Letter from

The Head of SchoolDear High Point Christian Academy Friends,

What an inspiring year at High Point Christian Academy! We have seen this past year how God has worked in the lives of our students, families, faculty and staff, alumni, and community supporters and we are excited to be a part of what He is doing. Our mission each day remains the same: to provide Christ-centered, quality education and academic excellence in partnership with family and the church within a loving caring atmosphere.

High Point Christian Academy’s outstanding program starts with our faculty, who do a great job of teaching in such a way that not only the minds of our students are impacted, but also their hearts and lives. Each day students are challenged toward excellence in all areas of their lives – academically, spiritually, physically, and socially.

Kingdom Education allows students to develop a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and prepares our students to see the world from God’s perspective and to use their talents and abilities to serve and honor the Lord in their lives.

As you review the pages of this magazine, I hope you will see how God has played a vital role in our school’s accomplishments. I hope you will see how biblical integration is accomplished in the classrooms, on the fields, throughout fine arts and during extracurricular activities.

We at High Point Christian Academy are thankful that you have entrusted us with the education of your children. Thank you for serving as our partners over this past year and we look forward to what 2019-2020 has in store for our HPCA family!

In Christ’s Service,

6Serving Others Through biblical-integration, students are able to achieve high levels of academic success, while learning the importance of serving others throughout our school, in our community and across the globe.

16Making an Impact On and Off the Field Through their hard work, God-given talents and perseverance, our student athletes win team and individual State Championships! However, what is even

more important, is that our student athletes participate in service projects with their teammates, learning the true meaning of putting others first, both on and off the field.

23Our Biggest Cheerleaders!Partnering with parents is included within the mission statement of HPCA for a reason... we need you! We need our families and alumni to volunteer, donate their time, support and pray for our school each and everyday! That is what makes our school so special, not the building, but the caring and loving hearts that fill our halls each day.

Our High Point Christian Academy Preschool touches the hearts and minds of over 80 precious little ones each week. With our students ranging in age from 18 months to four-years-old, each preschool teacher demonstrates the love of Jesus in a loving, caring environment. The teachers, while being academically trained in early childhood education, know that these little minds need to learn through play. These teachers plan their day with activities ranging from using manipulatives to develop their fine motor skills to reading, circle time, Bible time, and a variety of other fundamental learning activities. Once our students graduate from this preschool program they are prepared to transition successfully directly into HPCA.

Over this past year, our students have been able to take field trips to various places such as High Point Gymnastics, the pumpkin patch, and Ingram’s Strawberry Fields. Each class is able to attend special chapel sessions twice per month. These chapels teach them about God and His love for us and how to share His love with others. Our four-year-old students are even able to attend music, media and art sessions each week, along with special Cougar Cub lunches.

We are thankful for the smiles and hugs we receive each day in the HPCA Preschool.

“This year has been an amazing year in our preschool. What a joy to have teachers who love their preschoolers and preschoolers who love coming to school. It has been our pleasure to nurture these students this year and watch them grow. Our prayer

is that they continue to learn about Jesus and know how much He loves

them even more than we do.”

Elementary SchoolEvery class is taught from a biblical perspective. Students are trained to see the world through the eyes of Christ. Every grade level participates in a mission’s project which included the following servant minded projects this year: TK and Kindergarten – Held a “needs” drive for school-aged children this

winter. These students live in our community and go to school hungry, cold and without necessary clothing. Items collected included toboggans, gloves, scarves, socks, underwear, pajamas, toys, games and books.

First Grade – Sang to elderly residents at River Landing

Second Grade – Read to peers at Northwood Elementary School

Third Grade – Students held a bake sale and attended a special chapel focusing on the need to share the love of Jesus to children in Kenya through the Bright Star Academy.

Fourth Grade – “Love for Ethiopia” - Hosted a Bake Sale and attended a workshop to learn and visualize the Ethiopian culture

Fifth Grade – Fifth graders used their gifts and talents to bless nursing home residents. Our students created colorful artwork, made bookmarks, put together goodie bags, and wrote letters to be given to senior citizens. Most importantly, we prayed that the residents will know we care for them and God loves them!

Over the past year, our Elementary students have been able to plan, lead and participate in several unique activities and programs.

HPCA hosted the District Spelling Bee which consisted of many students representing our school at this level.

The Robotics Club attracts many fourth through eighth grade students. In addition to the Faculty advisor, the Club is supported by high school students with previous robotics experience.

Code Club is led by high school programming students integrating service with their senior KIP Project.

Bel Canto includes fourth and fifth grade girls and boys who practice their singing after school. This group performs several times throughout the year and concludes the year during a special performance at Carowinds.

GO FAR (Go Out For A Run)® Club is an eight to ten-week comprehensive fitness program designed to teach children of all abilities about healthy eating, goal setting, and how to train to walk/run a 5K.

