Book of the Living Gifts Behind the Scenes

Letter from the PresidentAutumn 2017I am honored to serve as President of the York Community Foundation. Our organization has shown tremendous growth and accomplished a great deal over the past thirty years. The future of the York

Community Foundation continues to look bright. Success of the Foundation is due to contributions and bequests.

Some of you may recognize this familiar face from our community of York! Since the beginning of 2017, Ruth Koch generously volunteers her time and calligraphy talents to the York Community Foundation.

Retired after 20 years of teaching sixth grade language arts at York Public Schools, Ruth’s interest in calligraphy began with a love of cursive writing -- and taking a one-night calligraphy class in York. Calligraphy was so fun and creative for Ruth that she continued learning and perfecting the technique on her own over the years.

Ruth is married to Scott Koch. They have three grown children and several grandchildren. Ruth keeps quite busy in retirement with her family and friends – so the York Community Foundation is ever so grateful for Ruth’s willingness to share her time and talent with the community.

Thank you, Ruth!

Community Partners of York Community Foundation

The York Community Foundation (Foundation), Prison Fellowship, and the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) are collaborating to support the construction of the Parenting Center Building at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) located in York. The York Community Foundation has the role of the grantee in requesting and accepting grants

and gifts from other foundations and donors. Prison Fellowship is working with the Foundation in developing the grant proposals and will provide key programs once the Parenting Center is operational. The NDCS has completed the design of the proposed building and has received the raised funds to be used to construct the building. Prison Fellowship is assisting the Foundation in tracking and reporting the progress of the project to the grantors.Prison Fellowship, founded in 1976, is the largest outreach to prisoners, their children, and families in the United States. Prison Fellowship is currently providing in-prison programs in Nebraska and last year served 2,330 Nebraskan children of incarcerated parents through its Angel Tree Program. Prison Fellowship’s mission is to restore those affected by crime and incarceration. The mission of NCCW is to serve and protect the public while providing a safe supportive and clean environment for women to grow and develop. Why the Parenting Center? Seventy-six percent of the women in prison in Nebraska are moms. They average three children each. Sixty-seven percent are single, and 59% share that their own moms were incarcerated. The Parenting Center will be used for educational programs that will result in stopping this generational cycle of crime.Since 1974 the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has developed parenting programs that address the needs of these children as well as those of their incarcerated parents. The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women was able to obtain a used building that served as a classroom and playroom for the children visiting their mothers. This building was demolished in 2013 due to age and deterioration. The small building facilitated a day/over night visiting program that was the first of its kind in the country. Over the years the facility has expanded on a parenting curriculum tailored specifically to the incarcerated mother, and the needs of their children, as they work to sustain their bond. Nebraska saw the success and potential of the program, and has been funded at the state level since 1976.The Parenting Center will support the many areas of need that motivate and enhance the possibilities of success for the inmate mothers – thus benefitting Nebraska communities when mothers are released from prison and return dedicated to their roles as a parent and as productive citizens.

Manufacturing, Inc. Another unique opportunity for WHLF -- The York Area Ag Hall of Fame finally found its permanent home on the south wall of the new equipment display building. Plus, an annual Celebration of Agriculture has been established through a collaboration with the York News Times. A lot of work will be completed during the winter- we are very excited to reveal the space in spring of 2018! On the order of community outreach, I am pleased to report that we have increased our involvement with community activities and strengthened partnerships with other organizations and businesses. WLHF has been present in local and state celebrations, tourism activities and other gatherings which promote our community. As we plan for the 2018 season, we realize that the Wessels Living History Farm Endowment held at the York Community Foundation can only provide limited funds for the operation of the farm. For this reason, we are seeking sponsors for our events as well as funding to maintain our historical structures on the farm. If your family or business is interested in partnering with us, please contact myself or any of our current board members. You will find a wealth of information on the refreshed WLHF website at www.livinghistoryfarm.org – a full listing of 2018 events, donation and sponsorship opportunities, volunteer opportunities, information about our governance and community involvement, and more . . . We invite you to join in the community support of Wessels Living History Farm so that we all may continue “keeping Dave’s dream alive”!

Sincerely,

Hillary Mundt, Director - Wessels Living History Farm

Wessels Living History Farm: Celebrating history and making some of our own!Wessels Living History Farm (WLHF) continues in striving to carry out Dave Wessels’ dream to educate. Our 12th season increases the visitor total to 57,178 from all 50 states and 52 foreign

countries. The farm hosted 9 rentals, 9 weddings, 12 special tours and 10 large events this year. In addition to the numbers, we have other things to be proud of…A steady increase in the number of classes taught on the farm brings this year’s total to 71! The hands-on experiences of the farm remain the driving force in the success of our educational programs. Several schools were welcomed to the farm for the first time this year, as well as home school groups, church groups, and families. WLHF hosted statewide learning opportunities for different programs, and educational events which brought guests from out of state. The positive reviews from educators, parents and students have propelled our program into one we think Dave would be proud of. As promised, WLHF has increased the farm demonstrations and educational opportunities for all ages during 2017. A series of presenters shared their love of Nebraska history- many with live music! Farm demonstrations with antique equipment attracted guests from across the state and provided the opportunity for some to participate and re-live moments of their past. One of the most important WLHF projects this year was the completion of the new equipment display building, made possible through contributions by the York Community Foundation, York County Visitor’s Bureau, private donors, and a match by Reinke

Autumn 2017

It is with great pleasure that I serve the York Community Foundation and the community of York.

Reflecting on our year of 2017 – The York Community Foundation awarded more than $68,000 with eight new community grants. A total of 34 new scholarships were awarded to students advancing their path to

higher education with the hope of realizing their goals and dreams. Additionally, 16 scholarship renewals were also awarded in regard to Winsor Tucker Scholarships and Eunice Troester Scholarships.

I am humbled by and very thankful for the many community-minded individuals and businesses who gave of their time, talents and financial resources to make possible the projects and programs funded by the Foundation. York is an impressive community and we have much to be proud of.

As we ponder the end of 2017, I invite you to join me in giving back to our community with a tax-deductible gift to the York Community Foundation. Together, we will continue our journey to make York a strong and sustainable community.

Happy Holidays to you and your families from the York Community Foundation Board of Directors and Staff!

Dear York Community Foundation,Thank you for your generous scholarship and support of my education. When Mr. Tucker established this fund and the requirements for it, he understood the value of education in creating the leaders, thinkers, and visionaries of the future. The York Community Foundation exhibits those values in setting standards that challenge people to do their best. I strive to represent at least some of what Mr. Tucker dreamed of and I thank you for giving me the opportunity. Your recognition and gracious gift is appreciated and humbling. Thank you.

— Sincerely, Ethan Hall
