Key Competencies

Boys!!!

• There is no ‘magic dust’ at Gordon’s

• Those students who achieve great grades:

- work very hard

- are resilient

- have 100% attendance

- do the ‘simple things well’

- make sacrifices

- spend the right amount of time on prep.

Student

• Some ‘case studies’

- University places and GCSE results

- Sacrificing part time work

- Sacrificing a hobby

- Attend prep, for 90 minutes, every night

• Gordon’s is full of healthy distractions but, given we deliver such an academic Curriculum and students are assessed

predominantly at the end of Year 11, at some point they do become just that.

Student

Literacy • A life skill eg Oracy • Too often a limiting factor of student achievement • Insist on 30 minutes private reading on most days • Listen to the student reading for 10 minutes per day • Challenge the student to write about something they are

passionate about & give them feedback (mark it) • Spelling Tests. Use a dictionary to mark it.

Home

Home

• Check exercise books for quality of work and marking.

• Regularly discuss school and specific subjects.

• Ensure students spend 45 minutes/subject/night on prep.

• Reward/ sanction consistently and regularly (accountability)

• Discuss Sixth Form entrance criteria

• Think ahead to GCSES/ career aspirations including University and/ or employment. www.ucas.co.uk

Summary

Some final suggestions

• Students must have a good work ethic – grade 3s should be addressed

• Make them accountable for the effort profile in their report

• Make them stay for prep

• Make them stay 90 minutes for prep and read if necessary

• Make them read at home
