Why Come back to an Ordeal?
Matthew Hornung
Every Arrowman in the Order of the Arrow takes part in at least one
Ordeal weekend in their lifetime. In the Chippanyonk Lodge, Arrowmen’s
Ordeal experiences range in location from Camp Resolute to Nobscot
Scout Reservation and in activity from setting up tents to painting
buildings. There is one thread through all of these experiences that ties
them together; although the weekend is centered on new Ordeal
candidates, there are many Arrowmen for whom the Ordeal in question is
not their first.
As a Brotherhood member of Chippanyonk, I have attended four
Ordeals since my own in May 2012. I confess that after leaving the
gates of Camp Resolute on Sunday morning three years ago, I did not
have any intention of voluntarily returning to an Ordeal. However
within three months, the lodge recruited me onto its kitchen staff,
locking me into returning year after year. And despite my initial
reluctance, I am so glad that I have.
The myth that surrounds the Ordeal is that it is focused only on
candidates’ service and induction requirements. That simply isn’t true.
An Ordeal is by far one of the greatest offerings that the Order of the
Arrow has to present to its members. Speaking from experience, I can
confidently say that some of my favorite experiences in Scouting have
come out of attending Ordeals. I’ve made many lifelong friends and
had some of the best weekends I can recall with fellow Arrowmen who
return to each Ordeal.
Many Arrowmen also return to help see others through the Ordeal
process. “You get the unique opportunity see the Ordeal candidates
going through the Ordeal process,” said Arrowman Austin Heisey.
Ceremonies Team
Isaac Niedzielski
Every Order of the Arrow lodge has a ceremonies team. This is the group who led you through your Ordeal and Brotherhood. Members of the ceremonies team work together learning the ceremonies, the traditions of the order and how to wear their regalia. You too can be a member of the ceremonies team. For more information just email [email protected] or ask someone at your next OA event.
Dance Team
Isaac Niedzielski
Not every lodge has a dance team. But after many years our lodge is building a new one. And we need your help. The dance team performs at lodge events, for troops and packs in the areas and can enter competitions. You can be a dancer or a drummer. The team meets regularly to work on their regalia and practice drumming and dancing. You can learn more by asking any lodge officer or emailing [email protected]

What to do after Ordeal
Austin Heisey So now that you have had your Ordeal, now what?
You might be wondering what comes next. Being an
Order of the Arrow member presents lots of unique
opportunities. The OA is a service organization and
gives back to the Council by doing service projects.
Not all that we do is service. The lodge sponsors
lots of fun activities. We have a fellowship weekend
were we do service in the morning, training in the
afternoon, and go to sky zone or snow tubing in the
evening. The National Order of the Arrow
Conference is held every three years and is
happening this year. NAOC is a big party that is a
weeklong on a big university campus. This year
there is expected to be about 14,000 arrowmen
attending. This year NOAC is filled, but you can still
go the conclave or Arrow tour. The conclave will be
at camp Yawgoog on June 5-7. Arrow Tour will be at
Camp Resolute it will be like a mini NOAC. These
are just a few of the cool activates you can do in
the OA.
Why Come back to an
Ordeal?
(Continued)
Of course, the reasons for returning
don’t stop at camaraderie or
memories either. With culinary
genius John Fortini running the
kitchen, an Ordeal attendee’s meals
as a returning Arrowmen can range
from pig roasts and cake-for-
breakfast to bacon bombs and fried
tortillas. Returning Arrowmen can
also sleep in greater comfort than
Ordeal candidates, with tents and
occasionally cabins available. The
reasons to come back are
numerous.
With that in mind, I hope to see
anyone who reads this at our next
Ordeal. Every weekend the lodge
spends together is unfailingly a
blast. Don’t miss out.

In this Centennial year, we must
pause for a moment and realize
the future is not guaranteed. It
is a future in our hands. Built
strong by three generations;
stewardship of the Order is now
our responsibility. And the
future of the OA will be
determined by how well we
carry the vision and deliver it to
the next generation.
These are truly weighty
responsibilities. Our
commitment will determine
how the next generation of
Scouts view camping, outdoor
adventure, and environmental
stewardship. Our leadership will
guide the willingness, character
and spirit of young men and
women to advance the
Brotherhood, Scouting, and
ultimately our nation.
The next 100 years will be what
we make it. Let’s join together
in Cheerful Service towards the
Bicentennial.

Chief’s Corner
Hello everyone!
This weekend has seen a very rare occurrence
for Chippanyonk Lodge. The first Ordeal at
Nobscot in years! Holding the Ordeal at
Nobscot has given us the opportunity to
improve the grounds and facilities of this terrific
reservation. Doing this we hope for more
troops to utilize Nobscot as the terrific camp
that it is!
Thank you for all your hard work!

Advisor’s corner
Fellow Arrowmen ,as a lodge we have done a lot so far this year ,but there is so much for ahead ,so many exciting events just for you . We held a fantastic Lodge annual banquet to coincide with our 2nd Beaver day, with our Spring Ordeal just around the corner and the NE1 section conclave the following weekend. After that our next BIG event is ArrowTour July 13 th at Camp Resolute ,Please stop by and see the travelling show on its way to NOAC at Michigan State University. I am sure you have read articles in this Yonk about the upcoming events but please remember that without you, our lodge doesn’t function all the work the youth put into planning an event does not mean anything unless you show up to participate. Troop leaders please consider the lodge calender when planning troop events. I look forward to seeing each of you at one of our next events during the summer and fall, we have so much planned for YOU, Even think about joining one of our committes and learn more about the Order of the Arrow. Thank you for all your hard work on behalf of our lodge Paul Gadd Adviser
