Academy Newsletter Edition 5, May 2012 Welcome from the Academy Principal, Mr R Gilbert Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to this newsletter for May 2012. During this term, the most significant event that has taken place was our expected Ofsted inspection of the 4-19 All Through Academy. By now you should have received a covering letter and a copy of the Ofsted report that is also published on the Academy and Ofsted websites. I hope you have been able to take the time to read through the main part of the report itself. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of the inspection, and particularly the written report that we have received. From a secondary perspective, it really does show that the progress made in recent years has been regarded as ‘Good’. This has been borne out by the improvement in examination results, as you know, but I also feel that there are other elements of our success that contribute hugely to the experiences that children are now receiving at Yate International Academy. Recognition of improved behaviour, positive attitudes to learning and the Academy being a calm and pleasant place to work, for me, are key indicators of the improvement made. High attendance has also been recognised as well as our continued work with our parents/carers. The report also shows that we are not complacent, in any way, and that, through our systems and processes, we are in a very strong position to take the whole 4-19 All Through Academy further in providing very good education for all of the students we serve. The three points for us to consider, in terms of further improvement, did not come as a surprise. We flagged up these issues to Ofsted, through our own self evaluation, and the fact that they agreed with us is a clear indication that we are moving in the right direction. These areas for improvement will form the basis of our development planning for the next twelve months, in the short term, as we look to moving from ‘Overall Satisfactory’ to at least ‘Good’ with the potential to become an ‘Outstanding’ Academy in the next few years. I am very confident that we will achieve this. I could not write this editorial without making reference to the successes that students from the Academy, along with students from Culverhill School, had at Rock Challenge 2012. It was a privilege to be part of the audience that watched the Academy perform in Portsmouth on the very first day in Term 5. The work and commitment that have been put in by students, alongside staff, parents/carers, volunteers and former students, was nothing short of remarkable. The performance itself was of such a high standard, with the choreography being both challenging but also exact and precise in its nature. This was complemented by outstanding costuming, along with good quality staging and lighting, making the whole experience a wonderful occasion. To achieve second place in this heat was excellent and we now look forward to their successes in the Area Final on 8 th June 2012, during the half term break. My sincere thanks go to Mrs Bell and her large team of supporters (too many to mention by name). Once again they have all shown that, by generating a real sense of community spirit amongst our students, the outcome is that they can excel in an area of performance that they not only enjoy, but are entirely at one with. On 14 th May 2012, the GCSE/AS/A2 examination season got underway and by the end of June, the exams will have all been completed. I would like to particularly pass on my best wishes to all Year 11 and 13, especially Year 13 leavers, who are moving on to university or the beginnings of their chosen career path. I am sure that they will have fond memories of Yate International Academy (and its predecessor, King Edmund Community School) and we look forward to hearing about their successes in the future.

By the time you receive this newsletter we will only be a few weeks away from the handover of the new build. There is still a lot to be completed prior to moving out of our current accommodation into the new build itself. I would like to take this opportunity of reminding all parents/carers that the end of Term 6, for students, is 3pm on Friday 13th July 2012 and that, during this final week, all students will be given a tour of the new build in relation to their own orientation and understanding of the location of particular classrooms and learning areas. They will also be given clear directions, with regards to the entrance to the site, with effect from September, which will be temporary in the first instance. For your information, from 31st July 2012, the main Academy entrance will no longer be available as it will become part of the Willmott Dixon site during the demolition of the current buildings phase. This means that the entrance for students and visitors to the Academy will be mainly via the current Willmott Dixon site entrance on Stanshawes Crescent. There will also be a temporary gated student entrance adjacent to the Science block located off Stanshawes Drive. During the early part of Term 6 I will write to all families confirming the arrangements for these entrances. We are hoping that this temporary arrangement will be in place only until the end of Term 1, however it will depend entirely on the extent to which the buildings become demolished prior to the landscaping of the current entrance being completed. I am sure that we will be able to manage this minor inconvenience in a very secure way and I thank you all in anticipation of your cooperation. Other key events taking place in Term 6 include our annual sports day, which this year falls within the National Sports Week, and will clearly have an Olympic theme, in relation to celebrating London 2012. As an Academy with a Sports specialism, we feel it is highly appropriate to celebrate this key national event in the best way we can and enable all young people to participate fully in the day on offer. We will also welcome our new Year 7 intake at the transition days at the end of June. This will be followed by an INSET Day (the last of this academic year) on Friday 29th June, when the Academy is closed to all students. Can I conclude by thanking you for reading this newsletter and I hope you find other articles informative in keeping up to date with developments within the Academy itself. I look forward to further communications with you from the start of Term 6.

