    Fellows share their experiences

    Saurav Neel Patyal

I was all set to join the prestigious London

Business School when the mail came.

    Congratulations! You have been selected

or the Young India Fellowship programme.Since coming to YIF, I have been exposed to

things outside my comort zone rom Day

Zero. Studying the liberal arts in power-

    packed intensive courses with assignments,

projects and term papers galore, I have

never read and written so much or any

academic curriculum in my lie. (No prizes

or guessing I am an Indian engineer!) I have

been challenged at many points, even in this

short period o three months, to go beyond the

objective to the subjective, coerced nearly to

appreciate the abstract nature o qualitativeanalysis. I resisted and, in all honesty, I still do.

But I can eel the sel-constructed high walls

o supposed ocus in my head melting away

as I begin to appreciate opinions and ideas

beyond the boundaries o knowledge I was

acclimatised to. As the days fy by, I wonder

where else could I have got the opportunity to

analyse Sachins Charisma or a term paper,

    hypothesise about The Cultural Imperialism

o Bollywood in a presentation, read about

Weber and Durkheim on the same day I read

Peter Drucker and heard the CEOs and MDso PE rms and media houses back to back!

Mark Twain said: Twenty years rom now you

will be more disappointed by the things that

you didnt do than by the ones you did do. So

throw o the bowlines. Sail away rom the sae

harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore. Dream. Discover. I think I just might

have taken my rst step at hedging my

    disappointments 20 years rom now.

I would like to share my experience about my

rst art class ater a long time. It was my debut

perormance to paint on a canvas. I elt the

artist in me while expressing my emotions

on it. I initially thought o ollowing some

structure like a design in a triangle or waves,

but suddenly a thought came in my mind

when I saw the small red paper over the new

canvas. I, then, thought o making a structure

o a heart on the red paper. For the rst time,

ever, I was able to cut the design without using

    scissors...and bingo...it was symmetrical. I

was excited to use this template o heart and

started brush painting. I kept enjoying it. I

was immersed in the joy o painting. At the

same time, I was aware o the surroundings in

the auditorium. I liked the act o spraying the

paint on the canvas, especially the ne dots

which signied lie or me. These dots were like

the granules o salt sprinkled on resh salad.

I elt each dot was communicating with me.

This was elt on my nails as i they had jumped

rom the canvas to my hand. At the same time

as the deadline was approaching, the hearts

started completing the entire picture. I elt

detached while painting, as rightly said by Dr

Kiran Seth in a recent class. I was ullling the

responsibility o completing the task assigned.

I was thoroughly engaged in it and nished itbeore the deadline. I elt a sense o connecting

to my inner sel. Thank you Nikumb sir (the

aamir o Taare Zammen Par) or engaging me

    in a meaningul activity.

Looking orward to more such activities!

    Praise or Fellows

It has been a privilege and a pleasure

interacting with the Fellows. They are bright,

eager and as a pleasing change rom the

jaded proessional student, do not shy away

rom taking intellectual risks. I know that thisis a hand-selected group but i this is the ace

o the new India then we are in good hands.

Prof. Andre Beteille, sociologist andwriter: In one instance, on being asked aquestion o some deep thinking, he repliedimmediately, breaking the question intotwo as the rst part being empirical and thesecond being an administrative one. Thisbeore hal o us could even comprehendthe question in the rst place. Whether it bequoting rom the Dharamashastra or beingtold a certain act about Hinduism or citingdirect conversations o Gandhi and Nehruon democracy, the knowledge which ProBteille had was incredible and unparalleled. Each hour o the talk had reerences romthe greatest o the thinkers rom Rousseauto Thoreau to Marx to Weber to Voltaire toAmbedkar. You name it and we have eitherheard it rom him or asked to ollow up. Iam just delighted to be able to share the

same space-time continuum with this greatthinker. I clarity o knowledge is something,Pro Beteille is crystal! Raghav Mimani

Professor Bhandaribuilds a nearlygraphic backdrop by choosing only the

very appropriate jargon and terminology. It then becomes very easy or a student toanalyse the issue at hand in the backgroundo this clear imagery. This attention topaint a complete picture through wordsspeaks volumes about his vast knowledgeo the topic and also about his expertisein delivering a lecture without making ituninteresting or peripheral.

    In the Beginning: Camping at

    Saat-taal, Kumaon

Amidst the lush green environs of a quiet andremote camp-site, fresh mountain air, crisp rays

of sunshine and intermittent spells of rain waswhere we felt our year-long leadership journeyhad begun!

The three-day camp in the Kumaon hills was toserve as an ice-breaker for the large and diversebunch that we were. It proved to be so. In factthe trio hypnobaba, Santhosh Babu; notedtheatre personality, Asif Basra and self-taughtlife-junkie, Avik Chatterjee, who were ourguides at the camp promised that at theend of three days we would not only know each

others names but something more towards alasting friendship. We were taught simple thingsthrough various exercises and games to listen,to respond, to communicate, to share storiesand the very basics of group dynamics.

Fellows also tried their hand at river-crossing,played cricket and badminton whenever theycould find the time in between, discussed birdsand the Himalayan ecosystem with SanthoshBabu, a wildlife enthusiast; sang songs arounda bustling campfire, saw some of our Fellow-

mates get hypnotised (!) and even had anexciting time putting up a theme-based playovernight! We shared our stories and graspedfully that each of us had come to YIF withgreat expectations to fulfil this journey ofself-discovery. - CHITEISRI DEVI

    Heritage Walk and More!

Dr. Dwight Jaggard has helped analysethe strengths and weaknesses of all ofus individually and took time to suggestimprovements. As a gesture of goodwill to him,the YIF team arranged a Heritage Walk to theHumayuns Tomb. With the paragon of wisdom,Dr. Andre Beteille, our professor of Sociologygiving insight into the various aspects of themonument and the society at large, a good twohours at the tomb thrust into us the bygonesplendour of the Mughal era. Two Fellows,Garima Rana and Mohammed Irfan Dar, took

the initiative of taking us around the tombexplaining the fine details of the tomb. Theentire team was awestruck when another Fellow,Suvajit Chakroborty, elaborated the variousmyths and truths behind the tomb.
