IMCC Newsletter 37 Friday, 25 th November 2016 Year 9 Camino Camp “My experience on camp is something I’ll never forget”. This heartfelt comment made at the Return Ceremony by Remi Johnstone sums up what so many staff and students felt when they returned from the week-long Camp on Friday, 18 th November. Seeing the huge crowd of expectant and loving parents when we returned was highly emotional and so affirming to the young men and women in Year 9. “Throughout the week, we challenged ourselves both mentally and physically; I was reflecting about how lucky I am to live a life where I can go to places as beautiful as this and ride in the rain; I found a lot of peace in the quiet of the circle when someone was talking; we learned that it is okay to cry and be more open-minded; when everyone had showed their respect he quietly left the big circle around the fire”. Comments from Remi Johnstone and Alex Hardy about the Camp. It is difficult to fully share the life-changing experiences of the Camp, but the Return Ceremony helped parents participate in the energetic and vital experience of the Camp. The feedback from parents after the Return Ceremony was all about the continuation of students sharing their dreams and hopes, their concerns and yearnings for the future at home. This information filled me and other staff with such joy and affirmation of the importance of communicating and listening openly without judgment. Our world is full of uncertainty at times and to know that the ‘Coming of Age’ ritual is still such a vital part of human growth and such a strong affirmation of our College community. We are so grateful to Mr Bright and Ms Lewy for the months of planning and preparation for the Camino Camp. A huge thank you to all the giving and supporting teachers who led the student groups or ensured we were all fed, watered and supported. The gratitude continues to all the teachers at the College who led and supported the Return Ceremony. Most of all thank you to the enthusiastic and amazing Year 9 students and their parents for supporting the Camino Camp with such openness and acceptance.

Year 7 Soccer Academy meet Perth Glory stars On Thursday, 10th November, the Year 7 Soccer Academy students were privileged to watch a Perth Glory training session. We arrived at the UWA Sports Park ready for the 9.15am training session and were greeted by Perth Glory Club Officials and an Edith Cowan University representative. The students witnessed how a professional soccer team warms up prior to commencing their training. Perth Glory then went through their ball skills, working on their first touch, before splitting into their three positions and engaging in a competitive drill. They finished with a game, focussing on the aspects they would bring into their match on the weekend. While this was occurring, the students had to draw and describe each of the drills and what it was trying to achieve. Once training had finished, several of the Perth Glory players came across to meet the students, shake their hands and have a photo with the class. The students were then able to train on the same pitch that Perth Glory had just trained on. After lunch, we stopped at City Beach for some beach runs, games of beach soccer and a swim in the freezing cold ocean.

5-a-side Soccer Competition – the Finals begin! With the group fixtures complete, the knockout phase has begun and last week’s matches confirmed our four semi-finalists, following competitive games on a very warm afternoon. Despite failing to win their group and suffering their first defeat ever, last year’s victors, the Slav Squad, progressed and they will play Year 8 outfit Petr Cech Yourself for a place in the Grand Final. Some consolation for Will Basson, whose team MAMUFC lost their quarterfinal, is that he currently sits in equal fourth place on the top goal-scorers list. Meanwhile, staff team Los Maestros participated in a mammoth penalty shoot-out after their quarterfinal was deadlocked at a goal apiece. Year 11 outfit Oreos held their nerve, converting the 12th penalty of the shoot-out. Year 10 team Quinniex, who are looking favourites for this year’s competition, easily saw off their younger opposition to maintain their 100% winning record so far this year and complete the semi-finals line-up. QUARTERFINALS SEMI-FINALS GRAND FINAL Slav Squad (5) v Shark Fin Soup (3) Petr Cech Yourself (3) v MAMUFC (1) OG’s (1) v Quinniex (2) Los Maestros (1) v Oreos (1) (Oreos go through 4-3 on penalties)

This week witnessed the first semi-final and despite having a player advantage due to facing one of the senior sides, Petr Cech Yourself fell someway short as the Slav Squad made it into back-to-back Grand Finals. They must wait to see who their opponents will be in the showpiece finale, which promises to be a cracker! Top Scorers:

Fatman Scoop Visit

On Monday, 21st November selected classes enjoyed the rare opportunity to have a very special visit by International Hip Hop artist, Fatman Scoop, as a surprise performance at the College. Fatman Scoop was in Perth for the Australia tour of R&B Fridays Live held at NIB Stadium on Sunday, 20th November. Dance, Drama and Music students, as well as some PE classes, were treated to a Question and Answer session where Fatman Scoop talked about the music industry, how he got started, and the many artists that he has worked with over the years. Many of our students performed their music for our special visitor, including a Year 8 Specialist Music group who performed a piece they have been working on in class.

The afternoon was very exciting and students thoroughly enjoyed meeting an international artist at the College. A very big thank you to Mrs Carol Green who organised the event through her nephew Chris, Fatman Scoop’s Manager. Miss Kylie Malam Head of Performing Arts

Parent Group Whether your children are just starting in Year 7 or entering the final year of high school, there are many good reasons for parents to volunteer at Irene McCormack Catholic College. It's a great way to show your children that you take an interest in their education and it sends a positive message that you consider school a worthwhile cause. Reasons to Get Involved Parent volunteers offer a huge resource and support base for the College community while showing your children the importance of participating in the larger community. By interacting with teachers, administrators and other parents on a regular basis, you will gain a firsthand understanding of your children’s daily activities. This connection also enables you to become aware of trends of school life that can help you communicate with your children as they grow and change, all without intruding on their privacy or personal space. One of the best starting points for getting involved is the Parent Group. This group of individuals meet once every eight weeks to discuss an array of educative matters. The next meeting will take place in February 2017. If you are interested in joining the group, kindly contact Ms Bonfiglio, Deputy Principal, at the College. Ms Nancy Bonfiglio Deputy Principal