It is very clear that the expectations placed on us as an Academy, by the Department for Education, as well as our sponsors, is that all students conform to Federation policies. Therefore I would ask your support in ensuring your child comes to the Academy each day in the appropriate uniform. To remind you all:

The Academy blazer is a compulsory item and must be worn at all times

The Academy jumper is optional, but is the only garment to be worn over the top of the mandatory white shirt and Academy tie. No other garments are permitted whatsoever, including cardigans, hoodies etc.

The Academy tie must be worn properly

Black shoes are compulsory at all times

Grey trousers, or knee length skirts for the girls, are the only garments to be worn in addition to the above. Leggings are not permitted.

If your child does not wear the correct uniform you will be notified on a consistent basis. We expect your child to turn up every day, on time and dressed in the appropriate manner. Please ensure they do so!

IN THE INTERESTS OF SAFEGUARDING Parents and Carers are reminded that if your personal contact details change e.g. telephone/mobile numbers/work numbers or addresses, then Yate International Academy should be informed as soon as possible. We may need to get hold of you in an emergency! Students can give this information to The Academy, via their mentors or parents, or contact the main office themselves to ensure we have the correct information. Your help with this important matter is greatly appreciated. It is now policy that all staff wear I.D. badges at all times. It is an expectation that parents/visitors always enter Yate International Academy via Reception. Parents/visitors will then be signed in and given a Visitor badge. Please do not be offended if you are asked to go to Reception and to sign in as a visitor – it is an important matter of safeguarding. You will then be met by the member of staff you came to visit or escorted to them through the building. We have innumerable points of entry at Yate International Academy and we are endeavouring to make the building as secure and SAFE, as we possibly can. The new build Academy will have only one point of entry and a secure line to safeguard your children.

ROCK CHALLENGE 2012...by Mrs Bell and Miss Greaves

As you may know, the Academy has experienced its most successful year ever with an excellent second place position in the Southern heats on Monday 16th April 2012. In addition to this, we won seven awards (again the highest number of awards we have ever received), including costume and the Spirit of Rock Challenge Award. As one of the top scoring second place schools we were put through into the Southern final which is due to be held on Thursday 7th June 2012, in Portsmouth. Both staff and students were delighted, and even slightly overwhelmed, at the result and a venture into uncharted territory saw staff meeting to decide how it could be made even better.

A few minor changes have been made and rehearsals are again underway to polish the performance even further. On Tuesday 15th May 2012 the students performed at Yate Leisure Centre to family and friends and the presentation of certificates and Rock Challenge pins were awarded. After this we continue to prepare for the Southern finals. We are completely overwhelmed with the amount of support from parents/carers travelling down to support us, both in the heats where I think we were the loudest crowd by far, and also by the 108 tickets already ordered to travel down for the final! We believe that the fantastic attitude of the students and the commitment they have shown have got us this far and we hope to put in our best ever performance in the finals. Sarah Friday, Year 13, also reports... In April, the annual dance-drama competition Rock Challenge returned to the Portsmouth Guildhall. This year’s competition featured nine Hampshire schools (and one South Gloucestershire!) playing characters such as a tiny Edward Scissorhands, an army of rats and Cinderella; the dances covered topics such as schizophrenia, Banksy’s graffiti and dances around the world and were set in locations such as a female prison, a circus and a courtroom.

Of course, the best performance of the night was Yate and Culverhill’s chess-inspired ‘Your Move’. Combining dance, gymnastics and parkour, the dance presented the characters of the chess pieces as they moved around the board. Using striking black and white costumes, the dance showed the monochrome of the chessboard. The judges praised the performance for its originality, striking costumes, clever choreography and its execution and control of each different section. After a close competition, Yate and Culverhill finished the heats in 2nd place, behind the dance set in a prison. Yet the team scored the highest 2nd place dance, and so have qualified for June’s Regional Finals! A feat never achieved by the Yate and Culverhill team before!

PE ROUND-UP Sport on the girls’ side has been quiet this term, due to the appalling weather and the Academy’s success in the Rock Challenge competition, meaning that many of our players were rehearsing at the end of the Academy day. However, there has been some indoor rounders training for Year 7s on Tuesdays and Years 7-10 on Thursdays run by Mrs May and Miss Greaves, with some help from a few of the Sixth Form students. We will be able to put our training into practice during our five matches, which start against Bradley Stoke at the end of May and continue throughout June playing Chipping Sodbury School, Brimsham Green School, Winterbourne International Academy and Castle School. We are particularly looking forward to seeing the Year 7s play with many of our successful netball teams from the winter playing rounders as well. There are also upcoming athletics fixtures, with the super 8s competition running for Years 7/8 and 9/10. We are also beginning to prepare athletes for the South Gloucestershire Athletics Championships on Wednesday 20th June 2012 at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex. We wish the girls luck in their upcoming fixtures and hope they achieve the same success that they did in the winter fixtures.

