Spring/Summer Program Guide
MASON CITY FAMILY YMCA
BE ADVENTUROUS TRY DIFFERENT THINGS
What an exciting time for your Mason City Family YMCA! We
have actively been participating in the Blue Zones Project for
Mason City. We had a site visit on March 14 and as this guide is
printing, we are waiting to see if Mason City is chosen as a Blue
Zones community.
This year marks the 120th anniversary of the Y in Mason City.
We are planning a week long celebration beginning with Healthy
Kids Day on April 28th and ending with a celebration on the
actual anniversary, May 6. Please watch for more information
about this important event and mark your calendars for a week
of fun and celebration.
We have been honored to receive a $10,000 grant from the
National Inclusion Project. We will be incorporating Let’s ALL
Play into our summer day camp. Let’s ALL Play includes
inclusive modifications that work for programs overall or
individuals as well as inclusive games and activities that benefit
ALL children. Chelsie Wood, Youth Development Director, and
Michelle Sorenson, Health, Wellness & Sports Director, have
received training to learn skills to serve families effectively,
build lifelong friendships for children, achieve positive
behaviors, prevent and handle bullying, and create accessible
activities for children with special needs to be included in our
Summer Day Camp. Our goal is to involve 10 children in the first
year of this project.
And finally, please remember to support the Partner of Youth
Campaign beginning in May. As always, thanks for supporting
YOUR Mason City Family YMCA.

Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in
the water through guided instruction with parents.
The child will be exposed to games that use basic
movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes,
and breath control. Activities are based on the
developmental abilities of the child. Classes held in
the warm-water therapy pool.
3-5 Aqua Shrimps - Ages 3 yrs - 5 yrs.
This is a parent/child class which helps
acquaint very young children with the joys
of water. As the class progresses, the
instructor slowly begins working more
individually with children on skills to help
ready them for preschool classes without
parents.
Select a swimming class that
fits your child’s skill level.
PRIMARY LESSONS (6 mos. - 5 yrs.)
PRESCHOOL LESSONS (3 - 5 yrs.)
Fish - At this point, students
work to perfect the front crawl,
elementary backstroke, back crawl,
breaststroke kick and butterfly kick.
(Red Cross level 5.)
Pike - This level helps children learn safe
pool behavior, adjust to the water, and
develop independent movement through
stroke and kicking skills and becoming
comfortable putting their face in the
water while doing other skills.
Ray - Children at this level review floats
on both front and back. They will also kick
with a kickboard the length of the pool,
improve on over-arm recovery and
adjustment to deep water.
Starfish - Children review and improve
previous skills, build endurance, learn to
tread water and perform more progressive
diving skills. Children can swim half-way
across the pool on their front and back
crawl without assistance by the end of this

school age children which acquaints them
with the pool. By the end of this level,
they should know their front and back
floats, master paddle stroke and over-
arm recovery stroke. Children also learn
survival float and treading water.
(Compares to Red Cross levels 1 & 2.)
Eel - This advanced beginner level is for
children who are comfortable and more
independent in the water. They are
taught to flutter kick, float by themselves
and over-arm recovery stroke.

Guppy - Children continue to practice and
build upon basic skills such as master
paddle stroke, treading water and survival
float. They are also introduced to front
crawl and back crawl.

water and survival float longer to increase
their endurance. (Red Cross Level 6)

to improve their strokes with starts, turns
and dives, learn the sidestroke, and the
lifesaving medley. Students learn basic
first aid and treatment for shock.

exposed to a wide range of aquatic
experiences. In class, these advanced
