DOUBLE EDGE Double Edge, pianists Nurit Tilles and Edmund Niemann, this year celebrates its tenth anniver-

sary. Ms. Tilles and Mr. Niemann were introduced through their membership in Steve Reich and Musicians (both continue to collaborate regularly with that composer).

The work of this pair comprises a significant contribution to the literature for two keyboards. Its recordings of Paul Dresher's This Same Temple and David Borden's Anatidae were included in Keyboard Magazine's Best Innovative Albums of 1986.

An abiding interest in new music has resulted in several important commissions from Double Edge: Mr. Borden dedicated his "DoublePortrait" and "Part 2"and "Part 11" of Thecontinuingstory of Counterpoint to the duo; in the offing are premieres of works written for Double Edge by Scott Johnson, Aaron Kernis, Meredith Monk and Terry Riley.

Double Edge was recently heard in Pianorama, a celebration of American piano music that inaugurated Merkin Hall's Tenth Anniversary season.

mwmkM GLASS In recent years Philip Glass has become an increasingly prominent figure on the international

music scene. Perhaps most widely known for his 'portrait'operas Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha, Akhnaten, and for his larger-scale works for various media (film, theater, dance and choral scores), Mr. Glass has also written numerous compositions of smaller scope. He performs a selection of these more intimate, less familiar works on acoustic piano in his New Music Network concerts, his first full-concert appearances as solo pianist.

The Making of the Representative for Planet 8, Mr. Glass's fourth opera, received its world pre- mierein Julyat the Houston Grand Opera.Thecomposeralsomade hisdebutas theaterdirectorthis July with a production of 1000Airplanes on the Roof, a music-drama that was premiered in Vienna; the work will receive its American premiere on September 22 in Philadelphia.

Chicago-born composer Henry Threadgill played the piano as a child but was soon drawn to the saxophone, a move that might be attributed to his listening to Charlie Parker records. He later earned to play theclarinetand the flute. Followinga stint in the Army he furthered his musical studies i t several conservatories. During the 1960's Mr. Threadgill worked with pianistlcomposer Muhal Richard Abrams, playing in Abrams's Experimental Band. From that group evolved the Association or the Advancement of Creative Music, which'in turn launched a generation of jazz artists including he Art Ensemble of Chicago, Anthony Braxton and Mr. Threadgill's trio, Air.

Currently Mr. Threadgill leads five ensembles: the trio New Air, the Henry Threadgill Marching Band, a classical-fusion group called the Windstring Ensemble and the seven-member Henry Fhreadgill Sextett (two drummers, bass, cello, trombone, trumpet and saxophone).

WOMEN OF THE CALABASH The ensemble Women of the Calabash was formed by Madeline Yayodele Nelson in 1978 to pro-

mote and perform traditional African and Afro-American percussion and vocal music. In addition to preserving older traditions, Women of the Calabash also perform original works. Many of the instruments used in tonight's concert are hand-crafted by Ms. Nelson from calabash (a fruit indigenous to Africa and South America that is related to the squash or gourd family), bamboo and wood. Their repertoire of folk songs is performed a cappella and in original dialects.

Women of the Calabash has toured throughout the United States, the Caribbean, South America, the United Kingdom and West Africa. In 1987 Women of the Calabash received the Monarch Merit Award from the National Council for Culture and Art and made its television debut on the popular PBS series "Alive From Off Center."
