Srinagar: Anguished over the remarks and actions of the for-mer Chairman of Shia Wakf Board from Uttar Pradesh, Waseem Rizvi, the Muslims from different parts of Kash-mir on Saturday staged a pro-test to demand strict action against him.

Pertinently, Rizvi has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court of India, seeking deletion of 26 verses of the Muslim holy book, Qur’an, who he alleged incites terrorism and promote violence among Muslims.

A religious body, Reh-matan-lil-Alameen Founda-tion, staged a protest against the Shia leader’s controver-sial remarks against the holy book of Muslims.

Members of religious bod-ies holding placards reading “hang evil Rizvi, dismiss pe-tition” assembled at Press Enclave to lodge their protest against Rizvi’s move to chal-

lenge the authenticity of the holy book of Muslims. They were also chanting slogans against the former UP Shia Wakf Board Chairman.

“We have assembled here to register our protest against accursed (Maloon) Rizvi, who wounded the religious senti-ments of billions of Muslims across the world. We want the government to act tough against such radical elements,

who always stoke controversy through his blasphemy acts,” they said.

They appealed to the Su-preme Court of India to dismiss the plea seeking amendments in the holy Quran whose au-thenticity, they said, has never been challenged since the past 1400 years.

Srinagar: One-way traffic was resumed on Saturday after remaining suspended for weekly Friday mainte-nance on the 270-km-long Sri-nagar-Jammu national high-way, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.

We resumed one-way Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic from Nagrota to Srinagar at 1045 hrs, a traffic police offi-cial told UNI here today.

He said traffic could not be resumed earlier because of landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain yes-terday when the highway was closed for weekly Friday maintenance.

Last night the traffic de-partment had announced that in view of inclement weather prediction issued by the MeT department for a few days there is possibility of land and mudslides and shooting stones on the highway. How-ever, in case of improvement in the weather during the night, a decision to allow traf-fic will be taken on Saturday morning after assessing the road condition.

Traffic police officials said there was some improvement

in the weather and landslides triggered by rain on Friday in Ramban area were cleared and one-way traffic resumed today. Only LMVs from Nagrota were allowed to move towards Srinagar, he said.

After traffic was being dis-rupted frequently due to land-slides and shooting stones, the Union Territory (UT) ad-ministration decided to allow National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to under-take necessary maintenance and repair work of the road so that the road is through during other days. However, the locals between Banihal and Ramsu alleged that since NHAI started work to convert the road into four-lane, inci-dents of landslides and shoot-ing has witnessed increase.

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir police Chief, Dil-bagh Singh on Saturday said sticky-bombs are a challenge for the police but huge amount of recoveries have been made and more re-coveries of such bombs are on cards.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a sports event, Director General of Police (DGP) as per a local news gathering agency stated that the security forces are keep-ing a watch on the militancy activities and many attempts to target forces have been foiled.

Srinagar: The government has decided that the employees of the School Education Depart-ment retiring in coming two years shall not be transferred.

The comments were made by the officials in a meeting re-garding the mass transfers of teaching officials currently go-ing in the department in all ten districts of Kashmir valley.

According to a local news gathering agency, the Admin-istrative Secretary to the Gov-ernment for School Education

Department, B K Singh said this in a meeting held earlier in last week of February.

Singh said, “The employee having only two years remain-ing for retirement should not be disturbed.”

He also urged the concerned officials of the department that the applicants who have a ma-ture stay of more than seven years or more be considered in the first instance and the em-ployees having stay of more than four years should be con-sidered later on.

In the meeting Singh also said,

“In case of a demand for transfer on grounds of disability, spouse, extreme serious health condi-tions, security grounds, posting in hard or very hard zones and marriage grounds, such cases should be examined based on facts and necessary certificates issued by designated competent authority and subject to avail-ability of equivalent cadre va-cancies in institution identified by the applicant.”

Muslims also took to the social networking sites and expressed their anger against Rizvi.

Pertinently, Rizvi has moved to Supreme Court seeking deletion of 26 verses from the holy Quran on the pretext that “these verses teach hatred, violence and terror-ism.”

Patron of Darul Uloom Rahimi-ya Bandipora Moulana Rehmat-ullah Qasimi said: “There is no scope of any discussion on the

issue as things are quite clear. When he himself has stated in qu-ran that he will protect the holy book, what else is needed. None can change anything (in Quran) as Allah himself is its protector.”

Kashmir’s religious scholars have, however, appealed to main-tain calm, control their emotions, and not to resort to any sort of violence. Widespread condem-nations continue to pour in from different religious organizations of Kashmir. (KNO)

Amarnath...the Yatra 2021, the Board, keep-

ing in view the foremost concern of the safety and security of the pilgrims, decided that a 56-days Yatra would commence on 28th June, 2021, on auspicious day of Ashaad Chaturthi as per Hindu Calendar, and conclude on Shra-van Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) on 22nd August, 2021.

The Board was also informed that this year’s Yatra will be held as per COVID-19 SOPs developed by the government. Advance registration of pilgrims will commence from 1st April 2021 through 446 designated branches of Punjab National Bank, Jam-mu and Kashmir Bank and YES Bank, located in 37 States and UTs.

The Board will also enable the live telecast of morning and eve-ning Aarti for devotees across the globe. The live telecast is a tool for virtual Darshan for those who are unable to undertake the arduous Yatra. Further, the pil-grims can download the “Shri Amarnathji Yatra” App avail-able on the Google play store to get real time information about the Yatra and for availing several services online.

Today’s meeting saw some ma-jor decisions taken to facilitate the pilgrims and other stakehold-ers for the smooth conduct of the Yatra. The Board deliberated at length on the number of Yatris who would be allowed to regis-ter, date-wise and route-wise, for this year’s Yatra. Considering the carrying capacity of the ex-isting tracks and other available infrastructure in the Yatra area, the Board decided to enhance the daily route-wise Yatri ceiling from 7500/Day/Route to 10,000/Day/Route, excluding Yatris who would travel by helicop-ters, would be allowed to secure Advance Registration for the pil-grimage.

The Lt Governor also directed for issuance of Special invita-tions to Akhada Parishads, Acha-rya Parishads and exploring pos-sibility of establishing counters at prominent religious places across the country for facilita-tion of Sadhu/Sant Samaj.

Laying special emphasis on

providing best-in-class health-care facilities to all the visiting devotees and service providers, the Lt Governor directed the concerned officers to upgrade the present healthcare facilities on both yatra routes with latest equipment and augment strength of the medical staff to handle emergency cases.

On strengthening the com-munication channel, the Lt Gov-ernor directed for making the telecom services operational two weeks prior to the commencing of yatra at the Holy Cave and across the yatra routes.

It was further directed to upgrade the sanitation capaci-ty commensurate with the en-hanced yatra volume for base camp and along the routes.

During the meeting, SASB ap-proved the enhancement of re-munerations for Pujaris from ex-isting Rs 1000 per day to Rs 1500 per day for the next three years.

Further, as directed by the Lt Governor in the January 5, 2021 preparatory meeting, the Group accidental insurance cover for Yatris, Service Providers was also enhanced from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh and for Ponies from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000.

Discussion was also held on introducing RFID Tracking and Prepaid hiring of Services for putting in place for strengthened online digital system.

The Board further directed for wide publicity to be given through the electronic and print media, informing the intending Yatris to timely secure the pre-scribed Compulsory Health Cer-tificates issued by the Doctors/ Hospitals nominated by the State or UTs in which they reside and only thereafter proceed to seek Advance Registration from the nearest located designated Bank which would issue the pilgrim a Yatra Permit which shall be valid for the specified date and route.

The Board also advised the CEO to appeal to all the potential pilgrims to consult their doctors before embarking on the pilgrim-age. The CEO shall also widely publicize that no person below the age of 13 years and above the age of 75 years shall be permitted to undertake the pilgrimage.

Appreciating the important services rendered by the Lan-gar Organizations, the Board looked to their continued support during Yatra 2021.

As in the past, the awareness campaign would be launched with the cooperation and support of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and all infor-mation relating to Yatra will be placed on the Board’s Website (www.Shriamarnathjishrine.com).

Board about the other initiatives being taken by the Board for fa-cilitating the Yatris including introduction of free of cost Bat-tery Car service for the first time for 2.75 kms long Baltal to Domel stretch and vice versa. Further, the Board is issuing silver coins of 5 gm and 10 gm denomination through the Metal and Mineral Trading Corporation (MMTC). These coins would be sold to the pilgrims at the Holy Cave and at the offices of the Shrine Board during the Yatra.

Stand Sopore in which two police personnel namely Mohammad Afzal and Azad Ahmad received minor injuries, police said, add-ing that both the injured officials have been evacuated to a nearby hospital for the treatment of their injuries.

