WHAT IS YIPIYAP?Yipiyap is an in-school tutoring service which provides a wide range of academic support

Alternative ProvisionAP is an educational lifeline for students which can be delivered on or off-site, in an inclusion centre or the carer’s home.

“Everyone involved has been really supportive and appreciative of the

work that I’ve been doing and it has really felt like I have made a big difference. Seeing the same child several times a week for such long periods of time has meant he has progressed a lot and it really is a great feeling.”Chris Wilson, Yipiyap Tutor

LACTutors build trusting relationships with students, delivering support in line with their PEP.

“Having Elena as a tutor has massively helped E out in class and I have seen a massive improvement in her ability and attitude recently.”Mr J. Morson, Maths Teacher, Manchester Enterprise Academy

Mainstream/PPTutors can be deployed in-class, taking extractions or a mix of the two.

“Josh and I devised a timetable giving him the chance to help students within years 8, 9, 10 and 11. After the November mock exams, Josh provided an analysis of the results which helped the department correctly set each pupil, create intervention groups and ascertain missing skills. Josh was able to correct these in smaller intervention groups of students, focusing on specific weaknesses and teaching exam technique.”Ms E.Morley, Head of Maths, Prestatyn High School

GCSE ResitsTutors provide past paper practice and QLA-based topic revision which boosts resitters’ confidence.

“I have seen a vast change in I’s confidence in class since attending the additional sessions with Faye.

I is attempting more questions in class before asking for help and even then it’s only to clarify points or check she is on the right track (99% of the time she is)!”Ms A. Anderson, GCSE Maths Lecturer, City College Norwich

5 years’ Support We work with Yipiyap tutors in Maths, English and AP. We have found the calibre of the tutors

to be excellent year on year - they are relatable to our students and are quick to form working relationships.

We like the way we can flexibly deploy tutors over full days and the support undoubtedly impacts student outcomes.

Mr A. Moorcroft, Principal, Beamont Collegiate Academy, Warrington

6 years’ Support In 2013/14 our support was 1:1 with targeted LAC. The improvement in students’ confidence and progress was clear so we have continued to offer this every year and have extended to in-class support and AP as well.

We have different Yipiyaps each year and all are

technically capable, conscientious individuals

who bring a positive dynamic to students’ learning. They do a great job!

Mrs P. Jarvis, Vice Principal, Manchester Enterprise Academy

Ofsted agree our tutors are effective!“The use of curriculum mentors through the ‘YIPIYAP’ initiative is effective and provides challenge and support for both the most able pupils and pupils who need to catch up, in English, mathematics, science and modern foreign languages.”

FAQs Which subjects can tutors support? Maths, English and Science are the most commonly requested and our tutors are all proficient in one or more or these subjects. AP tutors will deliver a mix of all the Core subjects and other subjects are available on request.

What kind of training do the tutors have before they join us? Tutors have training in the following areas: learning styles, behaviour management, collaborative learning, planning, 1:1 and small group tutoring, in-class support and their subject specialism. They also have training in the Yipiyap Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy, how to look after their mental health and a staffroom survival guide!

Do the tutors have a DBS certificate? All tutors have an enhanced DBS check and barred list check.

Do they prepare their own resources? Tutors prepare their own resources or use the resources available in their department or as directed by class teachers.

Can they work with small groups? Tutors work with groups of not more than three students. In-class intervention is most effective when tutors give targeted support to a maximum of three students rather than general support in class.
