We’re proud to feature, the local non-profit organization, Team Timmy as our ‘Cover Cause’ for this first edition of Northern Macomb County’s YesCommunitySavings magazine. Founded by Kristi Rycerz and Diane Larson, the organization makes and delivers care package “camouflage” tote bags to children newly diagnosed with cancer and their families at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. They chose this simple mission because it may be a small thing, but it’s vital to families who are coping with the hospital stays and treat-ments needed to help their children battle cancer. Bags are filled with items a family needs to remain comfortable in the hospital, including toiletries for parents and toys for the children.

“When you go into the hospital, you forget a lot of the necessity items,” Rycerz said. Also included in each bag is a fishing pole for the child. Fishing was Timmy Larson’s favorite pastime. Many local people know Kristi Rycerz as the owner of Just Like Home Childcare Center. She was Timmy’s aunt. She and Diane Larson, the mother of Timmy, co-founded the non-profit shortly after Timmy passed away after battling cancer for two years. He was just four years old. (Timmy Larson is the happy fisherman pictured on our cover.) Team Timmy began as an emotional outlet for both women while dealing with grieving the loss of their be-loved boy. Rycerz says that the mission has grown into something that now brings ongoing satisfaction to her, just knowing that other families are receiving help.

Recently, Kristi shared with me how a new “bald Barbie” is now available for purchase at ToysRUs. She thought this was a very important thing for small girls to receive in the bags. Shortly after posting a ‘Wish Request’ on the Team Timmy Facebook page , she was surprised to find over a hundred dolls arrive at her home! The sad news came from the Children’s Hospital social workers, who passed them out in just two months.
