Music in the “20th Century

Last week we had a look at different types and styles of Rock music This week we are going to look specifically at the Beatles and two tracks from the Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club.

• Write out the above heading and following information at the back of your book or on file paper.

• Formed in Liverpool in 1960.

• Consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

• All of the Beatles composed songs, however the key songwriters were Lennon and McCartney.

• They are the biggest selling artists of all time with over 600 million records.

• The Beatles stopped touring in 1966 as the busy schedule was taking its toll and the band was receiving numerous death threats while in the United States.

• Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was the first album to be recorded after they stopped touring.

• The name of the album is the name of the fictional band that the Beatles used as their alter ego – pretending to be someone else gave them the chance to experiment with different styles of music.

• This allowed them to create a concept album – the idea was that the whole album was a live performance so should be played in one go.

• This idea was reinforced by features such as the noises of an orchestra tuning up before the start of the first track and audience applause during the song.

• The overall genre of the album is Psychedelic Rock.

‘With a Little Help from My Friends’

Background Information • Written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney for Ringo Starr to sing.

• It is the second track on the album. The tracks have been cross-faded together (where one track merges into the next) with pre-recorded applause.

• Ringo Starr sings it in the character of Billy Shears, his alter ego in the fictional band.

• The melody has quite a limited range and is generally conjuct

(moving in step).

With a Little Help from My Friends

Answers

1) Write down all the instruments you can hear in this piece. • electric guitar • bass guitar • drum kit • cowbell 2) How can you describe the rhythms in the vocals? The quavers are played in a swung style (like in Jazz). Syncopation features a lot as well.

Swung quavers should be played with the first one slightly longer the second one (even though they look the same!)

When this is required, this is usually shown at the start:

• piano • (electric) organ • tambourine • vocals

Keyboard Piece

We are going to have a go at learning the piece you have just listened to on the keyboard.

This week look at the first two lines (which are the same). The first slide has a copy with the notes if you need them and the second version has the words to help you get the rhythms correct. There are no black notes or unusual notes so hopefully you wont find it too hard.

‘Within You Without You’ by the Beatles

This is an unusual piece that is number 8 on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Album

• It was written by George Harrison who sang lead vocals and played the guitar, sitar and tanpura.

• None of the other Beatles were involved in this track.

• Harrison was inspired by Indian classical music – he’d taken sitar lessons with the famous sitar player Ravi Shankar. This track has many Indian influences.

• The song has a mournful feel and sounds a bit like a chant.
