Writing a newspaper report

Headline: Make your headline short and snappy. Use exciting words, alliteration or rhymes

to catch the reader's attention. Your headline needs to tell the reader what kind of story it's

going to be. Usually only four or five words. It tries to attract the interest of the reader by

telling them what the story is about, in a short and interesting way.

First sentence: The first sentence underneath the headline should give the reader more

information on the story, and sum up what it is going to be about.

Introduction: It will set the scene and summarise the main points of the article: who, what,

when, where.

Paragraphs: Next, split your newspaper report up into paragraphs to help the reader clearly

understand the information on the story. Each new paragraph should be given a 'subheading'.

This is a very short title that tells the reader a little about what the paragraph is will about.

Past tense: Your newspaper story needs to be written in the past tense because you are

reporting on something that has already happened.

Third person: Write your newspaper reports in the 'third person' because you are writing

about somebody else. This means using the names of the people involved in the story or

using 'he' or 'she', not 'I' or 'me'. This makes you similar to a narrator, retelling events without

being involved in the story.

Quotations: Adding quotations will make your report more interesting for the reader because

it tells the story from the point of view of the people involved. Don't forget to use speech

marks! Sometimes articles will include what a person (like an eye-witness or an expert) has

said. These will be in speech marks.

Photos and captions: Use a photo/picture with a caption to give the reader more information

about the story you are writing. Sometimes articles have a photograph, and a sentence

explaining the photograph.

Facts and opinions: Fill your newspaper report with both facts and opinions. Facts give the

reader all of the information they need by using the 5 W's. Opinions give the point of view of

the writer or of people involved in the story. With all this information, the reader can then

make up their own point of view.

Summing up: Your final paragraph should sum up the story. This is usually a good place to

put in your opinion.

The circus came to town. Tickets were cheap. I decided to go with my friend. The clowns drove up

in a little car. There were a bunch of them. I didn’t think they would all fit. A guy stuck his head in

the lion’s mouth. Bears were dancing in tutus. An elephant rode a bike. A man with a whip was

beating the animals. The animals were sad. The man fed them a snack. I always have fun at the

circus. A lady was selling snacks. I bought popcorn and cotton candy. A family did tricks on the flying

trapeze. I took pictures. I thought one of them was going to fall. My belly hurt from eating junk. I

had a good time. The circus is always fun.

Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night;

What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies. Burnt the fire of thine eyes?

On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,

Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat,

What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain, In what furnace was thy brain?

What the anvil? what dread grasp, Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears

And water'd heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see?

Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright, In the forests of the night:

What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

TYGER

I remember the night my mother

was stung by a scorpion. Ten hours

of steady rain had driven him

to crawl beneath a sack of rice.

Parting with his poison - flash

of diabolic tail in the dark room -

he risked the rain again.

The peasants came like swarms of flies

and buzzed the name of God a hundred times

to paralyse the Evil One.

With candles and with lanterns

throwing giant scorpion shadows

on the mud-baked walls

they searched for him: he was not found.

They clicked their tongues.

With every movement that the scorpion made his poison

moved in Mother's blood, they said.

May he sit still, they said

May the sins of your previous birth

be burned away tonight, they said.

May your suffering decrease

the misfortunes of your next birth, they said.

May the sum of all evil

balanced in this unreal world

against the sum of good

become diminished by your pain.

May the poison purify your flesh

of desire, and your spirit of ambition,

they said, and they sat around

on the floor with my mother in the centre,

the peace of understanding on each face.

More candles, more lanterns, more neighbours,

more insects, and the endless rain.

My mother twisted through and through,

groaning on a mat.

My father, sceptic, rationalist,

trying every curse and blessing,

powder, mixture, herb and hybrid.

He even poured a little paraffin

upon the bitten toe and put a match to it.

I watched the flame feeding on my mother.

I watched the holy man perform his rites to tame the poison

with an incantation.

After twenty hours

it lost its sting.

My mother only said

Thank God the scorpion picked on me

And spared my children

The night of the scorpion
