2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Meaningful CareLes Edwards of Groton knows just how meaningful Cottage Hospital is. Born in the “old Cottage Hospital” in 1932, this tough Vermonter found himself in a near death experience and being rushed back to where it all began. While cutting wood for the pending winter season his chainsaw jumped back cutting him from his neck down through his chest, in-cluding a major artery and three ribs. Woodsville EMS acted swiftly getting him to Cottage Hospital where ED staff jumped into action, calling on surgeons and our on-site blood bank. At Cottage Hospital, we understand that today’s healthcare options can be overwhelming. With every experience, we are passionate about giving every patient and family member a feeling of trust and satisfaction in our care.

Cottage Hospital’s leadership team continues to define a clear strategy to our future, while our clinical staff focuses on providing the best medical care possible. Our Rural Health Clinic, Cottage Hospital Internal Medicine, in an effort to meet the needs of the community, has expanded its services to include same day appointments and extended hours.

Cottage Hospital was pleased to be recognized for the HealthStrong Award for Excellence in Efficiency, receiving a top quarter performance

rate among all acute care hospitals in the nation. Being an industry leader in efficiency allows us to also be a low cost leader in healthcare. We were recently chosen by Harvard Pilgrim as a preferred site of service for our low costs and high quality.

Webster’s dictionary defines “meaningful” as having a clear meaning, expressing an emotion or idea without words and having real importance or value. For us at Cottage Hospital each part of this definition defines how we do our job to provide meaningful care to you.

We hope that your experience with us has been meaningful and that we can continue to serve you for the next 110 years.

In 2013, the Cottage Hospital Auxiliary continued to support the hospital through fund-raising activities that included the annual golf tournament, bake sale, and memory tree. Funds were used to provide equipment and furniture and for beautification projects on the campus. In addition, the Auxiliary conducted a needs assessment for Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices in public buildings locally and purchased one for the office area in the basement of the hospital. Also, a major effort to support the provision of emer-gency medical services was undertaken. Specifically, after consultation with local EMS units, the Auxiliary procured and distributed Personal Medical Record (PMR) forms and magnetic display cases to individuals through local senior centers and physicians’ offices. As a result, more than 2000 PMRs were put into circulation in the hospital’s service area.
