Gateway to beginoffering logistics trainingGateway now offers the Manufacturing Skills StandardsCouncil’s (MSSC) industry driven training and assessmentprogram which addresses the core competencies ofhigh-skilled, front-line material handling workers. Thetrailing is delivered through two seminars, CertifiedLogistics Associate and Certified Logistics Technicians.

The courses provide competencies for workers across thesupply chain, from entry-level to the first line of supervisionpositions.

The first level, Certified Logistics Associate, includes thefollowing topics: global supply chain logistics life cycle,material handling equipment, safety principles, qualitycontrol, teamwork, mathematical reasoning andadaptability to change. These courses are held Feb. 9, Feb.16, Feb. 23, March 1 and March 8. All courses held 8 a.m.to noon. Participants must attend all classes to qualify forthe certification. Participants must attend all classes toqualify to take the MSSC certification exam, which will beoffered during the last class.

The second level, Certified Logistics Technician, includesproduct receiving and storage, order processing, packagingand shipment, inventory control, safe handling ofhazardous material, evaluation of transportation modes,dispatching and tracking operations, demand and supply,EDI, reverse logistics and contract management principles.These courses are held March 22, March 29, April 5, April19 and April 26. All courses are held 8 a.m. to noon. Theprerequisite for this course is completion of the CertifiedLogistics Association program. Participants must attend allclasses to qualify to take the MSSC certification exam,which will be offered during the last class.

Elkhorn Campus remodelsStudent Services, libraryGateway opened the newly constructed Student Servicesand library on its Elkhorn Campus in an effort to betterserve its students and the community. The library alsohas been named the Alice J Morava Library in honor of theformer longtime Gateway Technical College Board ofTrustees and Walworth County community leader.

“As a resident of Walworth County, it’s important to me

that it be known that our Gateway Elkhorn campusprovides magnificent opportunities for learning,” saidMorava. “Being on the Gateway Board of Trustees was oneof the highlights of my life. Education is my foremost loveand I believe it can be the most important of life’spursuits.”

The addition to the North Building officially opened inNovember and is part one of a three-phase effort toimprove the campus.

The library was moved to its current location withinthe North Building. The former library space will berenovated to house a learning success center that willconsolidate many student support services under one roof,just down the hall from the new addition. Space freed up inthe South Building, where Student Services formerly washoused, will be remodeled to house an expanded studentcommons, classrooms, community meeting room andfaculty offices.

Work is also being done to the campus grounds, includingimproved lighting, parking lot resurfacing and an expandedwalking trail with exercise stations.

Morava establishes scholarshipfor Walworth County studentsGateway Technical College Foundation Inc. will soon beginoffering two $1,000 scholarships per academic yearthrough the newly established Alice J Morava Scholarship.

Morava donated $50,000 to the foundation to establish thescholarship, which will be given out annually to studentswho are Walworth County residents, are enrolled in at leasteight credit hours, have completed at least 12 credit hours,carry a grade point average of 2.5 or higher anddemonstrate financial need.

“This endowed scholarship will provide Gateway studentsliving in Walworth County the opportunity to pursue agratifying career,” said Morava.

Gateway Technical College Foundation, Inc. will offer theAlice J Morava Scholarship for the first time during in theFall 2012 application period.

Gateway offering adult high schoolcourses in Racine, ElkhornIf you are at least 18 years old and a few credits short ofearning your high school diploma, Gateway can help yousucceed.

Gateway offers its adult high school program during theday on the Elkhorn and Racine campuses — night coursesare also available at the Racine Campus. Students canattend at either location and don’t have to be enrolled in asecondary school district to attend courses.

Those interested can obtain a program application atStudent Services offices at all three campuses to begin theprocess.

Gateway student selectedas president of state groupGateway Technical College student Rebecca Gement waselected president of Wisconsin Student Government. WSGcalls itself “a strong statewide organization that opens thelines of communication between the 16 technical collegedistricts. WSG addresses political and other issues thataffect students, faculty, the system’s financial concerns,and its existence.”

Gement is enrolled in Gateway’s Information Technology-Computer Support Specialist program as well as theProgrammer/Analyst program. Gement graduated fromGateway’s Information Technology-Network Specialistprogram in May. She currently serves as the Vice Presidentof Gateway’s United Student Government on the KenoshaCampus

“I look forward to meeting with legislators to let them knowhow important the success of our technical college systemis to the state of Wisconsin’s economy,” said Gement.“Technical colleges touch on every aspect of the workingclass. They give young students the hands-on trainingnecessary to enter the workforce with real-world skills, theygive older, displaced worker students the opportunity togarner new skills in a timely fashion to return to theworkforce and offer the opportunity for current workers totake specialized classes needed for them to continue ontheir career path.”

Gateway community attendscentennial time capsule burialGateway Technical College staff, students and publicgathered for the commemoration ceremony to bury the2011 Centennial time capsule behind Centennial Rock onGateway’s Racine Campus. The burial of the capsule is oneof many ways Gateway has been celebrating its 100thanniversary as the first publicly-funded technical college inAmerica.

“We are proud to be the stewards of technical education inSoutheastern Wisconsin during this exciting year ofcommemoration,” said Stephanie Sklba, co-chairperson ofthe centennial celebration committee and Gateway vicepresident, Community and Government Relations. “Wehope the items we place in the time capsule will help thosewho open this in the future better understand how Gatewayserves our communities, our students, and our successes inits 100th year.”