At Faith Builders LEGO Club, first through fifth graders have lots of creative fun building with LEGOs. Most importantly, they spend time discussing and memorizing verses about building their lives on Christ. The children earn LEGO sets for the verses they memorize.

Operation Christmas Child gives our students the chance to serve others and make the Christmas season special by collecting and filling shoe-boxes for kids across the globe.

As a culminating activity in science, HPCA fifth graders participated in our annual Measurement Olympics. Students dressed in red, white and blue while moving from station to station measuring matter. Stations included Long Jump, Javelin Blow, Boat Race, Shuttle Run, and Snack Attack. At each station, students practiced measuring length, mass, time, and distance.

Middle School“This past year has reminded me why I come to work each day. I

have been able to reflect on what Kingdom Education really means

and the important part our teachers play in the spiritual growth of our

students. We have had several students accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. We have had numerous students and parents confess their hearts to Jesus and get baptized. The family-like atmosphere is one

of encouragement, love, grace and support. I am thankful each

day to work with our students, our teachers, and our families.”

MR. SCOTT PROHASKA, ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

The HPCA Middle School division mentors, guides, and challenges our sixth through eighth graders both academically and spiritually. Our Middle School teachers provide an unwavering academic program that instills knowledge that will guide them into their high school career.

As part of the Academy’s Life of Influence program, each middle school student completes a Servant’s Heart project. Students focus on serving others in their own home, their extended family, and their community. A few examples of the Servant’s Heart Project include:

Assisting a widowed neighbor with yardwork, making sugar free treats for a diabetic neighbor and reading the Bible and playing the piano for a 101-year-old great grandmother.

Organizing bookshelves and cleaning recreation room for High Point LEAP, packing loaves of bread at Out of the Garden for poverty stricken families, and volunteering at a Loving Pet Inn Adoptions fundraiser.

Volunteering for Awana at Green Street Baptist Church, making a meal for neighbors, cleaning out the family basement, and tutoring a friend in algebra.

Merriwood Eighth Grade Retreat

The eighth graders annually attend Camp Merriwood for a leadership retreat. These students are divided into small groups to work on unity, problem-solving, and team building skills. In addition, these students had fun on the water, rock climbing, and enjoying meal time. They all worked together to dive deeper into their spiritual relationships with God during this fun and eventful retreat.

Reading Buddies

Middle school students have the opportunity to partner with kindergarten students as “Reading Buddies” throughout the year. This benefits the little ones as they hear stories read aloud with fluency and expression and as they build relationships with older students. This program benefits our middle school students as they develop responsibility and read-aloud skills. They also experience more self-confidence as their buddies look up to them as role models.

Eighth Grade Washington D.C. Trip

The D.C. trip truly encapsulates the past, present, and the future. We see the labors and sacrifices of those who have gone before us, blazing the trail of freedom, and self-government that we are all blessed to enjoy today. It all serves to give us a sense of something much bigger than ourselves, while at the same time, one in which we are each required to play a part. Many students gain a sense of God’s providence and guidance in their own lives as we make this annual trip.

We have an outstanding high school program that is committed to working in partnership with family, excelling in academics, and teaching our students to view life through a biblical perspective.

Our academic program is excellent. All of our high school teachers are committed Christians with credentials to teach their subject areas. We offer three different levels of courses – College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP). All three levels of courses are designed to prepare our students for the academic rigor of college. Not only do our teachers teach students their subjects effectively, but more importantly they love their students and understand the importance of building lasting relationships!

Our 60 2019 seniors were accepted into over 75 colleges and universities with over 4.3 million dollars offered in scholarships.

Our Valley Lunch service allows all classes to eat together each day. The Cougar Den provides a unique coffee shop atmosphere for our students during morning break, study halls and as an upper class privilege for lunch.

Spirit week was updated with a change from hallway decorations to a parade of floats. This brought in a festive Thursday evening event inside of the Refuge Gym where all classes were completing floats and bonding in a relaxed atmosphere.

“Empty hallways in summer provide time to reflect on our recently

concluded 2018-2019 school year. This school is embodied by the

students and families in the same way that the church is made up of followers of Christ. HPCA is

May our blue, green and white school colors grow in your hearts as we prepare to return in August and reignite the Cougar spirit; allowing

Four high school seniors received perfect scores on SAT and ACT sub scores.

This year, HPCA was home to 11 international students representing Brazil, China, Germany, and South Korea.

Monthly International Club meetings are held for both international and domestic students. The purpose of the club is to provide cultural awareness and diversity for our students and to tangibly support our international students. This club focuses on making students aware and appreciative of other places and people groups outside of their city, state, and even country as well as demonstrating that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not only for our country or even western culture in general, but for all people groups in the world.

