YEAR 9 EXTENDED LEARNING TASK Five Cars That Changed The
World
Slide 2
Use this PowerPoint and internet research to help you select
five cars that you think made a significant contribution to car
design. The cars you choose cannot be simply ones that you like, of
ones that you think are cool or good to look at. They need to have
changed the way that designers have approached car design. Think
about design, safety, engine, what the car symbolizes and
affordability to the masses.
Slide 3
Task Produce a PowerPoint presentation (that you will present
to the class) which shows your five chosen cars and explains their
significance and your opinion. Should be 5 pages long Feel free to
discuss your choices with your teacher beforehand.

The Volvo Amazon: The first production car to feature a number
of safety features that we take for granted today: Laminated
windscreen Padded dashboard Three-point seatbelts as standard The
Amazon changed the way car manufacturers considered safety and
established Volvos reputation as manufacturer of the worlds safest
cars. Volvo patented their design of seatbelt, but allowed other
manufacturers to use it free of charge. Amazons are among the cars
which have covered record- breaking distances, some having covered
over one and a half million miles.

What to do next: Speak to your teacher about your choices of
Cars That Changed The World. Find suitable photos showing the cars.
Think about what it is about the design of the cars that makes them
so important Produce a PowerPoint that looks good and you will be
happy to show to the class. If you get stuck ask family and friend
(mainly adult) their opinion and use the internet (what does Top
Gear have to say?)
