Last year we presented you the first IDSA Yearbook, that for sure was amilestone in our lives, and now that we have arrived to the end of this year, andyou’re reading the next edition of it, we are proud to say that we have takenthe next step that makes this initiative a tradition. Weeks, months of endless work, learning, practicing and creating are behind usand are collected in the following pages. You may not even remember howmany things we have done this year together, how much we’ve grown and howthe association has improved with innovations and new initiatives. Turning 5 thisyear gave us the opportunity to reflect a bit on our past, to see where it allstarted and to see how far we have come during these 5 years. 5 years of hard work and passion lead us to this year that was filled withmemories, what couldn’t have been possible without You and your enthusiasmand willingness to act and improve. You have all been part of this journey thatbrought us here, and You are the ones who will shape the future. Looking backthrough, this year we have no doubt that IDSA is in the best hands possible.

IDSA'S 5TH BIRTHDAYMilestones

This year marked a very special occasion, since exactly 5 years have passed since thefoundation of IDSA. During these 5 years so many things happened in the life of the association, that it’simpossible to even collect them all. It has grown its membership immensely, it went throughserious developments and improvements regarding its organisational structure,professional programs, Munapest etc. If you flip through these pages you can see the widescale of activities IDSA can provide, the neverending opportunities of learning andexpressing yourself while still belonging to an ever-growing, loving family.

Of course, there is no birthday without a proper celebration, so on 17th November we cametogether to take a look at this 5-year-long journey behind us, and to introduce our newest membersthe roots and first steps of the IDSA history. During this Saturday many of the founding fathersand mothers, former presidents, Secretary-Generals and Conference Managers of Munapestgathered their thoughts and shared with us their interesting and engaging stories on how a simpleidea become reality, how Munapest was born and how IDSA can actually prepare you for life.

SummerIDSA GOES TO SZIGET

During the summer of 2018, for the first timeever we had the amazing opportunity torepresent IDSA at the NGO Island of SzigetFestival, Hungary’s biggest and most popularmusic festival. We spent the week working hard on promotingthe association while also having fun, andsharing this fun part with the visitors as wellwith different games, like UN quizzes, and bycreating our own IDSA version of the popularboard game “Risk”, that resulted very popularfor all ages. Luckily we also had meaningfulconversations about current issues, the UN, theSustainable Development Goals and of course,about the work of IDSA, Munapest and MUN ingeneral.

While some people heard from us for the firsttime about the concept of MUN, we also metmany MUN veterans who had been attendingforeign conferences for years. Sziget also gaveus the chance to appear on the radio as wellwithin the frames of an interview by CampusRadio, so even those who weren’t present at thefestival could learn about our work. As takeaways we even offered small gifts in the form of IDSA bracelets, handkerchiefs, andtattoos of IDSA, Munapest and SDGs. Eventhough this week was extremely tiring, in spite ofthe long, hot hours and sudden rains and sandstorms we had a lot of fun and enjoyed everymoment of it.

EVENTS ORGANISED THIS YEARPublic Events

The first event of the year was organised incooperation with the UN Youth Delegate ofHungary for those who are interested in thework of the United Nations and its relevance toour everyday life, or even consider a career inthe UN. During the event the participants couldget a deeper insight into how UN Agenciesseated in Hungary work, and hear about thecareer opportunities these organisations canoffer for young people. We tried to bring the topic closer to theattendants and make it even more personal, sowe organised small group conversations wherethey had the chance to talk to therepresentatives of FAO, IOM, UNICEF,UNHCR, United Nations Association ofHungary and the UN Youth DelegateProgramme of Hungary.

The autumn semester’s second public eventfocused on peacekeeping, past and ongoingpeacekeeping missions and life as a peacekeeper,with the presentations from General László Drótand General Gábor Boldizsár. The event, that was also organised to rememberthe 70th Anniversary of the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights, was a hugesuccess, with almost filling up an entire lecturehall at Corvinus’s “Sóház” building.

