KAI TIAN PÌ DÌ

In a traditional Chinese myth, the heaven and the earth were bound together like a huge egg. In this egg lived a giant called Pan Gu. Eighteen thousand years after the beginning of time, Pan Gu started to separate heaven from earth as though separating the white from the yolk. This task took him another 18,000 years, and after he had finished he died of exhaustion. This chengyu is now used to described something achieved with huge effort, or great progress being made in an important endeavor.

Pronounced: (kye tien pee dee)

Literal translation: open heaven break the earth

Meaning: advance by leaps and bounds, take giant strides, make a super-human effort

The Cat Stance allows you to attack and/or pounce very quickly. The lead leg supports very little weight making defensive kicks fast and unexpected. With the weight already drawn into the back leg a leaping attack becomes less detectable to the opponent.

To position the Cat Stance properly move one foot back and turn it outward. Move the other foot forward and in front with the heel lifted and the ball of the foot on the ground. Bend both legs. Remain upright and facing the forward. Hands should be at elbow Position or On Guard. It is important to maintain an 85/15 rear to front weight distribution.

HAND STRIKES

SHUTO

Open your hand, fully extend your fingers, keeping them together and your thumb bent touching the side of the hand. Tighten your hand and bring it to the ear, palm facing out. Bring the hand forward in a circular motion striking the neck with the with the edge.

ROUNDHOUSE ELBOW

From elbow position, circle your elbow around striking with the front of the forearm. End with your fist towards the middle of your sternum. This strike is executed to the jaw or head.

RISING ELBOW

From elbow position, lift your elbow straight up keeping your fist close to your body in a vertical position, striking with the front of the forearm. End with your fist next to your ear. Make sure that you rotate your torso so that the elbow will hit the opponent’s centerline. This strike is executed to the chin.

CROSS-HAND HAMMER

Bring your fist to the opposite ear, palm facing down. Extend your arm striking with the bottom part of the fist to the temple or mandible (lower jaw).

CHICKEN WRIST

Bend your wrist as far down as it will go (at least 90 degrees), letting the fingers hang naturally and loose. You strike your opponent’s temple or jaw with the end of the wrist bone with a rising motion, using your forearm to thrust with power.

KICKS

SIDE BLADE KICK

Bring your striking leg up to a Flamingo. Extend your leg to the side, striking with outside the mid to rear edge of the foot. Rechamber to a Flamingo and set back down to a Horse Stance. This is useful against: the knee, stomach, solar plexus, and ribs.

BACK KICK

Bring your striking leg up to a Flamingo. Look over your shoulder (if kicking with the right, look over the right shoulder) making sure not to turn the shoulders or lean forward. Extend your leg straight back, brushing the knees together, striking with the heel. Rechamber to a Flamingo and set back down to a Horse Stance. This is a very powerful kick that targets the solar plexus, groin or ribs.

ROUNDHOUSE KNEE

Both hands reach forward and grab the opponent by the head, shoulders or back. Bring your striking leg up and around as your pull the opponent down into your knee. Set back down to a Horse Stance. A Roundhouse Knee is effective for striking the ribs, sternum, or head.
