JULY 2020
Inner Wheel Club of Wellington Women Together
Editor’s Note
I take over as editor of this newsletter with some trepidation! Val has
done such an amazing job and I recognise that she is a very hard act to
follow. On behalf of us all, thank you, Val, for your amazing work on the
newsletters.
This month I contacted the co-ordinators of the Inner Wheel group
activities as listed on the inside cover of the booklet and asked them for
an overview of their group. Their responses are in this newsletter.
Please let me know if you would like any items included in the newsletter.

Best wishes to all
Rosemary Mirams
President's Pen Our Inner Wheel year got off to a great start on the 30th June. It was our first get
together since February and the Covid-19 lockdown and everyone was full of
chatter and delighted to be “social” again. It was lovely to see Inner Wheel
friends again. We had several guests and an inspiring speaker from Heart Kids. We gave our speaker the long delayed cheque for $1000.
I am so looking forward to the second week of the school holidays when my daughter, partner and grandkids Nina and Theo come to stay – I haven't seen
them since Christmas and Covid lockdown. I hope you are all out and about
seeing family and friends again.
Bridget has been a wonderful president during a difficult time and she has
already been a huge help showing me the ropes. Thank you Bridget. We have a
great committee this year with four new members. I so look forward to working
with you all and I hope we have fun and enjoy each other’s company as well. We have already had our first meeting.
Last week Bridget and I met with our Arohata Prison contact and delivered 18
care packs – the goods were packed in the beautiful bags which were donated by Helen Westerbeke . They looked wonderful and I want to thank Sylvie and
Bridget for all their hard work. We will ask for donation of goods at a later
meeting as this is a charity we want to continue to support and we still have 18 bags to fill.
Our District meeting was postponed this year and is now on 25th July at Pararparaumu. As the AGM was held online this is a fun day with motivational
speaker Libby Carson. Please let Sylvie or me know if you would like to attend.
Several of us recently attended the National Changeover Dinner at the Copthorne Hotel. This was a lovely occasion and was attended by over 50 people from all
over New Zealand. The theme for the year was announced “Lead the Change”
and the new National President announced - Dot Anderson-Lee.
I am looking forward to seeing you all on the 28th July for my first meeting as
President.
Cheers
Liz
Club Meeting 30 June After several cancelled meetings due to Covid-19, members were
delighted to be back the Wellington Club.
The food, as always, was beautifully served.
How lucky we are to have this wonderful place for our meetings – food, venue,
excellent staff and AV support for only $30 each.
Heart Kids Those who were at the meeting appreciated the cards at each table that shared
information about the Heart Kids organisation which we could read before we had the excellent talk by Rachel Hopkirk.
Above is a sample from one of the tables. Thank you, Sylvie, for preparing these cards which also provided a way of mixing up table groups.
For more information visit https://heartkids.org.nz/
Bridget presented a cheque for $1000 to Heart Kids.
Changeover
This meeting was also our Changeover time. Bridget was thanked for her
work as president. I think you will all agree that she handled the role with
efficiency and style and she always kept the lines of communication open.
She will be remembered as a wonderful president in “unprecedented times.”
Liz Oliver was welcomed as our president for the coming year and she
spoke about the Inner Wheel theme for the year “Lead the Change”.
New Committee
There are five new committee members: Marilyn Gibson, Ina Hansen,
Gabrielle Marshall, Pam Milligan and Jillian Wellings.
They join current committee members:
Liz Oliver, Sylvie Granville, Beryl Green, Bridget Hughes, Toni Finkle,
Barbara Holmes, Rosemary Mirams.
District Day
This will take place on Saturday 25 July at Paraparaumu. A number of our
members are attending. If you would like to go, please get in touch with Liz Oliver or Sylvie Granville.
Raffle
The money from the raffle goes into our Inner Wheel charity account. The cost is 3 tickets for $5, or $2 for one ticket. There are two prizes each
month. Many see this as a donation but there is always the anticipation
that you might win. The committee have agreed to make the prizes a little
more worth winning!
These days many of us do not carry cash but if you can remember to
bring some, you can contribute to our charities and you may be lucky and
win!
Subscriptions
These are due to be paid before the end of August. There is no increase –
they remain at $55. Please pay online to the Inner Wheel account or bring to the next meeting.
Days for Girls
Robyn is having a sewing session on Saturday 25 July from 10am to 3pm.
You do not have to stay for the whole time – just what you can manage. There will be a shared lunch about 12.30. You do not need to be a skilled
sewer as there are pinning tasks as well. It will be at her home – 41

contact details are: [email protected], phone 479 7631 or 027

Group Activities Information Update Mahjong (Group 1) – Gloria Biggs
We have 20 members in our group so at the moment we are not accepting further members as we meet in each other’s homes. Not everyone comes every time but we don't want to put any pressure on our hostesses. We meet every second Monday at 1.30 p.m. except for public holidays. The roster coming up is: 20 July Bridget Hughes 3 August Gloria Biggs 17 August Mary Egley 31 August Glenys Crisp
Mahjong (Group 2) – Mary Prangnell
Our Tuesday Mahjong group meets weekly (except Inner Wheel night) at 1 pm in members’ homes. We are a small group of around 10 members
which usually fills one or two tables each week. It’s a casual group and
we have lots of fun. New members are most welcome and we do teach
new members how the game works. Eventually you will need a Mahjong set/card table and 4 holding boards but come along and see if you like the game first. Give it a go.
Bridge – Kathleen Brooker We have 16 members and we play on a Friday afternoon from 1:30pm
until about 4:45 pm depending on whether it is summer or winter. We
have a schedule which we have on Dropbox so that we can all access it
and make changes as to whether we are available to play or not. We have someone different each week to host in their home, usually up to two
tables (8 people) though some hosts can fit 3 tables if they choose. I send
an email each week to those as available for that Friday as per the
schedule and we go from there.
During lockdown we had a Zoom “afternoon tea” each Friday and also some of us played Bridge online together.
Book Group – Vivienne Spanjaard
This has been going since 2006 and has 12 members. They meet on the
third Thursday of the month at 1 pm at members’ homes. They have nine
meetings a year – in November they go out for lunch and they do not meet in December and January.
They all read the same book. The person who is hosting chooses the
book, finds the discussion questions and leads the discussions. They are not able to accept any new members at present.
Walking Group – not currently active
Movies – not currently active
Due to poor turnout this group is no longer operating.
Stitching - Sheryl Fryer
Stitching Group Meets every 2nd Wednesday from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
We meet at one another’s homes and our Hostess provides morning tea
and we bring our own lunch, and whatever stitching project we are working on.
RSVP the hostess is required.
Anyone interested in joining this group please contact one of the
members.

All members are welcome to join this daytime get together; to meet with other members or catch up with friends or to socialise if a Club Meeting
has been missed.

Bread Tags – Message from Margaret Robertson
Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
The organisation Bread Tags for Wheel Chairs has been recycling bread
tags in South Africa since 2006, collecting about 500kg a month. The tags
are sold to thermoplastic recycling company Transmutation based in a
small fishing village of Robe SA which makes and sells homewares from
the tags. Funds raised by the sale of the tags goes towards the purchase of wheel chairs for disabled children in South Africa.
Here’s what 600g of bread tags looks like. Let’s repurpose our bread tags
for a worthy cause and keep them out of our landfills! Hand them to me at Inner Wheel and I will pass them on.
Banner Our branch has purchased a new banner which will be used for
promotional purposes.
