Welcome to BIAFF 2012

in Weymouth It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Weymouth for BIAFF 2012. I believe this is the first time this prestigious event has been held in the SoCo Region, and with the Olympic Sailing Events coming to Weymouth during July and August, what better time to host our first BIAFF. On the Friday afternoon there will be a Coach Trip to the Olympic Sailing Centre where you will be escorted to where the competitors are hard in earnest preparing for the Games. When you watch it on the ‘telly’ you’ll be able to say ‘I’ve walked along there!

On the Thursday evening Weymouth Cine & Video Club will be showing a Programme of Films and on the Friday evening, the newly renamed Peter Coles AV Competition Winners’ Show. On the Saturday as in previous years, there will be four cinemas from which to choose. Saturday Evening is the Gala Dinner and we welcome our Guest Speaker Michael Medwin who I am sure you will be familiar to you all, with many great films to his credit in his long and ongoing career.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SoCo Committee for all their hard work and the many hours they have spent preparing for this event. The four clubs who will be looking after the projection are Bournemouth, Frome, Weymouth, and Wimborne. I look forward to meeting you all, old friends and new. That’s The Way To Do It!

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our many friends and in particular those attending from outside the UK and for the first time. I hope you enjoy your visit to Weymouth and have a great film-watching weekend at BIAFF, which is the premier event in the IAC calendar.

This year the number of entries was in excess of 270 and exceeded our wildest dreams. Our thanks must go to our competition manager, David Newman who has once again risen to the occasion to ensure that we have a successful festival. This year the festival is being organised for the first time by Southern Counties region and I know they have been pulling all the stops out to ensure all our visitors will go home with happy memories. As I was privileged to be a final judge I can assure you that there have been some excellent films entered into this year’s BIAFF and I hope you will agree with me. If not I will be available in the bar to hear your views over a pint of ‘Lemonade’. Once again this year we will be running a special session for young filmmakers entries and I hope you will support them as they are our future and should be encouraged.

Thanks also must go to all our sponsors for their generous awards. In particular the Daily Mail, who are, once again, giving a magnificent silver salver for the winner of the best film in the festival to take away with them. Finally we owe thanks to all those who have made this Festival possible, the SoCo team and the projectionists, both for this weekend and the judging sessions, the judges who viewed and made written comments on all the entries and, of course, yourselves for coming to Weymouth and supporting this event.

Judges

Rob Day FACI Rob has been interested in films and home movies since school days. He did a paper round to buy his first 8mm cine camera! He joined Walsall Cine Society and won their “Open” competition. He later joined Lichfield Movie Makers and has been Secretary for many years.

When digital non-linear editing came along he adopted video as a viable means of production. Nowadays he co-produces videos for his local drama group and recently has become more involved in still photography and administration.

He serves on CEMRIAC Council and has just completed a second term as Chairman. He joined the IAC council in 2005 and is currently Club Liaison Officer, a member of the FVM Committee and has been a BIAFF judge many times.

Ron Prosser FACI Ron has been making films for 56 years starting on home processed 9.5mm film and progressing to 16mm for both personal and corporate productions. Eventually family commitments made 16mm a too costly exercise and he switched to Super 8mm. With electronic imaging quality improving he moved over to video and computer editing where it suddenly became possible to obtain the results that were only achievable with costly postproduction facilities studios in the days of film.

Films made over the years have earned him many awards in both national and international festivals and he was rewarded with a “Diamond” for his film Letters From The Front which also won a Guernsey “Lily” and a bronze medal at UNICA

Tom Hardwick FACI Tom started moviemaking in 1973 using a Canon 814E Super-8 camera. He won a Ten Best award in 1985 with his film Bus Stop

and decided to make filmmaking his career in 2001. He’s a freelance photographer and filmmaker and runs a very successful wedding and

events photographic business.

He also does a great deal of film to DVD conversion, and for the last ten years has written the Positive Image technical articles for the IAC’s

Film and Video Maker magazine. He was part of the BIAFF final judging team in 2005 and 2012.

The Best IACWebsite Awards 2012

Competition between the shortlisted sites was so close that the judges could not separate our

two main winners: • Bristol Film and Video Society and

• Reading Film and Video Makers who share this year’s prize.

What helped put them ahead of the rest was their extensive use of good quality, interesting photographs and video combined with an attractive page layout and enthusiastic text. Both clearly designed their sites to attract new members. Worth a special mention is the quality of members’ contributions to Bristol’s site and Reading’s Programme listing.

The judges decided there should be a separate award for clubs that concentrate on film production rather than regular meetings. This goes to

• Backyard Productions who had more impressive video material (finished films and behind the scenes clips) than any site we looked at.

All three sites had a great deal of content, with comprehensive and inspiring archive/history pages.