On 19th March a roundtable discussion was held with the collaboration of IDSA, the DanubeInstitute and the PaIR Club of the International Business School. The topic was a recent hot one, thecurrent Brexit situation. What the possible outcomes are, how the negotiations are going and incase of an actual exit, what the relationship of the EU and UK would look like – these were themain issues waiting to be discussed. No surprise that the venue was filled with curious, knowledge-seeking youngsters who wanted todive deep into the topic. The three presenters of the event were prepared and grabbed quickly theattention of the audience. Namely, they were Caitlin Jones (Deputy Head of Mission at the UKEmbassy to Hungary), John O’Sullivan (President of Danube Institute, former speechwriter ofTheresa May) and Zoltán Gálik (Associate Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest,International Studies Department). All of their remarks and observations really complemented eachother. Without doubt we had a great, highly interesting and informative night again thanks to theassociations and the guest presenters.

BREXIT - WHERE TO GO FROM HERE?

In December, we also participated in the GlobalMigration Film Festival by organizing a screeningof the movie “On the Same Boat”, in collaborationwith IOM Budapest, AIESEC and UNIS Vienna.After the screening, we held a panel discussionwith experts of migration and social sciences,where they discussed the movie and its broadertopic, the refugee crisis of the previous years.

WOMEN'S DAY AT IDSAInternalEvents

What could be a better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than bringing togethersome of the most successful female members, who contributed greatly to the life of IDSA?Well, that is exactly what we did on 6th March in the late afternoon. The majority of the attendants were women, however, a couple of minutes before starting theevent, a few men finally turned up. The invited ladies were really different on a personality-level, though they all had one thing in common: they did an outstanding job in one way oranother in IDSA in the past few years. All of them got the same questions and they all gaveanswers to them one by one. These questions focused mainly on their most valuableexperiences, remarkable achievements, unforgettable memories, hardest struggles and whatthey were the proudest of. I believe, those who were able to attend this event left with positive vibes thanks to thesegorgeous ladies and their inspiring stories.

VISIT TO THE TURKISH AMBASSY

As a result of the hard work of our fellowmember, Alparslan Abdikoglu a joint delegationof IDSA Budapest and Szeged was invited bythe Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey on 29March to give us a lecture on the Hungarian-Turkish diplomatic relations among several othermatters.

JOINT EVENT WITH IDSA SZEGED

The event was held in the fascinating building of the Turkish Embassy, where we could learn aboutTurkey’s current position in the international community, Turkey’s relationship with other states andinternational organisations. The Ambassador spoke about the accession of Turkey to the EuropeanUnion and the issues they are facing. He also emphasized how Turkey helps other nations andcauses and highlighted the role of Turkey in handling the European migrant crisis. To prove that Turkey is one of the most colourful countries in the world, we were shown videosabout tourist destinations, attractions and Turkish specialties. Fortunately, we could try the latterat the Turkish Culture Institution after having a great Q&A session with the Ambassador!

GETTING PROFESSIONALInternal Courses

In the first semester, our journey through ModelUN started off with a long period of training,involving three courses designed to guide ournewest members through all aspects of the system.These newbies then had the chance to participatein three MUN Clubs with topics ranging from theCrimean conflict to the ongoing refugee crisis.Attendees took part in fruitful debates and despitethe general lack of time resulting from the 90minute long sessions, have managed to pass tworesolutions. We kicked off the spring semester, with a shorterbut more intensive MUN Training, that favoredpractical knowledge over theoretical, and movedon to hold four MUN Clubs in a much shorterperiod. Throughout most of the semester, the topiccovered different aspects of the conflict in theKashmir region, which we debated in both UNCommittees and in a Commonwealth Heads ofGovernment meeting. Similar to real life, a solutionhas not been found, yet the topic seemed to growever more complex.