12 ACADEMICS HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

High School at HPCA is made up of much more than classes, fine arts and sports. Our students have the opportunity to participate in various clubs and extracurricular activities that give them knowledge and insight outside of the classroom.

Science National Honor Society is an academic, nationwide honor society focused on science for high school students within the United States with the goal of engaging young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America. Our Science NHS members use their science studies to better understand how the world around them works and to see God’s design and character in His creation.

Interact Club is an international service organization for high schoolers that is sponsored by a local Rotary Club. They help within their community and around the world by serving others that are in need.

The High School Student Government provides mutually beneficial communication between students, faculty, and administration on campus, creating a supportive, spiritual, professional, educational, and social environment. HSSG supports school events for students; represents students’ concerns to the administration for a permanent resolution; encourages personal responsibility among high school students towards building their campus community; and exemplifies a positive standard for students on our campus.

Students who enroll in Mock Trial will prepare to play the roles of attorney, witness, bailiff/timekeeper, and or alternate. These students spend their time analyzing competition court cases as well as learning and practicing courtroom procedures with the help of a teacher coach and attorney advisor.

The Life of Influence Project is a 30 hour service and advocacy project required of all seniors at HPCA. Ideally, students identify their unique, God-given passion and then develop a project in which they meet the needs of others in the community while influencing them for Christ. Life of Influence Projects vary widely: from short-term mission trips to unique fund-raising efforts for ministry in church and community.

Pastor Jeff has a mission to connect with students in a way that will lead them to Christ, build them up in Christ, and equip them to serve Christ for the good of others and for the glory of God.

Over the past year, Student Life at HPCA has touched the lives of our students in various ways:

Revamped Bible I class in order to focus more on the Gospel and reading of scripture.

Formation of a Costa Rica mission team where 13 HPCA students and six chaperones raised over $7,000 to send native children to a Christ-focused camp and served for 11 days on the mission field.

Offered more variety during middle and high school chapel, giving students a variety of ways to connect, worship, and praise Jesus.

Organized an HPCA Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter with the goal of helping to bring athletes and coaches into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Connected with Green Street Baptist Church and Student Pastor, Blythe Wall, on student driven initiatives.

When high school students return to campus this fall, The Loft, previously the Media Center, will be transformed into both an academic and community space for our students. Students will have access to a number of different amenities to enjoy with their classmates within The Loft, such as study space, board games, air hockey, and gaming consoles.

14 STUDENT LIFE HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Student Life“This past year, God has revealed

to me a need to focus on two areas of our students’ lives in order to

help them follow Jesus more closely. First, encouraging students to

ask questions so that their faith in Jesus becomes their own - not their parents’, teachers’, or pastors’, and

second, encouraging students to step outside of their comfort zones (home, school, community) so that they can truly see the various ways and places that Jesus is working.”

The fine arts department at HPCA is blessed to have a broad range of artistic offerings for its students, all led by caring and qualified teachers. Elementary school students work in the areas of art and music throughout the school day. At this level of instruction, young artists learn the basics of each discipline and of performing music. In middle school, students have the opportunity to choose which area of focus they would like to devote their time to: art, band or choir. Continuing their experience in high school, opportunities include art shows, music festivals, competitions, concerts and community performances.

Grandparents and Grand-friends Day

High Point Christian Academy values our families, who are true partners in the education of each student. This year, we held special Grandparents’ Day celebrations for both our elementary students and for the first time, for our middle and high school students.

We appreciate the support and commitment that our grandparents and grand-friends make in being involved in the lives of our students. These individuals are there during drop off and pick up, they serve as an extra set of hands for our parents, and they certainly shower our students with love and prayer.

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.

HPCA Fan ClubThroughout the year our families spend countless hours giving of their time, talents, and gracious hearts to make our school the best place it can be. The time that is spent volunteering at sporting events, spelling bee competitions, festivals, testing, and much more to the commitment of showering teachers with appreciation throughout the year is inspiring. These volunteers are the heart and soul of our school and we greatly appreciate each and every one of them!

This year, parent led groups, such as Booster Club and Parent Teacher Fellowship planned, organized and led events such as Cougar Fest, spaghetti dinners, candy heart grams, provided lunches, recognized teachers, volunteered in classrooms and at school events, led committees, and so much more!

Our All Pro Dads and Moms in Prayer continue to provide prayerful support for our students and our faculty throughout the year. These group meet to provide fellowship, mentorship and a great sense of community.

As the years progress, our students graduate and join our over 760 Alumni. We encourage and enjoy seeing our alumni back on campus at career days, sporting events, art shows and those who just want to come back to say “hello!”

“HPCA has prepared me for my future by giving me the foundation for what I need to know to believe

in myself, but also to follow my dreams and never give up.”