GYMNASTICS

And how can we talk about girls’ sport without mentioning the success of our Gymnasts in the recent World Championship Acrogymnastics competition held in Florida in April. Shanie-Redd Thorne (Year 11) and Danielle Jones (Year 8) competed in the 12-19 years girls’ pairs competition coming third and winning themselves a bronze medal. Jake Underdown (Year 9) also won a Bronze medal in the men’s 12-

19 pairs. This is a fantastic achievement, especially when you consider that they are young within their age category and the amount of extra training that they had to fit into an already packed training schedule, in addition to their Academy work!

...by Jasmine Upton, Milan Cacacie, Telilah Wears and Cian White

We have all enjoyed the experience and opportunities Gifted and Talented have offered us throughout the year. From exciting dance to extreme archery every Gifted and Talented class has increased our abilities in sport. The students that were chosen to be in Gifted and Talented were those that had proved to have good agility skills and a positive attitude to PE. Gifted and Talented has allowed us to take part in a variety of different and unusual activities that we may not have had an opportunity to experience before. For example, we have participated in Table Tennis, Athletics, Volley Ball, Archery and Fencing. This all advanced our learning and our technique in sport. Although we have great collaboration skills in Gifted and Talented we also work exceptionally well individually. To ensure we reached the height of our abilities the Gifted and Talented instructors have encouraged and assisted us, in order that we shine in what we are most talented at. Being in Gifted and Talented has been a great privilege as we have all learnt something new that we can use later on in life. From the activities we have taken part in so far you can tell that we have all made great progress. It has also brought us together as a team and we are proud to say that we were part of Gifted and Talented 2012 at Yate International Academy. THE PUZZLE

Richard and Autumn collect sea shells. Richard began a holiday with 561 shells and Autumn began with 21 shells. Each day of the holiday Richard found 25 shells and Autumn found 52 shells on the beach. By the end of the holidays they had the same number of shells in total. How long was the holiday?

UKMT JUNIOR MATHS CHALLENGE On Thursday 26th April 2012 the UK Maths Trust Junior Maths Challenge took place. Students from Years 7 and 8 were joined by nine students from two primary schools in the competition. For an hour these students flexed their mathematical muscles in the gym and answered some tough questions. Well done to everyone who took part! Year 8 Lewis Moore Gold Certificate, Best in Year and Best in School Callum Hunter Bronze Certificate Year 7 Molly Cocking Bronze Certificate and Best in Year Year 6 Marcus Miller Silver certificate and Best in Year Emily Fussell Bronze Certificate Tim Clayson Bronze Certificate Harry George Bronze Certificate

ROLLS ROYCE FANTASTIC CHALLENGE

Many Year 8 students have risen to the challenge of being ‘Product Design Engineers’ by enthusiastically taking part in this annual Rolls Royce competition. They are developing their teamwork skills, demonstrating their ability to problem-solve as well as building on the Skills Curriculum from Year 7. Working as a design team and using simple materials, the students had to construct and demonstrate a battery-powered cart that is

propelled by a fan. They have designed and built their carts following the specifications set and are now ready to race against each other. The winning team will then go onto the area final of each round where they will race against other schools as well as having to prepare a display explaining design and development work. This competition is providing students with the opportunity to use their learning from the Physics topics as well as a valuable insight into career opportunities.

News from the Guilds

Lion Guild

On Friday 4th May 2012 I spent most of period 5 applauding the achievements of the students in Years 7 and 8 at the lower Academy awards assembly. I was particularly pleased to note that the English awards went to two young Lions – Mollie Cocking in Year 7 and Lee Carter in Year 8. Ben Edwards won the Gifted and Talented award for Year 7 whilst Year 8 students Brandon Kear (Music) and Genna Bradbury (French) also made the walk to the front of the Hall. Guild awards went to Alice Osborne and Shannon Curtis for their charity work this year and Joe Shutt won the Year 7 Mentors award for L7KW. The main award for Lion Guild went to Alex Whiter of Year 8. Well done to all these and to all the winners in Years 7 and 8.

Attendance remains a very important keystone for success. Georgia Dewar, Bethany Nolder, Bade Pirinc, Millie Theobald, Corey Paul Aaron Charles and Kurtis Luke are our 100% attenders whilst Jamie Bateman, Shay Isaacs, Megan Wood, Leigh Blacxkbourn, Morgan Caldecoat, Jake Hunter, Curtis Slocombe and Cameron Gibbs all have at least 99%.

