of your

life?

As an experienced career coach, I am

passionate about helping you find your

dream job. I know first hand that it is

possible to enjoy your work – and be

1 Dream first, dream big

Dream First: While you are dreaming big

and brainstorming career ideas, hold

practicality at bay.

There is always time to get practical later on

in the process. If you get practical too soon

you can cut yourself off at the knees with

brainstorming ideas. If you allow yourself to

dream and dream big, you may come across

a career idea you never considered or even

knew about.

Dream Big: To identify your ideal career,

you need to dream big. You have to think

outside of the box, think beyond the jobs

you’ve had before, and think creatively to

effectively brainstorm possible career ideas.

What do you love to do? How can these

things relate to a career? Dream big and

think big. Don’t play small here. If you play

small, you may not identify career ideas that

could be perfect for you.

2 Define Success Your Way

The traditional definition of success goes

something like this: a job that allows you to

use your natural talents, with financial

stability, good salary, and great benefits.

There’s nothing wrong with this definition of

success if you are happy in your job and

these things are your top priorities. But if

you are truly unhappy with your career,

these things are not good enough.

Don’t stay in a job you dislike because

friends and family think that it’s great or

because you don’t want to admit you made

a mistake in your career choice. You must

define success your way, and identify your

personal priorities, in order to find a job that

is a fit for you.

3 Look at the Big Picture

Many people choose a career based on past

experience, their natural talents and salary

and benefits – or some similar combination

of these factors. I hear this time and time

again, “I just fell into it” or “The job was

offered so I took it.” We tend to think, “Well

I’m good at this and it pays well so I’ll try it

and see what happens.” I’ve done this

myself! And I’v learned that not only do you

need to be pro-active in your career choice,

but there are also many things to consider

when deciding on the best job for you.

I’m not saying that salary and benefits are

not important, they are-very much so. But

you need to consider much more than those

things in order to identify your ideal career.

In the Ideal Career Model I use with my

individual and group clients, there are 8

things to be aware of in choosing the right

career path. You need to look at all of these

things! Don’t just consider a few factors

when you’re making your next career

choice; look at the big picture.

Learn From These Client Success Stories

Jenn Williams

Jenn Williams worked with us as an individual coaching client. When we started coaching, she’d

worked in theatre for several years. And although theater is one of her passions, she was

unhappy with her career path. It wasn't exactly the right fit. Jenn wanted to make a change,

and she didn't want to settle for less than a job she truly enjoyed. She wanted to find her

dream job. Jenn hired us to help her identify her ideal career and make it a reality. Now she has

found her dream career as a holistic medical professional is well on her way to making it

happen. Here's her story.

How did you uncover your dream job?

For a few years I felt as if I was just floating through life. I was working in theatre, a career I

had worked hard for and thought I loved. But as much as I do love theatre, it felt like

something was missing. That's why I started working with Hallie, I wanted to find out what was

missing. Through the exercises we did together, I discovered what my true values are, what

really matters to me in a job and in life, and what would leave me feeling fulfilled and satisfied

at the end of the day. Through research, a lot of soul searching and with Hallie's help and

insight, I found a career that I'm very excited about. I am pursuing my degree in Holistic Health

and Life Coaching.

What steps have you taken to make it a reality?

Once I knew what I wanted to do, I had to find out what tools and education I needed in order

to pursue the career. I started researching schools and found one I fell in love with. I kept

talking myself out of it because I was living in Virginia and the school was in Arizona. I wasn't

sure I wanted to make that big of a move. But then I got laid off from a job that I hated at the

beginning of June. I realized this was the answer I had been asking for. I had no reason to hold

myself back from what I wanted to pursue anymore. I called the school that day and enrolled.

Page 14 ©2002-2009 Hallie Crawford and Authentically Speaking. All rights reserved. www.halliecrawford.com

What challenges have you encountered along the way?

I think the biggest challenge I've encountered along the way is myself. I tend to over-analyze

situations until I talk myself out of something I'm unsure of. I assumed that the people in my

life would react badly to this new adventure because it was such a switch from what I had done

for the past ten years. When in reality, they couldn't have been more excited for me and

supportive. It's the little gremlins in your head that can trip you up at every turn and keep you

from doing what you want to do. You just have to learn to listen to them, and then tell them to

shut up.

What has helped you the most in this process?

The tools that Hallie gave me through our coaching have been invaluable. I'm much better at

recognizing the gremlins when they pop up and stepping back to see what the issue really is. I

still have my days when I freak out, but I'm much better at evaluating if there's a real issue I

should address or if I'm just trying to trip myself up because I'm scared.

Have there been any naysayers? How have you managed to stay the course?

I've been very lucky that everyone in my life has been super supportive, more so then I thought

they would be. I think that's a big part of what has helped me stay the course so well. I think

the only naysayers I've run into have been my parents but only from a financial concerns

standpoint. They're so excited about what I'm pursuing and they're so happy that I'm excited

about a career again.

