It is commonly argued that Sufis and their insEtuEons played a crucial role in the spread of Islam in medieval India. The similarity in appearance and conduct of life between Sufis and yogis resulted not only in frequent encounters, but also in acEve intermingling at Sufi and yogi lodges. Furthermore, similariEes in religious imaginaEon and pracEce paved the way to intellectual and religious encounters of Islam and Hindu religions mediated through yogic noEons and terminology.