Lion Guild have yet again won the Guild points competition - this is now for the fourth term running and we are in a good position to win the overall trophy at the end of the year. Our top points scorers are: Year 7 – Chloe Simpson, Ellie Buet, James Heron and Maisie Pitman. Year 8 – Alex White, Jodie Brommage, Genna Bradbury, Nathan Reed and Callum Cooper. Year 9 – John Morgan, Holliew Bidwell, Megan Wood and Georgia Dewar. Year 10 – Chloe Cooper, Morgan Caldecoat, Sam Wilmot and Briany Webb. Year 11 – Blaine Skluse, Jack Heaven, Leanne Bryan, Chelsea Hastings and Codie Pomphrey. Congratulations especially to L7KW who are top of the mentor groups with over 5000 points! Term 6 and sports day are just around the corner - we are hopeful that Lion will have a repeat performance of last year and win the day.

Mr A Lord – Head of Lion Guild

Griffin Guild

With exams just around the corner, the Griffin is nervous but quietly confident that Academy students will come up trumps once again this year. Make sure that you are one of those that emerge from the hall on results day clutching a fistful of ‘C’ grades in your sweaty mitts, not drying your eyes on your Leavers’ Hoodie. The Griffin writes from a position of looking up at Lion and Pegasus in the Guild point league table. However, as Pep Guardiola said, ‘The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That's real glory. That's the essence of it’. This term the league table is incredibly close and a concerted effort can swing things our way. Big shout outs to Key Stage 3 Griffin mentor groups who have scored the most points out of all Griffin groups in the Guild league table: 7AH in second, KL in tenth position and AO in twelfth. Congratulations are also due to Jake Underdown who won a medal at the world gymnastics competition in Florida recently. He has shown great dedication and application to achieve this without it affecting his Academy work. Finally, I would like to congratulate certain Griffins in Year 8 who have done particularly well in their recent reports. Zak Pritchard, Jess Boden and Amy Johnson achieved or exceeded their target grade in seven subjects, a truly monumental achievement. Callum Lewis, Taylor Hibbs, Rosie Heaven and Ryan Williams also deserve a mention for achieving or surpassing their targets in six subjects.

Mr S Ponsford – Head of Griffin Guild

Pegasus Guild

Term 4 produced a wealth of fantastic achievements for the students in Pegasus. The awards ceremony held on Friday 4th May 2012 really highlighted just how successful the Pegasus students are. The winners of the awards were as follows: Year 7 awards are: Art – Milan Cacacie, Music - Jaydie Pomphrey, Dance - Milan Cacacie, Drama – Kieran Hack, SEN - Victoria Critchley, Citizenship - Jaydie Pomphrey, Mentor Award – Kieran Seymour Year 8 awards are: History - Chloe Morley, Geography – Katie Phillips, RE – Corey Whitmore, ICT – Lauren Baines, Art – Chloe Chapman, Dance – Jess Long, SEN – Corey Whitmore, Citizenship – Charlie Walker, Year Contribution – Sophie Banwell This is a great triumph and I hope you join me in congratulating these students for their persistent hard work and attainment at the Academy. The rest of the Guild must not be forgotten, the Guild as a whole has 86% of students on or above the national target for attendance and 12% of the guild have not missed a single session this academic year, this is outstanding and something of which to be very proud. Last term 50 budding ice skaters took to the ice at Bristol’s, soon to be closed, ice rink and represented the Academy! Every student tried their best on the ice (staff included!). In Term 6 a final reward trip is being planned by Mr Ponsford (Head of Griffin) and myself, details of this will follow early in Term 6. Year 11 will be embarking on their final exams in the coming weeks and I wish them well with their revision. With the preparations under way in lessons it is now time to consolidate their learning and set out revision timetables at home. This will boost their confidence and really ensure that no page is left unturned and as much knowledge and question answering skills are practiced. I hope you will join me in wishing all Year 11’s at the Academy good luck!

Mr S Matthews – Head of Pegasus Guild

Phoenix Guild

Phoenix students performed well in the recent Year 7 and Year 8 Awards. Congratulations to the following Year 7 and 8 Phoenix, Julia Rudzinska, Sarah Stafford, Kacy Brown James Westacott and Abbie Banwell, who took no less than four awards including the most coveted prize of all, the top prize from the Rotary Club. Well done to all! Year 8 recently received their reports and took part in a successful parents evening. The evening was notable for being our highest turnout ever. I hope that is a good sign for future achievement. For me personally it was a very pleasant evening as I was able to say so many positive things to so many parents. There are one or two who have achieved well academically; Sarah Taylor and Abi Leader had excellent reports and Ellie Bailey, Abbie Banwell, Jack Miles, Logan Garland, and Chloe Lumbard had very good reports. The following students have 100% attendance and deserve praise, they are, Liam Bailey, Abbie Banwell, Chloe Faithful, James Fisher, Macauley Foley, Sarah Iles, Laura Johnson, Reece Pearce, Amber Sharpe, Frank warren, and James Westacott. This Term we say goodbye and good luck to our intrepid Year 11s who complete their Key Stage 4 education very soon. Thank you for all your role modelling and we wish you luck and hope to see you return for your Key Stage 5 studies in the new build in September.