“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sec-tions of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circum-stances of this incident. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on,” the statement added. (With inputs from UNI)

One-way...for hours has become a daily

routine.Meanwhile, the national high-

way, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir valley remained closed since January Ist, 2021 due to ac-cumulation of snow. However, Beacon had cleared the snow and declared the highway open on February 28 only to suspend traf-fic again after a few hours due to fresh snowfall and avalanches. There was fresh snowfall on the highway, particularly between Sonamarg, Zojila pass and Meen-marg during the past 48 hours.

There was fresh snowfall on the historic 86-km-long Mughal road which remained closed for any traffic or pedestrian move-ment since December last year. There are many avalanche prone areas on the road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region.

SRINAGAR: Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Saturday condemned Waseem Rizvi's move to approach Supreme Court with an abhorrable petition challeng-ing Quranic scripture and demanded stern action against him under law.

In a statement issued here, Bukhari said the holy Quran is a word of God that can not be challenged before any court of law or at any forum in this world.

He said that persons like Waseem Rizvi are forces inimical to peace and communal harmony in the world and they should be dealt with sternly under law.

“The Apex Court should not admit this petition but instead should take strong cognizance of his blasphemous and sacrile-gious act which has hurt the sentiments of Muslims across the globe," Bukhari demanded.

He said that government should book Waseem under elev-enth provisions of law and put him to trial for his sacrilegious remarks.

JAMMU: The Government on Saturday informed that 99 new positive cases of novel Corona virus (COVID-19), 24from Jammu division and 75 from Kashmir division, have been reported today, thus taking the total number of positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 127535.Also 03 COVID-19 deaths have been reported, 01 from Jammu Division and 02 from Kash-

mir Division.Moreover, 102 more COVID-19 patients

have recovered and discharged from var-ious hospitals including 11 from Jammu Division and 91 from Kashmir Division.

According to the daily Media Bulletin on novel Corona virus (Covid-19), out of 127535 positive cases, 881 are Active Posi-tive, 124680 have recovered and 1974 have died; 730 in Jammu division and 1244 in Kashmir division.

The Bulletin further said that out of 5534502test results available, 5406967 sam-ples have been tested as negative till 13th-March, 2021.

Till date 1384247 persons have been enlisted for observation which included 29369 persons in home quarantine includ-ing facilities operated by government, 881 in isolation and 116381 in home surveil-lance. Besides, 1235642 persons have com-pleted their surveillance period.

KARNAH: Rich tributes poured in on Saturday for former MLC AR Badana on his first death anniversary, with remembering her powerful oratory, compassion and rich contribution to Karnah's Politics.

Badana died on March 13 last year at Srinagar after a short spin of illness. He was 77 then.

Born in 1943 he served in defense service for a short period of time. Af-terwards he resigned from defense forces and become a social activist af-ter reading seeing the pathetic life of the people of Karnah. In a short peri-od of time he emerged as a tall leader in mainstream politics of that time. He served as Member of Legislative Council for a period 12 years. He has

great links with then Chief Minister of J&K Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He worked really hard for the upliftment of the society and know for and wide for courage and wisdom. He had a great contribution in Gojri literature and used to write poetry. His pen name was Rameem.

On Badana's first anniversary rich tributes is being payed to him by Presi-dent Civil Society Karnah, Peerzada Siraj he said "Badana Sab was an man of eth-ics, he had never compromised with his values. He will be remembered forever." Many other famous personalities of Kar-nah like Ishfaq Sayeed, Zubair Qureshi and Qazi Abdul Hamid also payed tribute to him.

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir Po-lice emerged victorious on various Policing fronts. This was stated by the Director General of Police J&K Dilbag Singh while speaking on the opening ceremony of the Inter Zone Sport Meet at Gulshan Ground here today.

The DGP said that J&K Police is a name, it is a dream and it is well known not only in J&K but at the national and international level for its successes. He said that the com-mitment, dedication and devotion shown by JKP, has written history of the force in golden letters. He said that good work and sacrifices of J&K Police have been lauded and recog-nized at various platforms by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Home Min-ister of India, and Lt. Governor of J&K . He said that during the in last couple of years the J&K Police has become the recipient of a number of medals including Shaurya Chakras and Kirti Chakra.

The DGP said whether its law & order, security management, on anti-terrorism front, war against drugs or handling other assignments J&K Police’s commitment in its work during the past few years is unparal-leled. He said that the role played by the J&K Police soon after the outbreak of COVID pandemic is highly ap-preciated. He said that 15 personnel laid down their lives while protecting our own people while containing the spread of deadly virus and added that hundreds of our brave personnel were affected.

The DGP said that J&K Police’s commitment to peace, nation build-ing is ever strong. He said that our aim to bring more normalcies will continue with more zest and zeal. He said that our relation with the people of J&K is an example in itself,

and added that at every corner of the nation it is known. He said that J&K Police is facing challenge of terror-ism and other challenges yet not a single civilian casualty has been reported while dealing all these chal-lenges. He said that we have learned a lot during the last three decades and we have become stronger in handling any challenge. He said the important role played by other se-curity agencies in prevailing peace in J&K is remarkable and appre-ciable.

The DGP said that after a long gap due to the outbreak of COVID pan-demic sports activities began from 20th September 2020 when the gov-ernment ordered relaxation in the sports activities. He said that differ-ent wings of Jammu and Kashmir Police grabbed the relaxation op-portunity and sports activities were kick started in length and breadth of UT with the participation and sup-port of local people. He said that in Kashmir he personally visited dif-ferent districts and was happy to

witness the enthusiastic atmosphere which had come to stand still due to the pandemic. He said that Jammu and Kashmir Police started sports activities with events like Cycling Race, Run for Fun, Run for Peace or Jashn-e-Dal function at Srinagar. In Bandipora 65 teams participated in four events. so in every other district of Kashmir zone and also in Jammu zone sports activities were carried and it was good to see the change in the atmosphere.

The DGP said that today with the start of four days sports activities these six zones representing all the personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police will compete for sports honours. He said that I am sure that all the participants will perform with spir-it and enthusiasm with which they had been performing prior to the outbreak of COVID. He said that in 2019 J&K Police has proved its worth in various sports events which in-cluded, scaling of Mount Everest by SgCts Nazir Ahamd & Falil Singh. He said that various teams of Jammu

& Kashmir Police have won medals and brought glory for the Police or-ganization. He congratulated Inspec-tor Kuldeep Handoo for being hon-oured with Dronacharya award.

While welcoming the retired, serv-ing police officers, players, the DGP said that such events provide an op-portunity to show talent. He said that the police personnel of different zones must take advantage of this. He complemented the ADGP Armed and IGP Armed for organizing the event.

Earlier, ADGP Armed A.K. Choud-hary in his address welcomed serv-ing, retired police officers, participat-ing zones and others. He gave a brief resume of the different events con-ducted by the J&K Police for its per-sonnel as also for the youth of the State under Civic Action Programme (CAP). He thanked the DGP J&K and Police Headquarters for supporting wholeheartedly to organise such events. He thanked all retired police officers for gracing the occasion. He also thanked departments, police wings and all the people for their cooperation in the successful orga-nization of the opening ceremony. The brainstorming discus-sion was held on Faculty Skill Development, Directors & Principals' Workshop, Career Counselling, Research Area Collaborations, Pilot Proj-ects, Summer School, Devel-oping Innovative Managers, Apprenticeship Training and Ensuring Quality Edu-cation.

Talat Parvez further said that the objective is to har-ness the potential of the students to tap the green energy potential and alter-nate energy sources of J&K in addition to the different management subjects.

He said there is a basket of initiatives available with the prestigious institutions like IIM Ahmadabad and NTPC to guide capacity and strength building of our education institutions.

Rohella added that though artificial intelligence, ma-chines have over taken hu-mans but there are still vast areas where humans can lead including leadership, En-ergy, Social engineering, Critical thinking, financial, retail management and other areas.

VC, IUST while speaking on need of new industry ori-ented courses, said that IUST can be the laboratory which will would be accessible to all the Colleges. He said ex-perts from outside shall partner with the university and Colleges for enhancing the capacity in higher educa-tion institutions.

The VC further added that

thought process has been initiated to shift paradigm of education. He said various courses which were highly job oriented a decade before have become obsolete now. He stressed to create a new setup which will be a game changer and help to overcome the market challenges ahead.

Tourism Deptt organises grand roadshow in ChennaiSO NEWS DESK

CHENNAI: The Department of Tourism, J&K in collabo-ration with the Travel Agents Society of Kashmir (TASK) organised a grand promo-tional evening and road show in Chennai in which more than 160 prominent travel agents including heads of main travel bodies partici-pated.

