Of This Place …experiments & findings in landscape~seascape~skyscape… Ever inspired by Nature, ‘Of This Place’ is a body of work that explores my relationship with the surrounding environment through a series of paintings, drawings & assemblage. The paintings are abstract representations of landscape, seascape & skyscape, which evolved out of movement meditations with paint on paper. Sourcing recycled domestic polymer paint & purposely limiting the palette, the paint is poured, the paper moved over some time & eventually let lie to allow the paint to present its own organic composition. The paper is then hand-cut into organic shapes resembling rock formations before being mounted onto recycled hand-cut board, lending a sculptural quality. The drawings, which combine graphite, gouache, charcoal & thread, are an exploration of seemingly ordinary natural objects that are re- contextualised in a way that pays tribute to their unusual simplicity & extra-ordinariness. The assemblages are comprised of salvaged bird & fish bone, stone & thread that have been collected over years of beach wanderings. These objects are glued to recycled hardwood sourced from building sites. With these materials I explore pattern, repetition & negative space with a sense of honour & respect for the fragility of Life. Whichever medium I choose to work in, my intention is to invite the viewer into a realm of reverence for the extraordinary within the ordinary. My hope is that this may initiate an enquiry into their own response to & relationship with the Natural world & their integral place within it. Yemaya Grace Maitri Wapengo, NSW Summer 2018

The artist would like to acknowledge the Land on which she was born, raised, has travelled & currently lives, is Sacred Aboriginal Land. She wishes to acknowledge the Traditional Elders of the Past, the Present & the Young People of today who are the Elders of tomorrow. She wishes to offer deep respect & gratitude to the Elders past, present & future, for the opportunity to live & create in Yuin Country.

Of This Place …experiments & findings in landscape~seascape~skyscape…

Ever inspired by Nature, ‘Of This Place’ is a body of work that explores my relationship with the surrounding environment through a series of paintings, drawings & assemblage.

The drawings, which combine graphite, gouache, charcoal & thread, are an exploration of seemingly ordinary natural objects that are re-contextualised in a way that pays tribute to their unusual simplicity & extra-ordinariness.
