    Your local YMCA was built in 1985 as an investment in thehealth and wellness of the Town of Collingwood. For 27years it has provided much needed aquatic programs andrecreation services to thousands of area residents.

    In 2009, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka completed Phase I ofa three phase rejuvenation strategy that saw an expandedfacility including additional meeting rooms and state of theart conditioning centre at total cost of 1.8 million. Thisaddition has been a great success and has seen member-ship numbers rise to over 4,000 individuals, children andfamilies at our Central Park facility.

    In the spring of 2011, the Town of Collingwood and the

    YMCA entered into partnership discussions to create alarger vision for the redevelopment of Central Park asa multi-use recreation centre. The Central Park VolunteerRedevelopment Steering Committee was commissioned bythe Town of Collingwood to determine the public recre-ation needs in Collingwood, and the best options for thisredevelopment of Central Park, to be presented to Councilin early March 2012. This plan includes the addition of twinpad arenas, an expanded 25 metre pool and additionalparking all encompassed by a Main. St. corridor connectingthe rinks, YMCA and the existing curling club under oneroof. For more information you can visit the towns blog at

    To prepare for the eventual addition of a new pool tank the YMCAis moving forward in coordination with the Town of Collingwoodwith the Phase II of construction estimated at $1.54 m. Thissecond phase of construction is scheduled to begin in March 2012and will consist of remodeling the current locker rooms into a fivelocker room system, including a new co-ed special needs/familylocker room, adult only male and female locker rooms, and generalmale and female locker rooms. These renovations will give accessto recreation for opposite gender parents and grandparents, thosewith opposite gender caregivers and support workers, and those

    requiring wheelchair accessible changing facilities, to name a few.The adult only locker rooms will also give access to thoserequiring increased privacy.

    The final phase of construction will depend on the decision thetown makes in March after the recommendations for Central Parkare presented to council.