The highlight of the event was a detailed presentation of J&K tourism by Addl. Sec-retary Tourism JK, Waseem Raja about the known and lesser-known tourist destina-tions, art and craft, pilgrim and adventure tourism be-sides the upcoming festivals.

The Addl. Secretary Tour-ism appraised the jam-packed gathering about the rigorous promotional campaign launched by the department to attract tourists from across the country and the positive outcome of the events in terms of increasing tourist footfall during the winter season in the UT.

While highlighting the potential of Chennai as an emerging market for J&K

tourism, the Addl. Secretary Tourism sought support from the local travel trade frater-nity and the head of the as-sociations for promoting J&K's tourism potential.

Tamil- native Sharook was 18 years old when his experimental invention KalamSat was launched by NASA on June 21, 2017. It was Sharook's invention for the “ Cubes in Space” competition organized by NASA.

Weighing a mere 64 gm, it is made of 3D- printed carbon and fitted with a com-puter and temperature, magnetism and alti-tude sensors. Its launch was meant to show scientists how 3D- printed carbon fared in outer space. During its 12- minute mission,

the satellite collected and stored data before returning to Earth and falling into the sea.

A beacon of hopeFlorida native 18-year-old Hannah Herbst

disproves people who believe that teens live in their own bubble, disconnected from the world’s challenges and troubles. Hannah’s invention, BEACON, short for Bringing Elec-tricity Access to Countries Through Ocean Energy, uses ocean energy to generate elec-tricity. It all started when 15-year-old Han-nah learnt that her nine-year- old pen pal in Ethiopia had no access to electricity. A little research told her the problem was only

too common. Going with the reasoning that every human settlement would be around a water body, Hannah set about inventing a device to tap the energy in moving water and convert it to electricity. The BEACON is essentially a hollow plastic tube connect-ed to a propeller at one end and a generator at the other. Ocean waves and tides turn the propeller generating energy that the genera-tor converts to electricity. Hannah has been continuously improving the device, which has already been tested in an actual water-way and now includes a component to purify water.

Say no to plasticInternational travelers to Bali, Indonesia,

are asked if they would like to declare plastic bags, in addition to weapons or excess mon-ey. Melati and Isabel Wijsen's fight against plastic is the reason for this. Inspired by the African Country of Rwanda, which had banned plastic bags in 2008, the girls set up their company Bye Bye Plastic when they re-alized the importance of getting people to day ' no' to plastic bags. Beach clean-cut ups were the first step, followed by petitions. Their company now has a global presence and their efforts have had tangible results. They suc-ceeded in getting Bali airport to ban plastic bags in 2016. By January 2018, Bali had de-clared itself plastic- free. Indonesia has given itself until 2021 to be rid of plastic. When the sisters were asked what inspired them, they said that they sat through a lesson in school about Nelson Mandela. Mahatma Gandhi and Lady Diana. They took in their words and ac-tions and decided to be the change they want-ed to see in the world- one plastic at a time. Be the change you want to see in the world, was followed by them.

It is in our handsIt was September 9, 2018, a month before

the elections in Sweden. Greta Thunberg,15 at the time, skipped school to spend the entire day on the steps of the Swedish Parliament, demanding that the government take appro-priate steps to combat climate change. After the elections, she continued her protest by skipping school all Fridays, spending them at the Parliament. With keen interest in the environment, Greta noticed how everyone talked about climate change but did nothing

concrete about it. For six years, she had done her own research to learn more about what she could do to protect the environment. At the end of it, she had a changed lifestyle. She stopped eating meat, travelling by air and buying anything that was not absolutely nec-essary. Her family followed in her footsteps. They installed solar panels in their home and started growing vegetables in their kitch-en garden. They would ride bikes to work and would use an electric car only when unavoidable. Thunberg has been calling out the patchwork environmental policies of gov-ernments. In her recent speech at the United Nations, she said,” We have not come here to beg world leaders to care. You have ignored us in the past and you will ignore us again. We have run out of excuses and we are run-ning out of time. We have come here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people.”

The world is witnessing voices of teens, regarding their social life, political life, eco-nomic life, moral life, etc. Adults can no lon-ger ignore them. Their voices have profound effect. They have left a deep mark on the psyche of the world. There is a hope in the air. And I think that it will be in the shape of teens who have unbiased view towards the world. That viewleads to Sustainable Devel-opment.

Youth Should Be Given A Chance

According to the World Health Or-ganization, Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries with 45% of the population living be-

low the poverty line. Apart from socio-eco-nomic factors and the mountainous terrain, susceptibility to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides as well as armed insurgencies, make the delivery of healthcare particularly complex in Nepal.

“Technology can help us address this challenge by taking quality, affordable healthcare services to people’s homes,” says Dr. Bishal Dhakal, Founder and CEO of Health at Home, one of the pioneers of home healthcare services in Nepal.

Here are edited excerpts from a video in-terview with the cardiac-surgeon-turned-so-cial-entrepreneur on the need for hospital systems “to become like a pit stop in Formu-la One”, innovation in healthcare, vaccine hesitancy, and more:

How has the pandemic changed the health tech ecosystem in Nepal?

The pandemic impacted mobility and that was the biggest issue. Access to health-care was broken, with no way to connect people to the medical system. However, peo-ple were very responsive to public health initiatives and campaigns. Telephone con-sultations became the norm, with the gov-ernment launching a health hotline. Sev-eral civic organisations, including Health at Home, were active in terms of providing resources and mobilising care.

It made people rethink unnecessary hos-pital visits and follow-ups, and recognise the undervalued solutions that are already available. The concept of remote care has seen that kind of re-engagement.

Do you see a technology gap in health-

care? How can that be addressed?There are laggards in technology adop-

tion. But is technology the only thing that we’re looking at in healthcare? Despite all the hype around AI, ML and other technolo-gies in Fintech, for example, are they able to enhance the financial processes?

Healthcare is a little different from other industries. We’re not using technology from the industrial model modus operandi or for system design enhancement. We can have a virtual university for education, but we don’t have a virtual hospital.

What we need in healthcare is a hybrid model and the pandemic has only helped fast forward the process. Along with technology, there has to be human interface. And that’s true even for virtual healthcare. We need to look at technology as a means to enhance ac-cess to care and improve people’s lives.

Why did you adopt entrepreneurship as a tool of change?

I’m a rebel! I was not happy with the fact that healthcare is bonded to the hospital system. Health at Home is one of the first in-tegrated care models in Southeast Asia that provides an alternative model. This space is only going to evolve in the next decade and I’m very happy to be part of it.

Currently, our problem is the social structure, where corruption is ingrained. I think for every dollar we invest, 80% can be returned back to consumers in certain ways. As the doctors evolve and the technol-ogies evolve, in another five to seven years, there will an interesting shift. Revenues will not be based on the subscriber model or the number of beds that hospitals have, but the kind of care that can be provided remotely. The governments, insurance companies, pharma companies and other stakeholders will see value in the new system.

What is Nepal’s biggest healthcare chal-lenge?

Our challenge is geography. Our hills make it very difficult to ensure timely ac-cess to care because of mobility issues. In terms of infrastructure, we don’t have that much of a problem.

While I have a lot of resentment about donor-based government structures, I also believe that we have fantastic public health programmes for pregnant women, maternal care and newborn care. We need to improve our chronic disease management though. Over the next one or two years, I expect to see our remote monitoring or remote sup-port programmes cover more ground.

How much of healthcare services can ac-tually be provided remotely?

80% of hospital care can be provided at home. However, given our conservative

medical educational system, doctors are bound to resist this change. So, there will be conflict, until doctors finally take ownership and get ready to step outside of the hospital system. While emergency procedures and critical care will happen in hospitals, every-thing else will move out into people homes and remote care setups. The hospital system has to become like a pit stop in Formula One. It will still be there, but the efficiency will go up. A 50-bed hospital will be perform-ing 150 surgeries and critical care proce-dures. Think about the efficiency in human resource management and the capital that we’re burning today!

With India and China adopting vaccine diplomacy to strengthen ties with Nepal, could you give us an insider’s perspective

on the issue?I’m not an expert on diplomacy, but as

I understand the world, it’s good that it is diplomacy and not war! This is going to be a big issue. See how Italy, for example, is blocking the shipment of COVID-19 vaccine doses to Australia.

Any country that is outside of the system (that controls the international market) will face the challenge. You can call it a monop-oly. It would have been better if the market would have opened up and we had a choice to buy from different sellers.

Healthcare is a human issue and we need to work together to ensure equal access to care. I’m vaccinated (in childhood and now for COVID), but it’s sad that 50% of doctors in Nepal may not opt for vaccination.

