ALL THE FUN OF THE CARNIVAL

FOR the third year running, YMCAHumber was part of theCleethorpes Community Carnival.

Young’s Seafood again sponsored thecarnival, which took place onSaturday 19th July, and there wereover 80 floats and attractions with avariety of colourful and excitingthemes, including World War I and theWorld Cup.

For their float, YMCAHumber chose to followthe summer’s festival offootball but with atwist!

Futsal is a variant ofstandard associationfootball and is oftenplayed indoors on asmaller field, with thefocus being more onball control andtechnique than the morephysical aspects of the game.

The game was developed at YMCAs inUruguay in 1930 and was popularisedat YMCAs in Brazil during the 1950s.

So it was only fitting that YMCAHumber celebrated Futsal’s rich historywithin the movement and thepopularity of leagues in Grimsby, which are housed at the Peaks LaneHousing Project, through their float.

Young people and staff donnedfootball kits donated by Grimsby Townand painted their faces in the coloursof flags from participating nations inthis year’s World Cup tournament.

They were joined by youngsters fromthe Grimsby Futsal League, who filledthe float with colour, vibrancy and

plenty of noise!

And the thousands along the routewere treated to special YMCAgiveaways, as well as leaflets andinformation on the services that YMCAHumber provide for the localcommunity.

Jocelyn Dennis, Community YouthWorker, led the party at the carnival

and she spoke of the enjoymentthat everyone had on theday.

She said: “I just want tothank everyone whocontributed to theday for their help.

“It was a real teameffort, the floatlooked great andeveryone involvedhad a great time.”

Andy Tappin, Youth andCommunity Services

Manager added:

"Everyone had a fantastic time and itwas great to promote the work ofYMCA Humber.

"One of the young Futsal players'parents thanked us for letting them bepart of the day, which is what it is allabout."

YMCA Humber was one of thecharities that benefited from over£4,000 that was raised from thecarnival’s bucket collection.

EMMA LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

“I WOULD love to come back oneday and help out,” – those were thewords of Emma, a young personwhopreviously residedat our PeaksLane Housing Project.

Emma has recently moved into her ownindependent living in Grimsby but she readilyadmits she wouldn’t be in the place she istoday without the help of staff at YMCAHumber.

“I can’t thank them enough,” shestated.

“It’s not justoneor twopeoplebut the whole team, theywere all absolutelyfantastic with me.”

Emma moved into theproject in 2012 after aturbulent few months inher personal life that hadhadanegative impactonher health and well-being.

But, on arrival at the project, she told keyworkers that she wasdetermined not to ‘enter her oldcycle of life’ and set about looking fortraining courses and volunteeringopportunities.

And she soon settled into lifeatthe project. One of her firstachievements wasdeveloping her cookingskills from the basics andalso sitting on aninterview panel for theCustomer ServiceOfficervacancies.

She also beganvolunteering at Foresight inGrimsby, as well as impressingwith volunteering in the kitchenat Peaks Lane – particularly inensuring that her peers were happywiththeir meals.

One thing staff praised Emma for during hertimewith YMCAHumber was the immaculateconditionofher room, so it cameasno surprisewhen she obtained a work placement withTukes to assist in the cleaning andmaintenance of their projects.

Emma also prided herself on her budgetingduring her time with YMCA and she was ableto use savings and a Community SupportGrant to help furnish her new

accommodation.

She said: “Budgeting is one ofthe things that is importantand sometimes hard forstaff to get across toyoung people.

“It iseasy tobegenerouswith your money, sometimes even moreso when you don’t havea lot of it.

“That is one of the things Ihope tocomebackandhelp

with because I have been thereand know what it is like.”

In closing, Emma looked back on her twoyears at YMCA Humber with

fondness, picking out twoevents as real highlights.

“I think the carnival lastyear and the twopancake races I wonwere really fun andshow a different side tothe work of YMCA.

“It was brilliant when weall dressed up on the floatas the Village People and

there were so many peoplewaving and cheering us on!”

“It’s not justone or two peoplebut the whole team, they were allabsolutely fantasticwith me.”

FUNDRAISERS for YMCA Humber took to theirspace hoppers once more as the HumberHop returned to the region on Sunday 27thJuly.

Over 50 people took part in the event, which raised money for our CommunityGames scheme – encouraging sportingparticipation across the region.

Participants hopped for one mile along theworld famous Humber Bridge on a hotsummer’s day in East Riding.

And they came from allover the Humber Regionto hop for charity, meeting at Waters’Edge in Barton-upon-Humber, where therewas also a Wildlife Daythat featuredinformation stalls and abird of preydemonstration, amongstother activities.

Kate Robbins from Cleethorpes is amember of the Grim Revers roller derbyteam and she was the first to hop across thebridge during the 2014 event.

She said: “It was a lot harder than Iexpected!

“The mile doesn’t look much when you viewthe Humber Bridge from the riverbank but itis quite daunting when you get up there.

“But we got through it in the end. There wereonly two of us in our team, I think weneeded a few more of our roller derby teamto take part next year and give us a hand!”

Organiser of the event, Jenny Hodson,Community Games Coordinator for YMCAHumber was again delighted with the

turnout.

“This is he second year we have run the Hopand it has proved popular once again,” sheadded.

“It is great to see so many people, of allages and backgrounds, taking part in theevent.

“Participation in sport becomes a lot moreenjoyable when you make it fun and

that is really what CommunityGames and the Humber Hopis all about.”

And there were threeteams who took partfrom the charity itself.Youth and CommunityServices ManagerAndy Tappin led twoteams from the PeaksLane Housing Project

across the bridge butspecial mention must go to

Elena Doyle, Customer ServiceOfficer, who hopped the entire mile in

a solo effort!

But that was not the end of the hopping asfar as YMCA Humber was concerned!

in August, we were approached by HeidiElkington from Ulceby, regarding the LifestyleProject and two young people, herdaughter Charlie and friend Joseph, whowere looking to raise funds for YMCAHumber in a Humber Hop with a difference.

The pair were looking to hop across theHumber Bridge as a three-legged pair, which they achieved in just over an hour.

For more on their fundraising exploits, pleasevisit our website www.ymca-humber.com inthe coming days.