Items in the capsule will illustrate how the college andcommunities celebrated the centennial and provide insightto future generations on how the college and studentsfunctioned in 2011. Wisconsin was the first state to passlegislation allowing for the creation of local continuationschools, which would later become technical colleges. TheRacine Continuation School – the name predecessor toGateway Technical College – was the first to be establishedin Wisconsin.

Students experience GatewayInternational Education WeekGateway Technical College held a foreign film festival and aseries of public events on all of its campuses the week ofNovember 14 as part of International Education Week. Thefilms featured in the series included “Departures,” “HowlsMoving Castle” and “Children of Heaven.” The public eventsincluded discussing Gateway student experiences, travelingabroad and the value of world travel on a collegiatecurriculum.

Gateway held the events to celebrate InternationalEducation Week and to show Gateway’s commitment toproviding international education to students as a means togain global marketplace knowledge and skills that makethem more marketable to employers upon graduation.

Gateway student chair-ity auctionfeatured literature themeGateway Technical College’s Interior Design studentorganization’s Ninth Annual Chair-ity Auction featuredchairs with a literature theme, and was held Nov. 18 at theSouthport Beach House in Kenosha.

The student-designed chairs, as well as accessories anditems donated by area businesses, were auctioned at theevent at a live auction. Each chair purchased included arelated book to the winning bidder.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Kenosha LiteracyCouncil and the Gateway Student Chapter of the AmericanSociety of Interior Designers. Admission was half price witha donation of a new book to the Kenosha Literacy Council.The event began with a silent auction.

Gateway begins newstudent publicationGateway has begun a new effort to communicate with itsstudents through the Connect publication, which can befound in stands on each Gateway campus and online.

Connect is Gateway's new student news publicationhighlighting student successes, important announcements,news, and events on campus. The student-focused paper ispublished monthly during the fall and spring semesters.

In addition to providing students with a valuable means ofconnecting with Gateway, the publication representsanother way for students to receive hands-on training,using Technical Communication students as reporters.

Gateway graduatenamed alumni of yearGuy Bradshaw, Gateway Technical College graduate andChairman/CEO of the Kenosha-based Bradshaw Medical,was recently honored with the Wisconsin Technical CollegeDistrict Boards Association 2011 Distinguished AlumniAward. At Gateway, Bradshaw earned a degree in IndustrialEngineering and was the 2011 graduation commencementspeaker for the college. He has also contributed financiallyto the college by establishing a scholarship for Gateway’sSurgical Technology program. Bradshaw earned hisbachelor’s degree from Concordia University.

“Guy is a positive influence in our community and a rolemodel for Gateway Technical College,” said GatewayTechnical College President Bryan Albrecht. “The Gatewaycommunity could not be more proud of Guy for pursuing hisdream in building Bradshaw Medical into one of ourcommunity’s fastest-growing companies.”

Gateway welcomes Germanstudents; to visit GermanyGateway welcomed six students from KaufmannischeSchulen Haunau in Haunau, Germany, for a three-weekexchange visit that provided them with several differentbusiness and apprenticeship experiences. In March,Kaufmannische Schulen Haunau will host six Gatewaystudents for a similar experience.

German exchange student Carina Raab pointed to severalgoals sought to achieve while she was here in the UnitedStates, including improving her English and learning aboutanother culture – its workplace as well as daily life.

“I think it’s good to know how other countries live andwork, especially in our global economy today,” said Raab.“I want to gain insight into how other businesses operate –that’s the great thing about the exchange, the jobshadowing component of it.”

This feature enhances the job search, puts your resume infront of the prospective employer – it doesn't get mucheasier than that,” says Gateway Tanya Burton, GatewayStudent Employment Services counselor.

Albrecht joins national boardto build future talent poolGateway Technical College President Bryan Albrecht hasjoined Corporate Voices for Working Families’ CommunityCollege Advisory Board to work with national-level businessleaders on what’s needed to successfully build strategicpartnerships between community colleges and industry.

The board reprsents a forum where higher education andnational business leaders can interact, learn and share bestpractices to provide working learners with the skills andeducation needed to succeed in the 21st Century.Corporate Voices created the Community College AdvisoryBoard as part of its Learn and Earn initiative, which seeksto identify, promote and encourage innovative partnershipsbetween employers and higher education institutions tohelp today’s working learners complete their postsecondaryeducation while working.

Corporate Voices for Working Families is the leadingnational business membership organization focused onpublic and corporate policy issues involving workingfamilies.

Albrecht hosts Boy ScoutsDistinguished Dinner eventGateway Technical College President Bryan Albrecht hostedthe Three Harbors Council of the Boy Scouts of Americaevent which recognized Nicholas T. Pinchuk, Chairman &CEO of Snap-on Incorporated, as its 2011 DistinguishedCitizen.

The award ceremony was hosted and sponsored bySnap-on at its new IdeaForge auditorium. GatewayTechnical College was also an event sponsor.

Established by the Boy Scouts of America, theDistinguished Citizen Award recognizes noteworthy andextraordinary leadership of Eagle Scouts who havedistinguished their selves in communities across the UnitedStates. Pinchuk became an Eagle Scout at age 13.