How do we handle this vaccine hesitan-cy?

First things first, we cannot equate vac-cination efficacy in children with that in adults. It’s like comparing apples and orang-es. Children can’t deny, adults can!

As far as the COVID vaccine is concerned, 50% efficacy is pretty good. But it could have been better, right? So, I think it’s fair if some people are hesitant about taking the shot. This is going to be an ongoing process in the public health domain.

What’s your word of advice to those who believe that the best medical care can hap-pen only in hospitals?

It’s like trying to convince those who be-lieve that God resides in temples, mosques, or churches, that He is everywhere. You can’t change that notion! In many ways, I think hospitals have been building up that notion of a religious cult.

We need to bring about a paradigm shift. And we will do it in the next five years.

The Quran is the last holy book that Allah sent down to people. The Quran was sent down to the Prophet Hz. Muhammad (pbuh) through Gabriel (Jibril) and then it reached today

through being written down and reported.The Quran is a material and spiritual guide for

individuals and the community, all classes of people living in any place or time and for the whole life of man. Everybody, from the president to the man in the street, finds the things that are about them in the Quran. They take the knowledge and lessons that are necessary for peace and tranquility both in the world and the hereafter.

The virtues and characteristics of the Quran are stated as follows in verses and hadiths:

* "And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that ye may receive mercy."(al-Anam, 6/155).

* "And this is a Book which We have sent down, bringing blessings and confirming (the revelations) which came before it: that thou mayest warn the Mother of Cities and all around her. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in this (Book), and they are constant in guarding their prayers."(al-Anam, 6/92).

* "Do they not ponder on the Qur'an (with care)? Had it been from other than Allah, they would sure-ly have found therein much discrepancy." (an-Nisa, 4/82).

* "The Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong)..."(al-Baqara, 2/185).

* "The Quran is guidance and glad tidings for those who believe."(al-Baqara, 2/97).

* "This Quran is a guidance and glad tidings for those who believe."(Sad, 38/29).

* The following is reported from Harith bin Awar: Once, Hz. Ali said:

"I heard the Messenger of Allah say:'Behold! A dissension will come.' Thereupon, I asked,'O Messenger of Allah! What is the way out of it? '

He said,'It is to obey the Book of Allah.'(Then Prophet (SAW)

explained the characteristics of the Quran as follows:'It contains all information about what has hap-

pened to those communities before you, news of dis-sensions and tumults that will happen after you and signs of Doomsday. It is the distinguisher between the truth and the falsehood. If anyone seeks guidance elsewhere Allah will lead him astray. It is the strong rope of Allah. It is the reminder with wisdom, and it is the straightest path. It protects souls who obey it from being ruined and misguidance and tongues that recite it from ambiguity.

Scholars of the Qur’an always crave more from it. Reading it again and again never bores its reader; neither does the reader lose any taste by reading it over and over again. Its magnificent wonders that astonish the mankind never end, "They said We have really heard a wonderful Recital." (al-Jinn 1). He who utters it, speaks the truth. He who acts according to it, will be rewarded. He who pronounces judgment according to it, will be just. He who invites people to it, will guide them to a straight path.'" * "The superiority of the Quran to other words is like the superiority of ar-Rahman to His creatures."

* "If a person reads a verse from the Book of Allah, it will be a luminous light for him on the Day of Judg-

ment."* "Make your houses luminous by performing

prayers and reading the Quran."The Quran was revealed into the heart of the

Prophet (pbuh) in terms of not only its meaning but also its words. That is why, the Quran is called wahy al-matluww (the recited revelation). Therefore, the Quran is the whole of not only meaning but also words. The Quran was not sent down to the Prophet (pbuh) as a whole; it was sent down verse by verse and chap-ter by chapter.

The Miracle of the QuranThe Quran contains all kinds of principles of creed,

deeds and ethics that will make man attain real bliss. It is a great literary miracle in terms of its words and meaning. The Prophet (pbuh) stated the following regarding the issue:

"Every Prophet was given miracles because of which people believed, but what I have been given, is Divine Inspiration which Allah has revealed to me. So I hope that my followers will outnumber the fol-lowers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection."(Bukhari, Fadailu'l-Qur'an, 1)

In fact, the miracles of the other prophets ended as their time passed. The miracle of the Quran will exist until Doomsday. In various verses of the Quran, it is insistently stated that the Quran is a miracle:

"Say: "If the whole of mankind and Jinn were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support...."(al-Isra, 17/88).

As a matter of fact, nobody has been able and will be able to produce a verse similar to the verses of the Quran in terms of style and eloquence. The Quran is a miracle in terms of its words and meaning. The Prophet (pbuh) could not read and write. He did not learn anything from anybody.

Therefore, he was regarded to be illiterate. How-ever, the book he brought contained great realities and informed about many scientific truths that sci-ence and experience managed to find in fourteen hundred years. This proves that the Quran is the word of Allah directly. For instance, the fact that the sun rotates around itself and moves toward a fixed point along with the other planets dependent on it, the opening of the pyramids and the mummified bodies of the Pharaohs were discovered in the last century.

However, the Quran informed us about them and similar realities many centuries ago. No matter how much science develops, it cannot contradict the Quran. On the contrary, the development in science will make it easier for the Quran to be interpreted and explained. As Badiuzzaman Said Nursi puts it,

"As time gets older, the Quran gets younger; the realities it contains become apparent more brightly."

Another miraculous aspect of the Quran is that it prophesied many events that took place later. What-ever it prophesied happened exactly.

Some of the definitions and description of the Quran are as follows:

- The All-Wise Qur'an, which makes known to us our Sustainer, is the pre-eternal translator of the great Book of the Universe...

This universe is likened to a great book written by the pen of power. In a booklet, the phrase signs of creation (ayat at-takwiniyya) is used for the beings in the world. Sign of creation means what is created based on the command "be" (kun), what shows the existence, oneness, names and attributes of Allah and what serves as evidence for them. The verses (signs) in the Quran come from the attribute of Allah called speech and the signs in the universe come from His attribute called power (qudrah).

This book of the universe makes Allah known with all of its signs but humans have not been able to read it and evaluate it correctly. That is, they did not un-derstand the language of the book.The All-Wise Quran translated the book of the universe, informed humans about it and described our Lord, who is the writer of this book, to us. It told us about His attributes, names

and deeds.- the discloser of the treasures of the Divine Names

concealed in the pages of the earth and the heavens...Concealed means veiled, covered, that has become

invisible and unknown. Thanks to the Quran, trans-lating the book of the universe, the manifestations of the names of Allah that had been concealed in the world and in the sky started to be read. In this sentence, the names of Allah are likened to treasures. For in-stance, the name al-Khaliq (the Creator) is a treasure; all creatures are like the jewels of that treasure. The name al-Muhyi (the Giver of Life) is a separate trea-sure; all lives come from the treasure.

- the key to the truths hidden beneath these lines of events...

In this book of the universe, every event, like every creature, is like a word or line. It is necessary to read them correctly. The truths that are concealed under events can be read correctly only by the guidance and instruction of the Quran.

Night and day, health and illness, joy and sorrow, old age and death are all truths written in this book. The most important event for men among them is death. Those who regard death as "non-being, non-existence, entering into grave and disappearing" cannot understand the reality of death and miseval-uate that important event. The reality of death is understood with the guidance of the Quran. Birth means to come to the world from the wound; simi-larly, death means to go to the realm of barzakh from the world. Then, another birth called ba'th will follow it; people will go to the Gathering Place from the realm of grave through it.

There are very detailed explanations about the reality of death in Risale-i Nur Collection. Let us remember some of them: Death is “a change of resi-dence, a rest from duty,the liberation of the spirit”. The grave is “the gate of a realm that is better than this world.”

- the treasury of the favors of the Most Merciful and pre-eternal addresses, which come forth from the World of the Unseen beyond the veil of this Man-ifest World...

The phrase the world of unseen mentioned above can be understood as the great throne where this visible realm is controlled and administered, as the realm of similitude where the examples of everything are taken, and as the unknown realms like the Pre-served Tablet (Lawh al-Mahfuz) where everything is recorded and preserved.

The words favor and addressing complete each other and point to the same target. Being addressed by God Almighty is a great favor for His servants. Being informed about His commands and prohibi-tions, attaining His consent, and being shown the ways of going to Paradise are a great grace and grant of God.

- the sun, foundation, and plan of the spiritual world of Islam...

The source of all beauties, virtues, merits and high ethics, primarily belief, is the sun of the Quran. The foundation of our religion is the realities of the Quran. A building of guidance and stability that will con-tinue forever was built by hadiths, which are the first interpreters of the Quran, on this foundation.

