1 The world’s No.1 productivity
The Journal of Commerce Report covering more than 600 ma-
rine terminals placed Minami Honmoku Terminal at the top of the
year’s berth productivity in the world in its report “Port Productivi-
ty whitepaper” in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Port of Yokohama is
also ranked 5th in the category of top ports worldwide in 2014.
The high productivity of the Port of Yokohama is supported by
excellent teamwork and the outstanding skills of all those con-
cerned in terminal management.
3 Extensive domestic and international sea route network
The Port of Yokohama is linked with many international ports via 86* international container liner routes. The Port also boasts
the highest rate of international transshipments in Japan. A coastal feeder service provides extensive coverage of the domestic
ports on the Japan’s Pacific coast and enables the transfer of domestic cargo from the Port of Yokohama to the rest of the world.
Many major domestic and
international shipping com-
panies have a dedicated ter-
minal in the Port of Yokoha-
ma, which has established
the port as the hub of an ef-
ficient and stable logistics
network.

2 Deep-water wharf for large vessels
The Port of Yokohama is a fine natural harbor that originally had
a sufficient depth of water and little deposition of sediments.
Minami Honmoku Pier, which is a high-standard container termi-
nal with an alongside depth of 16 m, handles large container ves-
sels with a capacity of more than 10,000 TEU.
A new container terminal MC-3 with the world’s deepest quay-
side water depth of 20 m started operation in April 2015.The ter-
minal is able to accommodate ultra-large container ships with a
capacity of 18,000 TEU.
5. Superiority of the Port of Yokohama

4 Extensive domestic transport network
The Port of Yokohama is connected to the metropolitan area, which is the Japan’s largest area of consumers with 30% (ap-
prox. 35 million) of Japan’s population, through an extensive transport network of expressways and coastal barges.
(1) Road network
The Port of Yokohama is linked to the metropolitan area by an extensive road network, including expressways, making it possi-
ble to transport cargo from the Port of Yokohama to any destination in the metropolitan area within three hours.
At present, a ring road network is being developed and many sections will be completed. Thus access from the Port of Yoko-
hama to its hinterland will be further improved.
(2) Coastal container barges / Railways
The Port of Yokohama offers a coastal container barge
service that connects each port in the Tokyo Bay to pro-
vide a safe, secure and quick cargo transport service.
A coastal container barge has the capacity to ship a
large number of ocean-going containers and the load of
each barge is equivalent to the transportation of more
than 80 truckloads at one time. Compared with land
transportation, the barge service can significantly reduce
CO2 emissions and it is also an environmentally friendly
means of transportation.
Moreover, a rail freight network that reduces the envi-
ronmental impact of freight transport is available from the
Port of Yokohama to local cities in Japan.
