Acted for PT Barito Pacific Tbk in its US$755 million acquisition of a 66.67% interest in local geothermal power producer Star Energy Group Holdings Pte. Ltd.

Acted for Cambodia’s Indobest Group Co., Ltd in a dispute over exclusive distributorship rights over cigarettes brands against Japan Tobacco Inc (JTI), and successfully obtained, inter alia, an injunction to cease unlawful import of the covered brands into Cambodia.

PT Freeport runs one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines in Papua province, Indonesia.

Launch of Rajah & Tann Technologies

Rajah & Tann Technologies was launched at South East Asia’s first legaltech accelerator in April 2018, offering technology-enabled legal solutions including e-discovery, cybersecurity, data breach readiness and response, and other legaltech and regulatory technology services, to clients and member firms of the Rajah & Tann Asia network.

First legal chatbot launched in Indonesia

Leading Indonesian regulatory technology company, Hukumonline, whose founders include Ahmad Fikri Assegaf and Ibrahim Sjarief Assegaf of Indonesia member firm, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, has launched the first legal chatbot in Indonesia called Legal Intelligent Assistant which allows users to find quick and basic answers to Indonesian family law queries.

First of its kind data breach simulation exercise service

We are now able to enter into the fast-growing financial crime investigation markets with our multidisciplinary expertise in the respective laws, forensic technology investigation and e-discovery project management.

First e-discovery certification launched in Asia

Rajah & Tann Technologies and SAL Ventures, a subsidiary of the Singapore Academy of Law, have agreed to launch a certification programme for e-discovery management. The programme is a part-time continuing education course for those who wish to be trained to use legaltech tools to conduct discovery.

First Disaster-Risk Insurance Program in Asia: Southeast Asia Disaster Risk Insurance Facility (SEADRIF)

Rajah & Tann is involved in The World Bank’s establishment of SEADRIF, announced announced on 4th May 2018 at the 21st ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governers’ Meeting in Manila, which aims to provide member countries of ASEAN with insurance solutions for loss and damage caused by natural catastrophes and climate-related disasters.

Go Southeast Asia Award is an undergraduate recruitment platform that helps to bridge the intention by Singapore companies to develop more regional talent, with the international career aspirations of young Singaporean undergraduates. On 1 March 2018, Indonesia became the first country ever to issue a green sukuk bond, structured as a five-year, US dollar-denominated sukuk bond of US$1.25 billion. We assisted the Indonesia government in the transaction. The government will allocate the proceeds of the bonds to climate and/or environment-related projects, including renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste management, green engineering

and green buildings.

Asia’s First Corporate Sustainability Bond

We acted for PT Royal Lestari Utama in an inaugural US$95 million landmark financing from TLFF, to help finance a sustainable rubber plantation. TLFF is a partnership between ADM Capital/ADM Capital Foundation, BNP Paribas, UN Environment and World Agroforestry Centre to provide access to long-term finance at scale to commercial projects with clear environmental and

social benefit.

World’s First Green Sukuk

We advised Tadau Energy Sdn Bhd as the issuer under its RM250 million Green Sustainable Responsible Investment (SRI) syariah-compliant bond, which is the

world’s first green sukuk.

This project won two coveted awards, ”New Products Broadening The Market – Green Sukuk” and ”New Countries Taking Green Bonds Global – Malaysia” categories at the Climate Bonds Initiative’s Annual Green Bond Pioneer

Awards 2018 in London.

Star Energy Geothermal’s US$580 million Green Bonds

We advised Star Energy Geothermal (Wayang Windu) Limited in its issue of US$580 million Senior Secured Notes which have been labelled as ‘Green’ and recognised by Carbon Trust Assurance Limited, London as being compliant with

the Green Bond Principles.

The Company’s Wayang Windu geothermal energy generation facility in West Java, is also recognised as an eligible Green Project by Carbon Trust

Neste’s EUR 1.4 Billion Investment in Renewable

Product

We advised Neste Singapore on its investment decision on additional renewable products production capacity in Singapore. In addition to producing renewable diesel, all Neste’s renewable product refineries are able to produce renewable aviation fuel and raw materials for various polymers

and chemicals materials.

Biggest Solar Power Project in Malaysia

We advised Scatec Solar ASA, a Norwegian public listed company, on its entry into Malaysia and investment in the project. Scatec Solar is the major equity investor in the project and brings with it all the key expertise (technical & financial) required for what is to date the biggest solar power

project in Malaysia.

Indonesia’s First Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Plants

We advised The Asian Development Bank in a project financing transaction for the development of a 15 MW solar farm in Likupang, North Sulawesi, and three solar farms located in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, each with a capacity of 5 MW. This project won Solar Project of the Year 2018 from

The ASEAN Conference 2018: Shaping ASEAN’s Future brought together prominent experts from some of ASEAN’s leading businesses to discuss insights and strategies on technological and digital innovation shaping the future.

The sixth annual Rajah & Tann Asia Regional Competition Conference explored issues surrounding data-mining and data-transfers and the best ways of applying existing competition principles. The panel sessions looked at issues from different country perspectives, giving attendees a regional look at pertinent competition law issues in one sitting.

The ASEAN Law Conference explored the harmonising of laws and policies in ASEAN in light of the greater convergence between economies in the region. Deputy Managing Partner Patrick Ang (Singapore), and Partners Francis Xavier (Singapore), Supawat Srirungruang (Thailand) and Nattarat Boonyatap (Thailand) spoke at the event.

Rajah & Tann Asia organised a seminar to provide an overview of the regulatory framework of the Philippines, and how typical legal issues may be addressed with proper structuring and legal advice. Speakers included Joseph Del Mar Yap, The Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Singapore, Chew Hwee Yong, Deputy Director at International Enterprise Singapore and Partners of C&G Law.

Christopher & Lee Ong held their annual CSR Breakfast in support of the Childhood Cancer Caring Society of KL (CARES). CARES is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation which provides support to children facing various types of childhood cancer. The event is a “pay as you feel” buffet with all proceeds donated to CARES.

In addition to the firm award, Senior Associate, Simon Barie Sasmoyo from Assegaf Hamzah & Partners also won ”Lawyer with Remarkable Pro Bono Hours” at the Hukumonline Award For Excellent Pro Bono Hours 2018

Members of Rajah & Tann Singapore accompanied 50 children from the Wishing Well on their learning excursion to Madame Tussauds. Wishing Well is a non-profit organisation which provides services for children from low-income families.Their goal is to support the educational and daily living needs of such children and equip them with skills for their future.

Members of Rajah & Tann Singapore and their families worked alongside the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) to pack bags of dry goods for needy Toa Payoh residents. This was part of YWCA’s island-wide dry rations distribution programme which targets low and middle-income families who do not receive public assistance.

During the month of Ramadan, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners invited a group of 30 orphans for ‘Buka Puasa’ or to break fast together. The children enjoyed games, role plays and photo taking with members of the firm.

Volunteers from Rajah & Tann Singapore helped out at the Willing Hearts soup kitchen by preparing meals for the needy and underprivileged in Singapore. Willing Hearts is a charity that is wholly-run by volunteers. Through its soup kitchen, it provides daily meals to its beneficiaries.

Rajah & Tann Asia continues to support non profit organisations in our festive greetings. In 2018, we supported ANGSANAcare, which provides play, art and music therapy to children with life limiting or life threatening diseases.

In 2018, Indonesia was hit by a series of devastating natural disasters. In response, members of Assegaf Hamzah & Partners donated food, clothes, medicine and money to aid the victims affected by the tsunami in Banten and Lombok, as well as the earthquakes in Lombok and Palu.