The word plan can be interpreted as the ijtihads and fatwas produced under the light of the Quran and hadiths in order to answer the new needs that arise in the growing building of Islam.

- and the map of the worlds of the hereafter...In the Quran, the road map of the life in the here-

after that starts with going to the Gathering Place and continues as “standing, scales (Mizan), bridge (Sirat) and Paradise or Hell" is drawn; the nice aspects of Paradise and the tortures of Hell are also shown to the man like photographs.

- the distinct expounder, lucid exposition, articulate proof, and clear translator of the Divine Essence, attributes, and deeds...

The only source of sound information about the essence, attributes, and deeds of Allah is the Quran. Human mind and imagination cannot do anything

about these unknown and eternal realities. Since Allah makes Himself known in the Quran, there is no need for man's groundless guesses and invalid thoughts.

We learn from the verses of the Quran and our authorized scholars the following reality and similar ones: “Allah’s existence is necessary; He is pre-eter-nal and post-eternal; He is free from time and space; He has endless attributes; no change or decrease will take place in these attributes no matter how many creatures He creates; His existence and attributes, His mercy and wrath, His compassion and jealousy and all of His other deeds cannot be compared to the states and abilities of His creatures.

The beings in the universe declare the existence of Allah and His attributes with their states but peo-ple generally ignore these spiritual expressions or misunderstand them. Therefore, burhan an-natiq (articulate proof) is necessary. (When the phrase burhan an-natiq is used for the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), it means the one who conveys the message of the Quran to people.)

The phrase clear translator means the Quran translates the words of the book of the universe to the people who do not understand them; it has a sim-ilar meaning to the phrase articulate proof.

the instructor, true wisdom, guide, and leader of the world of humanity...

The Quran was sent down in order to train the spirits of people, to perfect their hearts through belief and their minds through science and knowledge, to teach them true wisdom, to dissuade people from the wrong paths and to show them the way of guidance. True wisdom, that is, the real information about the purpose of the creation of both human beings and other creatures and their duties can be learned from the Quran because the verses of the Quran are the words of the Creator who created those beings.

As it is known, the word "wisdom" is also used for philosophy. The adjective "true" used here indicates that philosophy is not true wisdom.

Wisdom has several definitions. One of them is "deeds together with knowledge" (practicing what one knows and learns) That is, if an idea makes man do good deeds, it has wisdom. Ideas that are only talked about but not practiced are personal ideas; they cannot be a means of guidance for people.

it is both a book of wisdom and law, and a book of prayer and worship, and a book of command and summons, and a book of invocation and Divine knowl-edge - it is book for all spiritual needs; and it is a sacred library offering books appropriate to the ways of all the saints and veracious, the purified and the scholars, whose ways and paths are all different...

The Quran is a book wisdom because it teaches man the purpose and duties of all beings; it is a book of shari'ah (law) because it informs man of the com-mands and prohibitions regarding both individual and social life.

It also contains "prayer, worshipping, commands and calls", which are essentials of shrai'ah, with all aspects.

The Quran is a book of dhikr which makes man gain at least ten rewards for its one letter when he reads it; it is also a book of knowledge in that it makes Allah known with His names and attributes.

The essentials of all true ways and paths are pres-ent in the Quran. Every fruit tree perceives a differ-ent fruit based on their structure in the universe; similarly, every tafsir scholar perceives different meanings in the Quran, finds doors of different knowl-edge, becomes exposed to the manifestations of dif-ferent names of Allah and presents a different way of guidance. SRINAGAR: Doctors Association Kash-mir (DAK) today expressed its serious concerns over step-motherly treatment with doctors from health department who are working on deputation in newly formed Govt Medical Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir. A delegation of such doc-tor's called upon Central members of the Association and apprised the mem-bers that most of the senior specialists, specialists and super-specialist doctors are forced to work as either as junior residents or as multiple purpose medi-cal officers rather than assigning them expert and stream specific job for which they have been deputed to such associ-ated Hospitals

DAK President Dr Suhail Naik, said it will be better for large patient inter-est and smooth functioning of hospi-tal if the services of these consultants, specialist and super-specialist doctors from health dept are utilised in anal-ogy with faculty members of GMCs

.There will be harmful effects of this notion to create hurdles and obstruc-tion in working of such doctors of health department.

General Secretary DAK, Dr Owais H Dar said it’s unfortunate that the doc-tors from health department are pushed to wall in New GMCs. It should not be made as a matter of Ego between fac-ulty members and specialist doctors of health with same or more qualification.

Degrees and experience of these spe-cialist/ super specialist doctors should be respected and giving them optimal space for work so that there is a posi-tive impact in-terms of services provided to public at large . Furthermore it will also help in reducing the referrals to Ter-tiary Care Hospitals of Srinagar. It has also been brought in notice of DAK that while faculty members are allowed to proceed on vacations but many a times consultants from Health Department are not being allowed to proceed on earned leaves which is their legal right

Conducive and cordial work envi-ronment is need of the hour for optimal working and growth of departments in these newly formed GMCs.

GANDERBAL: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Ganderbal today organised Mega Legal awareness cum Services camp at Mammer Kangan, here under the directions of Executive Chairman Jammu & Kashmir Legal Ser-vices Authority, Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey, who is also the Judge of High Court of Jammu & Kashmir.

The camp was organised with the objective of making people in general and poor and weaker sections of the society in particular aware of their entitlements under various enactments and welfare schemes in compliance to the constitution-al mandate of ‘Access to Justice for all’.

The event was held with the active cooperation of the District Administra-tion and Police.

JAMMU: Divisional Commis-sioner Jammu, Sanjeev Verma today reviewed the progress on land acquisition for National Highway 244 Khaleni- Kisht-war- Chatroo and Jammu Akhnoor Road here at a meet-ing with concerned officers.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioner Central, ACR Jammu, besides senior functionaries of NHIDCL and other concerned, while Deputy Commissioner Doda and Kishtwar attended the meeting through video con-ferencing.

BARAMULLA: For the last three days, residents of Namblan and Gulistan villag-es in Narwav Tehsil of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, have been suffering due to unavailability of electricity.

As per the locals, the two adjacent vil-lages have been longing for electricity supply since the rains lashed the valley; despite the step down transformers installed there have no issues.

Panch of the village Namblan, Abdul Majid Bhat told Kashmir News Bureau that the electricity was gone after the first spell of rainfall and since then the villages have been in dark.

He said, “We are living in the dark for days now! I don’t understand how a weather phenomenon can cause an issue

which can’t be fixed within three days.”He added, “Concerned officials have

been giving their word that the supply will resume in sometime, then they said another day, but apparently no such prom-ise was fulfilled.”

“Surprisingly, as per the concerned PDD employees, the transformers installed in our villages are absolutely fine,” Bhat said and further asked, “Then why are we suffering? Why are we being kept in the dark?”

Athar Malik, another local of the area said that only these Two villages of the tehsil have been deprived of the basic necessity.

He said, “apart from these two, all the nearby villages of the Narwav are being provided the electricity supply on the scheduled time.”He also said that the Power receiving station is just nearby but the residents of these villages have not been given any reason for the delay in restoration of electricity.

parent district their additional charge has been given to other Pat-waris rather than giving charge of that area to separate Patwari. This makes for masses the Pat-wari often inaccessible as he has got excuse of additional charge. It is also learnt that in other weird

Development scores of Patwaris in Srinagar are not filling their annual progress report as they don't want to get promoted sug-gesting the deep rooted corrup-tion. This facet is also hitting the honest lot. "

Inam affirmed that under

RAJOURI: BJP Sokesperson and Chairperson of Waqf Development Committee of Ministry of Minority Affairs Dr Darakhshan Andrabi has expressed her deep anguish over the blasphemous statements and acts of the criminal Waseem Rizvi and demanded that he should be booked under Public Safety Act so that such non-sense is stopped once for all. “His statements are blasphe-mous. He is a criminal who wants to divert the public attention from his criminal cases by this danger-ous and criminal outpour. Quran is a divine book which teaches peace and brotherhood. Nobody has the authority or power to edit contents of the Holy book,” said BJP leader.

“Waseem Rizvi is under scan-ner of CBI for some severe crimi-nal cases and he is using his dirty tactics to get respite from being con-victed. Government should arrest him immediately and book him under PSA. This act is as dangerous as terrorism and India cannot toler-ate any kind of religious blasphemy at all,” said Dr Andrabi. She said that expression of speech and free-

dom has its own limits. Dr Andrabi said that faith is very sensitive and nobody can be allowed to enjoy the privileges of publically expressing the personal insanity and mental disorder and create a law and order situation. “I have talked to the Minister of minority affairs Mr Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi regarding the issue and later contacted con-cerned law-enforcing agencies and was assured that he will soon be booked,” said Dr Andrabi. She said that Supreme Court should immedi-ately dismiss the plea submitted by this lunatic keeping in view the sen-timents of crores of people within the country. She has appealed to the public to maintain calm and peace as taught by Quran and the great prophet Mohammad (pbuh).

