ALL-NEWCABINS!

Dear parent,

As a father of two teenage sons, I fully appreciate the challenges faced in trying to provide positive experiences that will help prepare our children for the future. For this reason, we’re eager to partner with you as we know how much a camp experience can enrich your child’s life.

With a smaller camper capacity, Camp Carson is a place that feels like family and enables us to give each child more personal attention. Under the guidance of nurturing role models from the US and around the world, kids are Accepted for exactly who they are and are socially safe to discover more about themselves and others.

Camp offers a safe environment where kids are encouraged to explore a variety of Challenges through cabin life and our diverse range of activities. We strive to help every child reach their God-given potential. To leave camp Empowered to take on life’s opportunities as confident, caring, responsible, honest young people of strong character and faith.

We invite you to keep reading and see how we can help your child ACE the summer.

Mark ScoularExecutive Director

The YMCA of Southwestern Indiana, Inc., following the example of Jesus Christ, responds to community needs by serving all

people, especially youth, through relationships and activities that promote healthy spirit, mind and body.

ACCEPTED CHALLENGEDEMPOWEREDCabin LifeLiving in modern but rustic cabins with 2 counselors and 9 cabin mates, campers will connect as a “family.” Cabin counselors guide campers in building friendships and relationships through a combination of individual attention and purposeful group interactions.

Cabin Mates• Are accepted for who they are and are

emotionally and socially safe to pursue their God-given potential

• Experience a positive living environment as they encourage each other and celebrate successes together

• Build strong relationships in a setting where teamwork, cooperation and respect are expected and championed

• Communicate in face-to-face conversation as they “unplug” for a week and participate in intentional group discussions and cabin devotions

• Assume responsibility as they take care of personal belongings—learn respect for others as they share living space

Camp Activity

Under the careful supervision and encouragement of our counselors, campers exercise their decision-making skills by choosing their activities and setting personal goals.

Our “challenge by choice” philosophy encourages campers to stretch their comfort zones and discover they can do so much more than they imagined.

CHALLENGEDEMPOWERED

ACCEPTED

The camp experience fosters confidence and inspires campers to take on even more challenging endeavors at camp and in life.

Tomorrow’s leaders can start their journey at Camp Carson.

Empower your child to face the future with confidence. Invest in a camp experience and give your child the opportunity to gain vital life skills to better take on life’s challenges.

We consider it a privilege to serve young people in this way and invite you to join our camp family.

TRADITIONAL CAMPSSHOSHONE CAMP: 1 Week, Coed, Ages 7-16Traditional camp provides opportunities for exploration and discovery. From a large variety of activities, campers choose how to spend their mornings and set their own goals as to the skill levels they wish to achieve. “Challenge by choice” allows campers to take ownership of their morning. Afternoons are cabin group-centered while evenings cover an array of camp-wide events.

Optional Horseback Riding

Optional Dirt Bike Program

First-year Dirt Bikers will participate in a 21-step instructional program on clutch control dirt bike riding and safety and progress to trail riding.

Returning Dirt Biker program only available after completing Camp Carson’s First-Year Dirt Biker program.

FOX CAMP: 3 Day Mini-camp, Coed, Ages 7-8

WRANGLER CAMP: 1 Week, Coed, Ages 11-15“Horse Camp” provides campers an introduction to the responsibilities and joys of horses with lots of riding time and hands-on experiences.

WEEKEND STAYOVER: Campers staying for 2 consecutive weeks will spend Saturday at Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari.

LEADERSHIP CAMPS PROGRESSING FROM CAMPERS TO COUNSELORS

LIT (Leader in Training) 2 Weeks, Coed, Rising 10th GraderLITs explore their potential through a variety of unique on-site and off-site activities that foster teamwork and leadership skill development. There’s also lots of time to enjoy traditional camp activities.

CIT (Counselor in Training) 2 Weeks, Coed, Rising 11th GraderAs a tight-knit group, CITs spend their first week learning techniques of caring for and encouraging younger campers as well as exposure to the counselor activity responsibilities. In the second week, CITs are individually assigned to live in a cabin and are mentored to develop skills that will enable them to apply to become a Jr. Counselor.

DIABETES CAMPINdependence Diabetes Camp and Diabetes CIT Camp1 Week, Coed, Ages 9-15 with Type 1 Diabetes (CIT – 2 weeks, Rising 11th Grader)This week combines a traditional week of Shoshone camp with the advantage of living with other campers who deal with T1D as the norm. At an age-appropriate level, campers will gain a little more “independence” as they learn more about counting carbs, checking blood sugar and how to balance food, insulin and physical activity. Thanks to our partner, St. Mary’s Medical Center, a physician, nurses and nutritionists specifically qualified to deal with T1D provide additional education and diligent care for these campers. Financial support for this camp provided by the Jay Cutler Foundation.

MILITARY FAMILIESOPERATION PURPLE CAMP: 1 Week, Coed, Ages 7-15In partnership with the NMFA, this free week of camp is offered exclusively to children of military families with a parent who is currently deployed. Go to www.militaryfamily.org and click on Our Programs tab.

OPERATION MILITARY SUPPORT: 1 Week, Coed, Ages 7-15This subsidized camp is offered to children of military families with parents who are active in the armed forces but may or may not be currently deployed. Committed Camp Carson donors enable us to reduce fees by 50% for these families.

CAMP CORRAL: 1 Week, Coed, Ages 8-15In partnership with Camp Corral, founding sponsor Golden Corral, this free week of camp is offered exclusively to children of military families. Top priority is given to children in a military family where a service member has been injured, wounded, is disabled as a result of service or has fallen in action. Children of veterans are also eligible. For more info, go to www.campcorral.org

FAMILY CAMPLABOR DAY WEEKENDSaturday 9:00am - Monday 1:00pmJoin us for a great weekend when family members of all ages experience camp together. Enjoy camp activities on land and on the waterfront as well as fun group activities and challenges. The food is great and best of all, no cooking or meal planning for mom! Check our website for more information about this weekend.

WHY 3 RATES? As a YMCA, we realize families have differing abilities to pay for camp and have instituted a 3-rate pricing option. The camp program is the same regardless of the rate you choose. The program is based on an honor system by which we simply trust each family to voluntarily choose the rate they are able to pay.

RATE AActual cost of providing a week of camp for a child. Includes expenses for staff, maintenance, food, programs, supplies and depreciation due to wear and tear.

RATE B and RATE CSubsidized rates available for families who do not qualify for traditional scholarships but still need some financial assistance. Rate B & C subsidies are funded by Annual Campaign donors.
