The expansion is part of a $700,000 grant award from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Goodwin is committed to expanding access to preventive and routine dental care for the underserved populations of Strafford County. “When we increase our capacity we avoid dental conditions requiring more costly emergency dental treatment,” says Goodwin Dental Center Director Whitney Goode, DMD. “More preventive access to oral care helps us to drive down health care system costs and reduce health disparities in the communities we serve.” The new operatory is under construction and will open this fall. Recruitment is underway for new dental staff. The funding will also allow for transportation assistance and expanded hours. Kelley McLaughlin, DMDDr. Kelley McLaughlin is originally from Northern Vermont. She fell in love with the NH Seacoast while attending the University of New Hampshire where she received her B.S. in Biology in 2009. She later earned her D.M.D. from Boston University at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine in 2014. She worked in a private practice for two years before joining Goodwin Community Health. She is a member of the American Dental Association and New Hampshire Dental Society.

Monica Lord, FNPMonica was hired as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2016. She earned her Nurse Practitioner degree from Sacred Heart

several years of experience working as a Registered Nurse on a busy, medical unit in a Connecticut hospital where she cared for many types of patients including those with arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, pneumonia and COPD. She also has some experience working with pediatric patients in the public school system.

Monica strives to develop a positive, lasting relationship with her patients and values their individual insights when developing care plans.

“This program has been a savior for me” Interview with Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) patientShe had nowhere left to go and nothing left to lose. No home, family, friends or money. She was a single mom addicted to oxycodone when she came to Goodwin and hoped to join the Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) program. To protect this patient’s privacy, she will be referred to as Claire.

experienced traumatic events as a young girl including sexual assault, feelings of abandonment and PTSD. She lost her father to heroin and her brother suffers from substance misuse disorder.

Despite her dark past, at one point, Claire had all she ever wanted. “I had a beautiful family and friends. I had a beautiful home. I had what most people dream of having.” Claire’s drug dependency began by taking prescription pain killers in response to pain and injuries. When the small amount she started taking wasn’t enough to curb the pain, she began to take more until eventually she felt she needed it to survive.

Her battle with addiction lasted three years until she hit rock bottom. She became homeless and had to sleep in the back of her car, even in freezing cold weather. Family members cared for her two kids which she describes as a horrible feeling. “One of the hardest struggles was to give my children away because of my bad choices. That’s when I hit rock bottom. I had lost everything I ever worked for. I burned every bridge I had. Everyone who once believed in

me was gone. That’s when I realized I didn’t have anything else to lose. My kids inspired me to be a better person.” While Claire’s children motivated her to seek treatment, she knew this was something she needed to do for herself.

Claire researched local recovery options

right path and staying strong enough for the fear of the unknown. It’s easy to continue doing something that you’re trapped in or comfortable doing because it’s something you know. It’s easier to deal with the predictable. The hardest time for an addict is coming out their addiction and into a whole unknown world.” It was then that she heard about the MAT program at Goodwin Community Health.

Select providers at Goodwin are licensed to prescribe buprenorphine (Suboxone) and Vivitrol to adult patients. These medications decrease cravings and withdrawal symptoms which helps patients focus on other aspects of their treatment plan to recovery. While these medications won’t cure opioid addiction, they can assist in the development of healthy and effective skills to be free and rid of opioids entirely.

“It was the people that work [at Goodwin] that helped me get to where I am today. The process to get into recovery can be overwhelming. I remember going through the recovery paperwork thinking, ‘What am I doing? What am I signing up for?’ I was afraid of failing again. The [Goodwin staff] believed in me. They gave me insight that I didn’t see in myself. This program has been a savior for me. I am so grateful for it. There is nothing quite like this program because of the community here. If you need something it is all in one building; everyone is connected.”

Goodwin is able to offer this program to those with stories similar to Claire’s because of generous support from donors. Funding was available to help Claire pay

could not afford it. Support from donors

on the path to successful recovery.

“Without this program, I honestly wouldn’t have been able to do this myself. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for this program and being able to get the funding I needed. I could have died, could have been another statistic, could have left my children without a mother. I am so grateful for this program.”

Claire continues receiving treatment through the MAT program at Goodwin. She enjoys spending time with her children outdoors, playing frisbee or going to museums. “I felt like, for a while, I was absent and I was clouded. Now I can enjoy being with my children in the moment.” Claire was even able to save enough money to celebrate her daughter’s second birthday. “I never would have been able to do that before. That was a huge accomplishment for me.”

“This program, these people, this community has set itself apart from other programs. The people I have met here have taken me in as family, and they make me feel that I am worth helping.”

Farewell Carol Garlough After 36 years, Carol Garlough retired as the WIC Director and COO at Goodwin. Carol’s well-deserved retirement was celebrated in July at the Governor’s Inn in Rochester. These days, Carol enjoys spending time with her husband and grandchildren.