SHOPIAN: The Agriculture department today organised a Kissan Mela cum Exhi-bition at Old Fruit Mandi, Shopian.

The District Development Commission-er (DDC) Shopian, Sachin Kumar Vaishya was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

As many as 20 stalls were established at the venue for displaying various items related to agriculture and allied sectors.

During the inspection of the stalls, the DDC was briefed by the officers of agricul-ture, horticulture, fisheries, sericulture, JK Agro Industries Development Cor-poration, Cooperative Marketing Soci-ety, Handicrafts, Social Welfare, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Animal and Sheep Husbandry departments with regard to their achievements and the latest farmer friendly schemes, equipment’s and tech-nologies.

Besides these, some private entrepre-neurs also displayed their items during the event.

The DDC appreciated the role of the agriculture department for conducting such an event and bringing all the allied sectors under one roof to work for the upliftment of the farming community, thereby paving way for progress of the district and simultaneously addressing the issue of un-employment of youth to a large extent.

He also laid emphasis on the farming community to take advantage of vari-ous schemes of agriculture and its allied sectors that are in vogue for their better

future. He further stressed that the need of the hour is to promote agriculture and all allied sectors in the district which are income and employment generating.

DODA: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Doda, Dr Sagar D Doifode today chaired the meeting of concerned officers to review the traffic de congestion measures in the Doda town.

During the meeting, the DC held threadbare discussion on various mea-sures for traffic decongestion in Doda town, especially in and around Bus stand Doda.

It was informed that more than 15 RTC buses remain parked in the bus stand, while around 100 illegal Rehries are also placed in and around Bus stand which is hampering the movement of traffic.The DC prohibited the parking of RTC buses at bus stand, also asked the concerned to allow only 2 buses at a time in the bus stand, besides asked them to park their buses outside Sports Stadium.

Further, the DC also directed the concerned not to allow the entry of load carriers inside the city during the day time.Regarding the prevalence of Reh-ries in and around bus stand Doda, the DC directed the Executive Officer, MC to remove the same within two days.

While reviewing the issue of recent accidents, mainly of Eco vehicles, the DC directed the ARTO to evaluate a

comprehensive plan to phase out these as well as other vehicles which are not suitable to ply on local roads to avoid any untoward incident in the future also.Besides, the DC directed the Traffic, MVD and Municipal-ity Department to remove all the encroachments from the road sides,

and take strict action against the ille-gal parking.

In a statement issued on Saturday Hakeem Yaseen while condemn-ing Wasim Rizvi for his blasphemous act against holly book Qura'n , has demanded severe punishment to him. " By insulting The Noble Quran, Wasim Rizvi has hurt religious sentiments of Muslim Ummah and has resorted to spreading of hatred among the com-munity, Hakeem Yaseen maintained.

He said Wasim should be dealt with and punished in same way as was was given to notorious Salmaan Rushdie for hurditng the religious sentiments of Muslim community. "Undoubtedly the Quran was a divine book sent down by

the Almighty Allaah and He was himself its gaurd-ian, “Hakeem Yaseen said while quoting Quranic verses “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guard.

Hakeem Yaseen said that The Quran is the identity of all Muslims and disrespecting it was

SRINAGAR: Quran is La Rayba Fih (doubtless) for Muslims, and nothing can be changed from Bismillah to An-Nas, said Shia leader and chairman of J&K Ittehad ul Muslimeen Masroor Abbas Ansari on Saturday while responding in reaction to the Wasim Rizvi’s filing of PIL in court for removing of 26 verses of Quran which he claims to propagate ‘violence’.

While talking to the news agency, Masroor Abbas said that it is not the first time Wasim Rizvi has said some-thing of such kind. He said that Wasim Rizvi was excluded from Islam and Shia sect by the revered Ayatollah Sistani after raising some issues and is Munkir of rules of Islam and Shi’ism.

“How can a person, who does not know the meaning of the Quran and does not know how to read it, demand such a thing? Our belief is that the

Quran is Allah’s book and was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). From Bismillah to An-Nas, everything writ-ten in Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from time to time and was recorded and divided into chap-

ters which later was distributed to the people,” said Masroor Abbas.

He further said that Wasim Rizvi’s claims that there have been some ‘addi-tions’ in the Quran are preposterous. “The Quran is La Rayba Fih (Doubtless), and constitution of Muslims. Wasim Rizvi is doing such things for political gains,” Masroor Abbas said.

Responding to a question of Wasim Rizvi’s likely chances of creating a rift between Sunni and Shias by his move, he said that it could be seen in that way also and past statements of Wasim is the justification of that thing.

Masroor Abbas said that Wasim Riz-vi's words should not be seen through an angle of a Shia as he has already been excluded from the sect of Shi'ism.

He also appealed that people of J&K should not fall prey to his tactics of cre-ating a divide between Sunni and Shia and urged to keep the unity between two sects intact. (KNB)

RAJOURI: Prof. Akbar Masood, Vice Chancellor, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University said that aca-demic and administrative reforms will continue to make BGSBU a centre of excellence in teaching and research. Prof. Akbar said that to position BGSBU as global talent hub, we should become capable of being nimble, anticipatory, imaginative and reactive.

Introducing series of reforms, Prof. Akbar stressed the upon the importance of bringing changes in academics and administration to

take BGSBU at new heights of suc-cess at par with global contempo-raries.

To bring in efficiency in day to day affairs of the University, Prof. Akbar has ordered that the all files shall be disposed of expeditiously and shall not remain at any desk beyond two working days. Prof. Akbar said that this will not only ensure timely completion of rou-tine work but will bring transpar-ency in dealing with day to day affairs of the University.

In another decision which aims at streamlining the functioning of various offices of the University

and to ensure quick disposal of requests received from various quarters, Prof. Akbar has ordered that all correspondence of teach-ing departments should be routed through the Deans of respective schools.

In another important decision, Prof. Akbar has ordered that tech-nology driven Student's feedback (anonymous) shall be regularly obtained from the teaching depart-ments. This will help to facilitate the teaching- learning process. Further, to provide an easy access to information for students and other stakeholders, Prof. Akbar has

ordered that all circulars, notifica-tions and orders pertaining to stu-dents shall be updated on the Uni-versity website on regular basis.

Prof. Akbar said that these reforms represent a significant step forward to develop BGSB Univer-sity a centre of excellence in teach-ing and research. Soon after taking over as the Vice Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Prof. Akbar has unleashed series of reforms and has sought sugges-tions from various stakeholders including members of civil society to develop a prospective develop-ment plan for the University.

KULGAM: To enhance the capaci-ties of Child Protection Committees at block and village level in the dis-trict, a daylong training programme was today organised by Integrated Child Protection Services (ICPS) at DIET Complex, here.

Police arrest five gamblers in south KashmirSRINAGAR: Jammu and Kash-mir police arrested five gamblers and recovered stake money in south Kashmir district of Kulgam, a police spokesman said on Satur-day afternoon.

He said on a tip off a police party raided a gambling site at Qazigund in Kulgam district. Five gamblers were arrested and stake money Rs 9020 were recovered.

SRINAGAR: Apni Party (AP) Presi-dent Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Saturday raised serious concern over the water logging problem in the various areas of Kashmir division especially in Srinagar city.

In a statement here this afternoon, Bukhari, a former minister said that in the aftermath of the incessant rain-falls, the whole valley appears to have inundated and the administration seems to be impervious in its response to this grave issue which has forced most of the residents in Srinagar to remain confined inside their houses.

“The administrative apathy has unleashed the flood like conditions in the whole valley especially in Sri-nagar. I have been raising the issue of drainage failure in Srinagar city since 2014 but no concrete steps are being taken to address this problem perma-nently,” Bukhari said.

He further said the available dewa-tering system in Srinagar is extremely mediocre and the government should take focus on up-gradation of human

resources and machinery of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) so as to enable it to cope up with these chal-lenging situations.

“The dredging of river Jhelum is being carried out at snail’s pace, dewa-tering systems are run-of-the-mill and the condition of the drainage system is awfully horrendous. The government must come up with a comprehensive drainage plan under Smart City Proj-ect otherwise these flash-flood condi-tions will be perpetually burgeoning,’’ he said.

Bukhari also appealed to the people to minimize the usage of plastic and polythene bags which act as choking agents inside the drains and eventually lead to its blockage particularly in the Srinagar city.

