Stories of violenceApril 24, 2012

To the Editor:

Outgoing Excalibur Editor-in-Chief Michael Sholars alleges in his March 28 editorial that the York campus is unsafe and that "the problems are coming from the area immediately surrounding our campus, one of the most infamous high-crime areas in the country."  This is an inflammatory, unsubstantiated, and misleading statement; Excalibur must correct it and accurately report the facts.  For example:  Two Frosh Week dorm rapists convicted in 2010 were white guys from campus -- a student and an ex-student.   Eighteen-year-old Junior Manon was tackled by police, beaten with walkie-talkies, held down, and died of asphyxiation on campus near Founders College in May, 2010; one of the policemen involved also took part in the beating of G20 protestor Adam Nobody seven weeks later at Queen's Park.  A white male ex-student and campus politico was charged with the rape and murder of a Chinese woman student last year in The Village.  A male first-year law student was charged with firing a shotgun through a woman student's dorm-room door in February.   The facts would seem to indicate that York may be bringing violence to the neighbourhood, not the other way around.

But Sholars says, "I don't care what statistics are brought up to argue that the York campus is just as safe as any other city...."  This astounding and wilful disregard of facts is simply unacceptable in any newspaper.     Excalibur should immediately apologize to our neighbours across Black Creek!   And a thorough, factual, and impartial investigation of York's role in the area's safety is long overdue.
