The summer has almost come to a conclusion, and we are gearing up for the fall and planning for the coming year. There are new opportunities for everyone to get involved. You might ask yourself what you are passionate about, and how might you bring that passion to the Church as a gift in service. From gardening to teach-ing, your passion might be put into some form of ministry. As I write this, we are planning on making a few changes with baptisms at our parish. In the past, when there were hundreds of babies being baptized each year, the general practice was to baptize large groups of children at ceremonies after Mass, usually on Sunday afternoons. But as the number of infant baptisms has declined, it becomes more sensible to return to baptizing during Mass. It is an extraordinary thing to see a baptism and to be able to welcome a new member into the Church. After our birthday, according to ancient tradition, our baptism day is the most important day of our lives, because it changes the arc of our lives to be ordered to Jesus Christ and eternal life. Of course, parents and godparents are the first teachers in the way of faith, but we are a community of believers. We too, by praying with and welcoming new members, communicate our faith. This month we will baptize babies at the 10:30 AM Mass at St. James two times: this weekend and on the 16th. For the most part, we will be doing this once a month at one of the Masses, but we hope it will happen regularly at our Masses. For me, one of the more profound moments at baptism Mass comes after the baptism rite and the Eucharistic prayer. At the Communion rite, we begin with the Our Father, or the Lord’s Prayer, that Jesus himself made our norm for prayer. At this moment, we pray our community prayer with our newest brother or sister. It is a sign that we are the body of the Christ – from the most vulnerable members in the arms of their parents, to the most venerable members who have been praying this prayer since childhood. I hope you will join me in welcoming Arlo this weekend and then Joey and Jamison on the September 16. Welcome to the three of you, to the Catholic community of the body of Christ, and congratulations to your parents and godparents. Another (temporary) change is that, after extended reflection, and with bold trepidation, I would like to announce that we will move the 4:00 PM Mass to St. James for the month of October only. The reasons for this are to allow plenty of parking for all those who attend Mass at that time, to help all those who fight the downtown tourist congestion to get to Mass more easily, and to use the IC parking lot for tourists as a fund-raiser. We hope that this experiment will help us with attendance and to relieve a little of the frustration many experience in getting to IC during October. We are not planning to change the location of the other weekend Masses. Peace, Father Murray Building news: Well, it has been a summer of construction and we are finally without a plumber, electrician, carpenter, or paver on the grounds, for a short while. We have been working on a lift for Immaculate for access to the basement and the bathrooms. It is a slow process as we determine what is the best course. It appears now that a one-person lift will be the way to go. We also will have the ramp at the back door at IC evened out so that there is not a lip to negotiate on the way in the door.

Page 3: You are welcome Here · SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 ― TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME You are welcome Here We are a new parish, established in August of 2017, comprised of St. James

FALL OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND GROW

HEALING MASS ― TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 If you are in need of spiritual or physical healing, please join us for a Bilingual Mass followed by Healing Prayer on Tuesday, September 11, at 7:00 PM at Immaculate Conception church. After Mass, all are invited to come forward for healing prayer or the sacrament of anointing of the sick. All are welcome.

CCD AT MQOA? Here at Mary, Queen of the Apostles Parish, we know that the best and most effective people to lead a child to Christ are his or her family members. That’s why we’ve designed faith formation that builds up the whole household – parents, guardians, grandparents, siblings, and other special adults. Sunday Mass is at the center of all our programs for family faith formation. Check out these opportunities to learn, grow in faith and become disciples.

FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION If your child is in grade 2 or above and has already been baptized, and you seek the sacrament of Eucharist for him/her, join us at an opening gathering for parents and candidates on Sunday, September 30 at 9:30 AM in the conference room at St. James church. Preparation for this sacrament includes preparation for the sacrament of Reconciliation (first Confession) in the fall, and continues with preparation for Eucharist in the spring. We use a combination of 5-6 gatherings of children and their parents/guardians and an at-home curriculum. First Communion is scheduled for May 19, 2019. Please let us know you’re coming by emailing Margo at [email protected]

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION If you or a high school student in your family is baptized, a sophomore or older, and seeks the sacrament of confirmation, please join us for our first gathering of candidates and parents on Sunday, September 23 at 5:00 PM in the chapel at Immaculate Conception church. Preparation for this sacrament consists of a combination of 5-6 gatherings of candidates and their parents/guardians/sponsors and an online curriculum. Confirmation Mass is scheduled for June 8, 2019. Please let us know you’re coming: email Margo at [email protected]

WONDROUS STORIES Wondrous Stories, our Children’s Liturgy of the Word, is offered as ongoing faith formation (in the place of CCD) for children up to 6th grade. Offered during our 10:30 AM family-friendly Mass at St. James church, kids gather in the parish hall (while their parents enjoy the readings and homilies at Mass), to learn about the Gospel and our Church. Kids love it, parents love it. Watch for more information and our start date here in the bulletin!

But wait… there’s more! Watch for more opportunities for adult learning, like Alpha (see p. 4)