“We as responsible citizens also need to cultivate a good civic sense and stop the usage of polythene and plastic bags so that the sewage pipes and drains don’t get clogged. In the meantime, the govern-ment agencies must stand at guard to act promptly if any inconvenient situation arises until a lasting solution is brought in,” he concluded.

India shackled by faulty execution, not approachWith a home World Cup around

the corner, India’s batting unit had received a “play

aggressive” memo from their skipper on the eve of the T20I series opener against England, and they followed it to a tee. But while the intent was hon-est, the execution went awry in the first of the five attempts at hand.

Sample the three dismissals at the top of the order.

England threw a googly upfront, liter-ally and figuratively, and Adil Rashid squeezed out a tidy opening over for two. Jofra Archer cranked up the pace at the other end and KL Rahul ended up dragging one back onto his stumps to fall for 1 off 4 in that wicket-maiden second over. Trying to break free, Vi-rat Kohli went hard at one from Rashid and flat-batted it straight to mid-off to bag a five-ball duck in the third. That he had attempted a similar shot against Archer in just the previous over - yet to get off the mark - and it didn’t come off, didn’t seem to faze him.

Promoted at No. 4 and in red-hot form, Rishabh Pant launched a brief counterattack as he picked 14 off his

first eight - including a six off a reverse sweep off Archer at express pace. But when Shikhar Dhawan tried to heave one to leg, he was cleaned up by Mark Wood for a 12-ball 4. India were left stuttering at 20 for 3 after 5 overs - a blow England’s bowlers never even let the hosts recover from despite Shreyas Iyer’s fighting 67.

Boosted by the addition of ‘X-Fac-tor’ personnel to their playing XI that promised more batting depth, India’s first attempt at trying to be more like England - a team they consider is the one to beat at the World Cup come October - failed abjectly. Embracing the aggressive philosophy that Kohli whole-heartedly endorsed meant In-dia’s top-three had walked out with a premeditated mindset to take the bowl-ing head on. That instead of their wick-et-conserving approach earlier, borne out of the lack of firepower down the order, India are now willing to trade off the more assured returns from an an-chor batsman amongst the top-three for more attacking starts.

It’s a template teams with greater batting depth have successfully imple-

mented - one that makes England the No. 1 side currently, and one that India are willing to adopt in the hope that it strengthens their bid for the trophy. With the return of Pant and Hardik Pandya in the middle-order, the im-pending comeback of Ravindra Jade-ja, and the inclusion of a host of other bowling options who can wield the long handle down the order, these hopes are not misplaced.

It gives the team the confidence to take that leap because there’s merit in that approach. But a ticking clock in

the background leaves India with only five strikes to hit the bullseye before a high-stakes event and every miss, therefore, tends to raise an alarm. That when paired up with the venom En-gland’s pace trio of Wood, Archer and Chris Jordan were spewing on a two-paced Ahmedabad track on Friday, it seemed counterproductive when India ended up consuming 23 dot balls in the powerplay alone. At 22 for 3 it was ev-ident that the batsmen had played the format, instead of the situation.

“We looked to try a few things, but

having said that as a batting side you have to accept the conditions,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation. “If the pitch allows you to play those kind of shots, you can be aggressive from ball one. But we got ahead of ourselves a little bit. We probably didn’t spend enough time out there in the middle to assess the conditions. Shreyas did that but there were too many wickets down at that stage to get past 150-160. Had we got, say, eight wickets in hand at the end of 10 overs then we could have got a few more runs and made a game out of it,” he reasoned as India could muster only 124 for 7.

Without making a U-turn on the ag-gression-over-caution theory, Kohli noted that the fault lay in the poor ex-ecution from the batsmen and not the plan itself. “We just weren’t aware enough of what we had to do on that kind of pitch,” he said.

“I think lack of execution of the shots that we tried to play out there in the middle is something we have to address as batsmen that it wasn’t an ideal day on the park. You have to accept your faults, come back in the next game with

a bit more intent, clarity of plans, what are the areas you want to hit.”

Admittedly England’s bowlers made India pay for the below-par batting, but knowing that the remaining four games is all they have as a team to-gether before the World Cup, it’s an approach the hosts aren’t willing to shed just yet, and shouldn’t if that is ultimately the formula being adopted going forward as Kohli insisted ahead of the series. Iyer, too, saw the merit in giving the strategy an extended run be-fore drawing any conclusions.

“We’ll definitely not change that be-cause you see the batting line-up that we have and the power-hitters we have down the line [order], we really don’t have to change anything to be honest,” Iyer told in the online press confer-ence. “We have come with a plan and we need to execute it as much as pos-sible because going into the World Cup we need to see to it that we’ve ticked all the boxes. We have to try as much as possible. It’s a five-match series, so it’s the perfect time for us to experiment with different stuff and see what suits us best.”

Creases to iron out for India building towards World Cup 2021New Delhi: The Women's World Cup is less than a year away in New Zea-land and given that the Indian wom-en's side has been hibernating for the last year, there is little time to find the perfect combination. Therefore this series against South Africa is cru-cial, although even before a ball was bowled, it had everyone on the back foot.

Firstly the Women's team had reached Lucknow, yet the BCCI hadn't even announced the squad. Secondly with a new selection committee com-ing to light in October 2020, they pro-vided some unique choices in both the 50 over and T20 format, that had most scratching their heads.

Plenty has been written about the omission of Shikha Pandey and right-ly so, though Harmanpreet Kaur in a press conference before the series stated that she has been rested and that they wanted to try other players for this series.

Yet after a year-long break from In-ternational cricket, this series would have been nice for her to get into the groove. Nonetheless we can only hope for her return in the next one.

Another player spoken about a lot is Shafali Verma. Shafali has performed brilliantly for India since 2019 and al-most single handedly took the team to the finals of the World Cup in March 2020.

She should have comfortably walked into the ODI side as her performance speaks for itself. To show her ability in the longer format, she scored 124 against Australia A in December 2019 and was the highest run getter in the

Challenger Trophy in Jan 2020. Some-times it is important to not judge new selections until games have taken place and given now that we have witnessed three ODIs, some assessments can be-gin to be made. For India to challenge the best in New Zealand, there are a few areas that they may want to strengthen. At the top, Jemimah Rodriques hasn't yet fired and in a short career so far for India has already registered six ducks.

The issue can be easily sorted out with everyone sliding up, with Poo-nam Raut to open, Mithali Raj at three, where her numbers are much better than number four and Harman-preet Kaur to move to four where she has scored all her three hundreds.

So who goes number five? Is that someone like Deepti Sharma? Maybe

not, instead India should be looking for some fire power, someone who is able to finish off an innings, who would play the situation, no matter what.

An option could be the other player who missed out on selection in the squad in both formats, but little has been written about the omission of Veda Krishnamurthy. Known as a true striker of the ball, who was part of the T20 side that played in the T20 World Cup final a year ago, her absence has some-what gone unnoticed.

However Veda does have two sides to her game, 'hit or miss,' 'break or bust, which has meant a fair bit of criticism when it doesn't come off. She is a nightmare for many bowlers and one team that she has had a lot of

success against is South Africa. She sits third among the top run scor-ers in ODIs against them and first in T20s with an impressive strike rate of 132.92. Her performance from 2019 to 2020 has been one of the most consistent, as she is amongst the top-five run scorers for India in the T20 format.

To add to her numbers, she has also been seen as a strong leader, hence given the honour to captain India A against a strong Australia A. Tour-ing Australia in December 2019, this squad was sent to get use to Austra-lian conditions and players that were on the fringe of the one day squad. It was here she scored a brisk 113 and was the highest runs scorer for India during that series. Additionally, Veda lead India C to victory in the Chal-lenger Trophy against the best in the country.

Whilst her outing in the tri-series and the T20 World Cup in Feb-March 2020 wasn't as successful as she would have wanted or the team, they did reach the final and she was part of the playing XI.

With a new selection committee coming in there doesn't seem to be consistency in thinking when com-pared to the former. The real ques-tion is how badly will this affect the Indian side moving forward and is there enough cricket for them to play to rectify the mistakes selec-tions have made? Time will only tell, but one hopes that with the domestic cricket being played at the moment, performances in that tournament will be looked upon favourably.

Record crowd post Covid in 1st Ind-Eng match

Ahmedabad: The T20 Inter-national between India and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday pos-sibly saw the largest crowd at a venue ever since cricket resumed post Covid-19 lock-down with as many as 57,000 people, including volunteers and police, attending it, say local officials.

While there have been matches in various stadia around the world with lim-ited crowd capacity, none has been able to so far match the attendance at the Motera stadium thanks to its sheer capacity -- it has a capacity of 1,10,000 out of which Gujarat Cricket Association has al-lowed 50 per cent attendance.