MUN CLUBS DEBATE CLUBS

As a new addition to the professional courses ofour association, debate clubs served a dualpurpose. First, to give members a platform toelegantly discuss issues not fitting for the ModelUN system, and second, to teach our membershow to build arguments in a competitiveenvironment. A small, but dedicated core of attendees weresplit into teams of three, to debate the deathpenalty, euthanasia and the legal protection ofhate speech. Both a great social and professionalactivity, debating is sure to continue being a partof IDSA as long as there is demand for it.

Discussion on the Nature and History of WMDs

At this IDSA course participants could haveexplored the greatest weapons humanity hasever created. Participants were faced with thegreatest arguments for launching a nuclearholocaust given by famed statesmen, scientistsand military officers and as a response, theyhad to make counterarguments.

IN A FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

On 2nd October Luca Szarka and Julcsi Ármás(Vice President for Professional Affairs of theAdvanced College for Security Policy) gave us adeep introduction into security policy andinternational relations. Among the Three-LevelSecurity, the Macro-Securitization, the WoT (Waron Terrorism) and Regional Security thepresentation was aiming to introduce Buzan’s fivesecurity sectors which we can have analysed aconflict and a state upon. In the first part of thepresentation we could have got to know the 5+1(Political, Military, Economic, Societal,Environmental + Cyber) sectors and theirconnections related to security, while the secondpart we got introduced to the study of the GazaStrip in accordance with these sectors.

SECURITY ACCORDING TO BUZAN PHOTOSHOP & ILLUSTRATOR TRAINING

One of the most creative programs of Novemberwas obviously the Photoshop training held byVivien Aranyi-Aszalós and Bence Volosinovszki.Those who were not into creating graphics orediting pictures before, it’s pretty sure that theylearned a lot that day. Those who showed up gota brilliant introduction into the most importantfunctions and techniques of Adobe Photoshopand Adobe Illustrator.

MUNAPEST PREPARATORY

With Sarina Venus Memari & Gábor Rácz"Participating in the Munapest Preparatory wasa real turning point for me because that was theday when I realised how close my first Munapestconference is. Venus and Gabs were somotivating! They made me believe that I canbecome a perfect delegate and that Munapestis going to be fun. I hope you all know theboardgame 'Risk'. This was one of my favouritesgames as a child and during the Preparatory, Iconstantly felt that Munapest must besomething like that." - Dominik Rákos

The 5+1 Sectors of Security

On 8th November we had the chance toparticipate in a very informative event held byNikolett Garai (former president of IDSA andresearcher at the Institute for Foreign Affairsand Trade). Those who showed up could learnabout online applications designed for helping towrite a thesis or an academic paper, also abouthow to make a research plan or how to collectdata with open source intelligence.

LEARNING WHILE HAVING FUNInternal Courses

During this two-part course, held by our own HRexperts, Márton Hegedűs and Anna Nagy, wecould get an insight and learn about what HRdepartments look for in future candidates. Theyhelped us acquire some skills which would help usgetting our dream job in the future, we could takeour CV writing to the next level, and could evenpractice to answer some typical questions that wecan encounter with during a job interview.

HOW TO GET A JOB VENEZUELA

One of the exceptional courses, which wasn’t heldby our own members but an invited guestspeaker, was the ‘Venezuela Course’, about acountry where the international community isdivided, with years of ongoing political andeconomical crisis. What is Russia doing in South America? How isChina one of the biggest investors there? Whatare their economic interests in a Latin Americancountry? What is the US planning to do about it? Dr. Mónika Szente-Varga, currently the Vice-Deanfor Education at National University of PublicService, Faculty of International and EuropeanStudies held us an engaging lecture where sheanswered the above-mentioned questions andgave us a deeper insight into the situation of thecountry.