What lessons have you learned? What surprises have you discovered?

I've learned you have to have faith that things will work out. If it feels right and you know

you're on the right path, some times you have to let go of the worries and trust it will work

itself out. I've learned you get what you ask for. If you open your heart and ask for something,

you'll get it. It might not be in the way or form you were expecting, but you’ll get it. I've

learned you can't plan everything because it's going to change in ways you can't even

anticipate. I've learned that people will surprise you in wonderful ways and that those who love

you truly just want you to be happy.

Top 3 Tools to Identify Your Ideal Career

Page 15 ©2002-2009 Hallie Crawford and Authentically Speaking. All rights reserved. www.halliecrawford.com

How has this experience changed you?

For the first time in a long time I feel very at peace. It comes from feeling like I'm heading in

the right direction and that I've found what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm more confident and

stronger than I have been for a long time. I know myself better then I did when I started

working with Hallie. I had been hiding some truths from myself because there were feelings I

was scared to deal with. Now I realize that facing these gremlins and dealing with them allows

me to move past them and truly be happy.

Any "words of wisdom" to share with others?

Listen to that little voice in you. We all have it and a lot of us choose to ignore it because we

think we know what we're "supposed" to be doing. But supposed to according to who? Do what

you love, do what inspires you, do what makes you happy. When you are doing what you're

good at and what makes you happy, you bring more in to the world and to others then you can

imagine. And really...that's what we're all supposed to be doing.

Tara Scarlett

Tara worked with us for several years as a coaching client. She has found her path and is on her

way towards fulfilling her dream of being a professional photographer with her own business.

She developed a financial plan to take care of her bills, asked for support from her friends and

family, and left her position at a marketing firm to pursue her passion. Here’s her story.

How did you uncover your dream career?

I uncovered my dream career through a lot of self-exploration, in order to realize and accept my

interests and natural talents. I’ve wanted to be a photographer since I was a kid, but I think I

was afraid to go for it. I needed to give myself permission to take the leap.

What steps have you taken to make this happen?

What has helped me most is having a coach—a supportive person who is objective and probing,

someone who helps me listen to myself, set a plan and remain focused. Reading has also

Page 17: You Can Have A Career You Love! · 2009-12-10 · rethink my life and what I really wanted. Once I understood that, ... Top 3 Tools to Identify Your Ideal Career Page 7 ... Remember

helped me. There are a lot of great stories out there about people who have made changes to

follow their passions. After uncovering my dream, I took inspiration from these stories and from

my coach. I focused on getting the courage to move forward with my dream, and then I just

went for it! I am single with a mortgage and bills to consider. I have no other source of income

and no relationship support. I have me. I provide my own financial and emotional support, and

I am following my dream!

What challenges have you encountered along the way, and how have you handled

them?

My greatest challenge has been deciding what direction I want to take and knowing that I have

to do it on my own. I have focused on myself and what will make me, not others, happy.

Have there been any naysayers? How have you managed to stay the course?

Yes, there have been naysayers – myself included! My internal “gremlins” were the worst of all.

I’ve been reading and working with my coach on how to manage those disempowering beliefs. I

have had to focus a lot on controlling my pessimistic inner critic. Outside naysayers, including

family and friends, say things without understanding where I am coming from or make

comments with their own agendas in mind. I learned to stop discussing my passions with others

until I was able to defend my decision. This decision is not about anyone else - - it is about me,

my happiness, my choices and my future.

Any “words of wisdom” to share with others?

You never know what you can accomplish unless you try. For me, I won’t look back one day

and regret not trying. There is a quote from an unknown author that I like: “Years from now

you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So

throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Meet Hallie Crawford

Finding the right job can be exciting, and sometimes

exasperating as well. I know, because "I've been there, done

that".

I was lost after college. I jumped around from one job to

another in a variety of fields, trying to find something that

satisfied me. I know my parents were worried. Other people

kept asking me what I wanted to do, but I couldn't answer

them. I didn't know!

As I moved from job to job, I felt like all I was doing was

identifying what I didn't want to do instead of what I did want. It was all very frustrating.

Somewhere along the way, it dawned on me that I probably wasn't the only one trying to find a

fulfilling career. Others were undoubtedly experiencing the same thing. That's when it hit me!

This is what I wanted to do! I wanted to help others avoid the struggle I was going through. I

wanted to be a Career Coach. I became a certified coach through the Coaches Training Institute

and I love it. I've found my passion.

In 2002, I established my coaching practice and since then, my business has grown by leaps

and bounds. This validated what I knew all along - that others were seeking to find that ideal

job, that perfect career, that rewarding profession.

I live in Atlanta, Georgia with my husband Frank and son Vaughn. When I'm not helping clients

in their career search, I'm horseback riding or traveling.

We are here to help! I invite you to visit our online store for tools to help you identify your

ideal career, navigate your transition, and nurture your career.