"We had 52,000 official ad-mission through turnstile (tickets). There were 3,000-4,000 complimentary tickets. The rest were police and

volunteers, bringing the to-tal to about 57,000," Anil Pa-tel, the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, told IANS. Another official said that the demand for low priced tickets were more.

"Most of the crowd bought tickets at the low-end, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. There was less demand for high-end tickets," added the official.

The first international game to witness spectators was the Australia-New Zea-land women's limited-overs series that began in Brisbane in late September, 2020.

Men's cricket began wit-nessing crowds from Novem-ber-end with crowds being allowed in New Zealand and Australia. However, those were only limited capacities.

Beaten in Doha, Federer goes back to training

Doha: Roger Federer’s hopes of winning a fourth title in Qatar were dashed after last night’s quarterfinal exit but the Swiss said his first event after two knee surgeries was just a “stepping stone” as he targeted full fitness for the grasscourt season.

Federer took the opening set against Nikoloz Basilas-hvili before the Georgian fought back to win 3-6 6-1 7-5, ending the 39-year-old Swiss’ challenge at the tournament, his first event in 14 months. Up 6-5 in the third set, Fed-erer earned a match point on Basilashvili’s serve but the Georgian saved it. Basilash-vili then broke Federer to re-cord a win over his idol.

“I’m actually happy that I was able to play back-to-back three-set matches against top players. That’s an important step forward to me,” Federer, who beat Dan Evans in the last-16, said. “Like I said, I’m not 100% yet. I can feel it, I can see it. From that stand-point, (what’s) important is to be 100% by the grasscourt season... I’m still building up. So this is a stepping stone. I’m actually happy how I felt on court overall.”

Federer initially eyed a re-turn at last month’s Austra-lian Open but slow progress in his recovery convinced him to skip it as he focuses at Wimbledon. Tied with Rafa Nadal on 20 Grand Slam wins, Federer has won Wim-bledon eight times. “We’ve just got to take a real good look at the schedule and... See how much workload the body and knee can still take, what’s the best way to prepare for basically the be-ginning of the season for me, which is the grasscourt sea-son,” he added.

Out of Dubai

Federer later announced the decision of pulling out of the upcoming ATP 500 event in Dubai.

“It’s been great to be back on the ATP Tour, loved every minute playing in Doha once again,” 20-times Grand Slam winner Federer said on so-cial media. “I’ve decided it’s best to go back to training and as a result, I’ve decided to withdraw from Dubai next week.”

West Indies beats sri Lanka by 5 wickets to win OdI series

North Point: A 192-run open-ing stand between Evin Lew-is and Shai Hope and cool finishing by Nicholas Pooran steered the West Indies to a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second one-day cricket international.

The West Indies also earned a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Lewis made 103 and Hope 84 to set the strong founda-tion that allowed the West In-dies to overtake Sri Lanka’s 273-8 with two balls to spare.

A middle order slump which saw the home side slip to 233-4 when captain Kieron Pollard was out in the 46th over put late pressure on the West Indies.

But Pooran made an un-beaten 35 from 38 balls to steer his team home in the final over in the West Indies’ highest successful ODI run chase against Sri Lanka.

The West Indies came to the 48th over needing 31 runs from 18 balls. Fabian Allen hit a six from the first ball from Nuwan Pradeep to eat into the deficit but was out next ball, leaving the match

still in the balance.Pooran hit a four from the

next delivery to ease some of the pressure on the home side and the West Indies was in a stronger position when Pradeep’s over conceded 18 runs, leaving 13 runs to be scored from the last 12 balls.

Dushmantha Chameera bowled a tight 49th over, con-ceding only four runs, and the West Indies came to the last over still needing nine runs to win. The first ball was a dot ball but Pooran went down on one knee to strike a superb cover drive for four from Pradeep’s second ball, putting the West Indies five runs from victory.

Pradeep bowled a full toss which Pooran sliced behind point for four, and another full toss which the batsman chipped into the leg side for the winning run.

“You could say (it was too close for comfort),” Pollard said. “But at the end of the day we take the win. The guys batted well.

“Evin scored a hundred and in the dressing room we asked him for a hundred. It

was nice to see Pooran finish-ing off the game and it was a total team effort.”

Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss and slumped to 50-3 in the ninth over.

Danushka Gunathilaka’s luck turned and his 96 from 96 balls led Sri Lanka’s re-covery. Gunathilaka seemed to have been wronged when he was given out for obstruct-ing the field in the first ODI which the West Indies won by eight wickets.

He batted superbly on Fri-day, re-establishing the Sri Lanka innings in a partner-ship of exactly 100 for the fourth wicket with Dinesh Chandimal, who made 71.

A quick-fire innings of 47 from 31 balls by Winandu Hasaranga lifted Sri Lanka to a competitive total.

“In our batting, we lost a couple of wickets in the ear-ly part but we recovered,” Sri Lanka captain Dinush Karunaratne said.

“Unfortunately those two batsmen who got runs today couldn’t go on to a big one.”

Sharjeel, Hafeez recalled for T20s; Zahid, Shahnawaz in Test teamLAHORE: Attacking open-er Sharjeel Khan and veter-an all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez were recalled to the Twenty20 team while former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was picked for all three formats as chief selector Mohammad Wasim on Friday anno unced Pakistan squads for the forth-coming tour to South Africa and Zimbabwe starting from March 26.

Leg-spinning all-rounder Shadab Khan was included in the ODI and T20 squads as vice-captain.

Left-handed Sharjeel, who has returned to the national duty after a gap of four years, was suspended by the PCB for spot-fixing in the 2017 Paki-stan Super League in August the same year for five years. Two and a half years of the

sentence were suspended.The 31-year-old batsman,

who was in fine form in this year’s PSL, played the last of his 25 ODIs in January 2017 and has also played one Test and 15 T20 Internationals.

Hafeez, 40, was not part of the Pakistan T20 squad which beat South Africa at home 2-1 recently because he was not ready to remain in a bio-se-cure bubble after returning from the UAE where he was playing in the T10 league.

There have been question marks over Sharjeel’s phys-ical fitness who returned to domestic cricket after an-nouncing a public apology in August 2019. However, Wasim played down that fac-tor.

Uncapped Abdullah Shafiq named in ODI, Test squads

for Africa tour “Sharjeel has the ability to win matches for Pakistan and he deserves an opportunity to further improve his fitness,” Wasim said after he announced the squads during a presser at the Gaddafi Stadium.

“For me only fitness level is not the criteria to select a player; the player’s current form irrespective of his age and seniority are equally important for selection. Al-

though he [Sharjeel] is not exactly where we want him to be, he is not too far away,” the chief selector said.

Surprisingly however, in case of Shan Masood, the se-lectors have acted unfairly by overlooking him for the Zimbabwe Tests, keeping his overall record in view.

Though left-handed Shan had a forgettable tour of New Zealand in December, where he could not score in the Test matches, he is still among the best openers in the country and someone who has proved his credentials against fast bowling as well as spin.

Despite the New Zealand tour flop and being over-looked for the South Africa home Tests, Shan still ranks second behind skipper Babar Azam in Test run aggregate

in the period from 2018 to 2021, scoring over 800 runs in 11 matches at an impressive average of 42 with three hun-dreds and as many fifties to his name.

None of ther openers in-cluding Abid Ali, Imran Butt, Fakhar Zaman and others have been able to match Shan’s prowess with the bat in Tests and the tall opener certainly deserved a chance on the African Safari.

Equally puzzling is the in-clusion of top-order batsman Abdullah Shafiq in the Test and ODI squads. The 21-year-old right hander so far has featured in only one first-class match in 2019 in which he scored a century while representing Central Pun-jab, and has played his only List-A game earlier this year.

damien Wright appointed Punjab Kings bowling coachNew Delhi: For Tasmania all-rounder Damien Wright will join Punjab Kings as bowling coach ahead of IPL 2021, the franchise has an-nounced. Wright, who fea-tured in 123 first-class and 106 List A games, will join head coach Anil Kumble, as-sistant coach Andy Flower, batting coach Wasim Jaffer and fielding coach Jonty Rhodes in Punjab's back-room staff.

Wright has had stints with Hobart Hurricanes and the Melbourne Stars and has coaching experience in New Zealand and Bangladesh as well. He was appointed the

head coach of the Bangla-desh Under-19 side in 2018 and has also served as New Zealand's bowling coach.

The former Worcester-shire player takes over from Charl Langeveldt as the Kings aim to end their bar-ren run in IPL. They start their campaign against Ra-jasthan Royals in Mumbai on April 12 and will play three games at the Wank-hede Stadium.

The KL Rahul-led side will then play two games in Ahmedabad and four in Chennai before ending their league stage with a five-match run in Bengaluru.