The past year offered a huge variety of social activities: not only have webeen together at Sziget Festival, four camps, enjoyed the traditional quiznights and pub crawls but tried out new initiatives: we celebrated IDSA’s fifthbirthday together in November for example. Furthermore, in the Spring semester we had a movie night, a board gamingnight, we had a hiking in the Danube Bend, spent a wonderful afternoon onthe Margaret Island, showed each other our bowling talents and we evenpainted tiles (for Munapest awards). For sure we will not rest in the summer:picnics on islands and bridges, and prepare for the festival season.

BRNO MUNIMUNConferences

Brno miniMUN was my first international MUNexperience that has prepared me greatly forMunapest. During our four days in Brno, we got toexperience the structure of Model UNconferences: the purpose of moderated andunmoderated caucuses and so on. I have done itearlier during MUN clubs in Budapest with mybeloved IDSA members, but it was a completelydifferent experience in the unfamiliarenvironment with a bunch of strangers comingfrom all around Europe for the conference. We also had an opportunity to walk around thisMoravian city, climb up the Spilberk castle andshop around a little bit. In my humble opinion,the beauty of MUNs is in its intensity: it is veryhard to find the balance between partying,socializing and performing well in your Chamber.But once the conference is over, midterms andfinals do not seem to be that scary.

KATOWICE, POLAND

On November 29, 2018, we arrived in Katowice,Poland. Three fun days were waiting for theHungarian team. During the three days, we were ableto attend various workshops and lectures held byboth professionals in their fields and amateurs, aswell as politicians. We talked about climate change and the easing of itsunstoppable process. From America to Asia,enthusiastic students came from all continents, youngpeople presented their projects about the currentenvironmental pollution that is affecting their country.This was useful because we got a complex picture ofclimate change. My favourite workshop was "Consciousness andclimate change", where we had the opportunity todiscuss the steps we need to take for a better future,and that we need to change our habits, because oneperson is enough to make radical changes. In thislecture, we were talking about the importance of therelationship of nature and humans, and of course,that we couldn't live without our precious nature thatgives us so much, yet expects only care, nurturing inreturn. I also liked the opportunity to meditate at theconference and reflect and ask ourselves what can wedo individually to stop further destruction of theenvironment

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

In late April, we held the fifth edition of Munapest. Just like every year, it was an effort bythe whole IDSA membership on many levels - from organizers, to our fellow members whovoluntarily spread the word of our conference, and lastly but certainly not least, by thosemembers of ours who participated as delegates, chairs or directors. Just like every year,our members didn’t cease to amaze their fellow delegates and their presidencies, earningone Best Delegate and five Honorable Mention titles. Furthermore, we should also mention those almost forty members, who worked hard, mostof them day and night, for in cases seven-eight months to make this conference a reality.Munapest 2019 was, in many regards, a bold step forward, reforming many elements ofthe organizing process, which called for a most focused and professional team. Theorganizers embarked on this trip being eager to try themselves out in one of the fields ofthe Organising Team, and they arguably did an incredible job, while they hopefullyacquired some professional skills in the process.

Munapest 2019 had everything that makes Munapest stand out among other MUNsinternationally. From most professional debates to the glamorous socials, it managedto give the participants an all-encompassing unmistakable ‘Munapest-feeling’. Therewere amazing performances at the Multicultural Night, uplifting moments at theopening and closing ceremonies, and a piano which kept playing even when thepianist went out for a cigarette at the Committee Dinner. All in all, Munapest 2019was an event hopefully every IDSA member can be proud of, and we can’t wait whatMunapest 2020 holds after this.

From the 26th to the 28th of October, we held our annual Autumn Camp, this time at Velence.As we were just days from Halloween, the topic of the camp was “The Contest of Monstrosities”,with each team representing a “monstrosity”. This was the first camp of the new intake, butbeing held before the mentor-mentee allocation, it was a great opportunity for the newbies toget to know some of the old members in order to choose their future mentor. All in all, the Autumn Camp had everything that makes a true IDSA camp: fun teambuildingactivities, awkward, embarrassing dance performances, and indispensable white undershirts. Butbeyond all: it was a great opportunity for the newbies to become part of the IDSA family.

