Welcome to Mounts Bay Academy Year 9 Guided ChoicesIn March we received new guidelines from the Government concerning the qualifications which colleges and universities will recognise. These guidelines have removed restrictions previously announced in the Winter of 2010 and allowed some freedom in certain areas.Following these changes, we are adapting our KS4 curriculum offer by adding a number of new options for some students in the current Year 9.

We have been very pleased with the quality of Teaching and Learning taking place in the new three-year KS4 and the majority of our students will not wish to make any changes. Many of these students will be those who wish to proceed to college or university and will therefore continue with the English Baccalaureate (Ebac) route to include a language and a humanity. However, this Springʼs announcements mean that students wishing to move on to an apprenticeship or employment are no longer obliged to study all the Ebac subjects, although many may wish to continue doing so.

For the small number who may wish to consider a change, we have added a selection of alternative courses which are detailed within this booklet. Those students who may be interested will be guided by staff to ensure that their course choice is appropriate for them.

The following pages contain a advice on the alternative courses and the contact details of the staff delivering them should you wish to request more information. Your childʼs tutor and Director of Progress, Miss Osborne, are also available to offer personalised support.

Should your child be continuing with all of their current courses, please simply sign the card and return it to their tutor on Thursday 24th May at morning registration. For those considering a change, there will be a guided choices evening for students and parents on Thursday 24th May offering additional opportunities for consultation with staff. You will then be able to hand in your completed card following an individual discussion with your childʼs tutor or a member of the Senior Team.

Award in Sports Leadership The Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starting point for learners aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their leadership skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their Tutor/Assessor or other suitably qualified adult. The syllabus is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreational situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner. The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership is a practical qualification in which learners must demonstrate their ability to lead others in simple sport/activity. Age: 13+ (please note, there is no upper age limit for this qualification) Guided learning hours: 33 hours (including one hour demonstration of

leadership)

The qualification will take approximately 33 guided learning hours. However, various factors such as the learner/tutor ratio, the number of learners, and the experience levels of the learners will influence the time allocated to the delivery of any given course. Demonstration of Leadership In order for learners to complete their Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership they must complete one hour demonstration of leadership. This element of the qualification is part of Unit 1, however the one hour demonstration of leadership must happen at the end of the course, after all of the taught aspects have been delivered.!!!
