The Love Course serves as the venue for the Summer Solstice Tournament

The course was built on one of the largest rice plantations in Georgetown County with the original land mass stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the rice fields on the edge of the Waccamaw River. When driving down the entrance to the Clubhouse through the impressive wall of 150 year old live oaks on both sides of the road, one can imagine the rich history of the agricultural past and more recent use of the land as a hunting and fishing refuge.

Although only 6,526 yards long, short by today’s standards, the par 70 layout presents a fair challenge to any level golfer. Architect Mike Strantz certainly had some of the most beautiful property on the Grand

Strand with which to work. The course has been described as having “18 signature holes,” with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. The picturesque 18th hole borders the Plantation’s old rice field, and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green that is bordered by the antebellum style clubhouse.

We hope you are enjoying the summer weather at Barefoot and getting out to play on our courses. We are in the middle of our summer aerification period and have completed the Fazio and Dye courses at this time. The Norman course is being done from 7/11-7/14 and the Love course is scheduled for 7/25- 7/28. In addition to our annual aerification, we have several other projects that are underway or nearing completion. We are continuing to add brick pavers in several locations on the courses in walk up areas that receive a lot of foot traffic. We are also working on the improvement of several greenside bunkers that need work including drainage and composition. As many of you know, we have been working on cart path repair on all of the resort courses for two years now and have made great progress on them. Even though this specific area will need continued work in the years to come we are near completion with many of the problem areas. We also plan to overseed the golf courses again this Fall in October and I will share the specifics with you in our next member newsletter.

Regards,John Hughes,

Head Golf Course SuperintendentGreen aerification

September 4. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for each day of the tourney. Flight assignments will be made based on 80% of the combined team handicaps.