On the first weekend of May, members of both IDSA Budapest and Szeged came together forthe annual spring camp to hang out and strengthen the two groups’ bonds in Örkény. Duringthese three days, the members were divided into six groups based on Hogwarts Houses and hadto do various activities together. On the first night, members followed their group leadersaround all the different Houses’ stations where they participated in different games rangingfrom concentration games to guessing games and everything in between. The next day members played different drinking games and other outdoor activities such astraditional IDSA games and even Martial Arts training. The final night consisted of all theteams having to perform a dance as well as create an origin story of how their houses came tobe. After all the creative and Oscar-winning performances, members partied together tofamous hits while dancing their hearts out. This camp was marked by the creation of newfriendships and chilling out between old members and new ones.

Hey IDSA, Kornél here!I want to tell you a story of inspiration, courage, fightingspirit, intellect, important lessons and long-lastingmemories. I still remember the ball swinging from the topof my head, but let’s not jump into this like that. I want togive you some sort of exposition, some sort of explanation,how I got into that glorious situation. It all started with „JÉG” - as ice. Spoiler alert, the sword ofEddard Stark in the Game of Thrones series is called Ice.The sword is used primarily as an executioner's blade, butin the end its own wielder dies from it. Much like ourdignity. But don’t pity us, we enjoyed every minute of thisamazing afternoon – night. What I have to saybeforehand is, that we want to thank our most honourableinstructor from JÉG. Without his guidance andprofessional comments – like “get in line”, or “help yourselfand God will help you too” – I have no idea where I wouldbe in my life. He really was an inspiration. The first task was to perform our student associations’anthem, recite a phrase, sing a song or dance somethingwe can all relate to. So our glorious Secretary-General ofMunapest 2019 led us to glory, by calling upon the IDSAspirit and failing miserably to remember two Hungariansentences. It turned out he was not joking. But in the endours was the least cringy production, and one team evencopied one of our abandoned ideas. So like, no big deal.After that we had to write a poem. That was actuallygood, so no remarks on that. At least we are funny. Itnaturally comes with intellect, but that curse-word shallnot be said upon our „enemies”. What came next was thebest thing I could have ever imagined, breaking a 19-year-old girl’s ankle, I mean popping something on a 19-year-old girl or boy. Wait that sounds weird right? But thanksto the amazing minds at JÉG that became a reality. If youwon’t believe me try it next year! I loved it and all othermembers of the suicide squad would say the same.

I wouldn’t really talk about our successful accomplishments,I mean there were many, like me drawing a retarded 7-headed-dragon on some video game instructions, or Petitalking like a wonderful mermaid, only that in the HarryPotter series they had a beautiful voice under water, andour replica had the only super power of spitting water onyour face while laughing. These were still our two greatsuccess stories. Less successful was the paper plane competition, where werelied upon the expertise of our greatest photographer. AsMáté learned in kindergarden, or from one of the Wrightbrothers, he created a paper plane that did not flew in theopposite direction when thrown forward. This was enoughfor a 4th spot. Talking about the competition. Now comes what you camefor. The great story of the swinging balls on balding heads.Or not balding heads but old, ashamed and out of placeIDSA heads in general. I think your Secretary-General stilldreams with those stockings, rubbing gently on hisforehead. I was yelled at by our great guide and spiritualleader, but I think he misunderstood my willingness tomake a fool out of myself as enthusiasm. Still, we cameclose to winning this round. We had a Kahoot exercise,where our Secretary-General, PR Vice President and yourPGA excelled, until the questions became related to reallife and gossip stuff. The short lived success was a mirageagain, as always. As we are evolving into a serious and well respectedstudent organisation, we have to take part in theseOlympic-like events. Our strength is clearly publichumiliation, we should rely on that. The last place wereached awarded us with a 1000 HUF beauty coupon, so itwas totally worth it.
