iInformation

Autumn Independent Learning ChallengeIn this Learning Challenge you are going to produce 4 design sheets which visually explore faces either found in unusual places or faces collaged from every day images.

My Learning Objectives:

-To improve and develop my composition skills.

To understand how other artists have used abstract sections of photography in their own work.

-To learn about the different methods & techniques focusing on either digital image making or collage.

-To develop your own unique creative style and produce a series of design sheets which are personal to you based on a how you view what's around you.

If you need help or need to use our materials then you can come to Art club which takes

place every Wednesday with Mrs Foster 3.30 – 4.30pm

‘Faces in Places’Guidance for students:

You need to work regularly each week to complete this project by the hand in date given on the last slide of this PowerPoint.

Make sure you read through this PowerPoint presentation from start to finish before you begin!

Try to complete at least one task each week – DO NOT LEAVE IT ALL UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!!

Ask your Art teacher for help if your are unsure about any part of this ILC.

Your teacher will be checking your progress regularly over the term.

Guidance for parents:

The idea behind this independent learning challenge is to encourage pupils to work at home and develop independent learning skills outside of the classroom.

This project should take between 10 – 15 hours to complete.

Where possible Students should complete work by themselves with only guidance from parents.

Pupils will need a basic range of art equipment to complete the tasks in this ILC. Additional help and equipment are available to all pupils during the extra curricular art clubs held each week in school.

This project is based on a book called ‘Faces in

Places’ which was compiled by Jody Smith

Page 6: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

The book contains photographs of every day objects. The photographer

has carefully composed the pictures so that they

look like faces.

In year 8 you have looked at the ‘Formal Elements’ of

Art & Design. Can you remember what

‘composition’ means? How is it used in Photography?

?QUESTION?

Page 7: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

JUST FOR FUN…

Look carefully at the following slides. They showcase many

photographs of ‘Faces in Places.’

Can you work out which objects each of the photographs are taken

from?

Now its your turn…You will need to carry out either Task A or Task B to

complete your learning challenge! Don’t do both tasks, only choose ONE!

or

If you DO have access to a camera or mobile phone with a

camera then do Task A.

If you DON’T have access to a camera or mobile phone with a

camera then do Task B.

For this project you will need:

TASK A: A camera, 4 sheets of coloured A3 card, paper or mounting board, access to a printer at home or in school, scissors, glue and a pen. This task runs between slides 21 – 38.

TASK B: Newspapers & Magazines, 4 sheets of coloured A3 card, paper or mounting board, access to a printer at home or in school, scissors, glue and a pen. This task runs between slides 40 – 58.

Page 22: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Task A: Taking your photographs…

You will need to take as many pictures as you can of every day items which look like faces. Remember that you will need to compose your picture well so that your chosen object looks like a face. Aim to take several pictures, around 20. This will allow you to select the best images later on in the project.

Once you are happy with the pictures you have taken, down load them from your phone or camera to your computer.

Task A: Mounting Presentation Sheet 2

You now need to print out your four favourite photographs.

Using another of your 4 A3 sheets, mount your four photographs onto the background.

Also add the title ‘Analysing my Pictures’ as seen on the right.

Finally you need to analyse each of your four pictures then mount this writing next to each of your pictures. The next slide will explain how you analyse a picture.

This is an example only. You can choose to arrange the sheet differently if you wish.

Analysing your photographs…Use the sentence starters below to help you to analyse each of your four pictures.

The next slide shows an example of an analysed picture using the sentence starters below…

6.

a) In this picture I can see…Describe exactly what you can see. Don’t worry if it seems obvious – in fact the more obvious the better. You need to do this before going on to the more difficult statements below!b) In the background there is…The atmosphere of a picture is often set by the background – whether a landscape or an abstract composition.c) In the middle distance I can see…This is not the setting (background) or the main subject (foreground), but everything else.d) In the foreground there are…There are usually shapes, or objects in the foreground; these are used to draw attention to them.e) Overall I can describe my photograph as…Describe the composition of the photograph.f) The lines and shapes found in my photograph are…Are they rhythmic or chaotic?g) The colours are…Soft and subtle? Pastel and tonal? Bright and ‘in your face’? Strident and clashing? Or somewhere in between. Colour is very personal and changes with mood and fashion.

h) I can also see textures and patterns that are…Patterns can be seen but textures need to be felt or imagined.i) The way I created this photograph was by… Think about how you started this task, why did you choose to take the picture you have, why did you choose to focus your picture on the objects in it?j) The first part of what I did was…How did you use your camera to get the best composition?k) Then I…Imagine the process you went through after taking the picture, how / why did you select this image from your contact sheet?l) Finally I…Did you edit the picture before printing it out on a computer. How did you mount it?m) Before I started looking closely at every day objects I thought…You must have been drawn to the subject of your picture in the first place by something about it: what was that?n) Now I have looked more closely I think…This statement is an important one, what have you discovered about looking at things differently?

Page 27: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Analysing your photographs…Example:

In this picture I can see a face made up from an egg poacher inside a saucepan. You can just see in the background there is the bottom part of a saucepan and in the middle distance I can see two raw eggs making up the eyes in this face. In the foreground the handle of the plastic poacher forms both the nose and the mouth. Overall I can describe my photograph as well composed and fun! The lines and shapes found in my photograph are made of circles and rectangles. The colours of the egg eyes stand out against the white poacher and the black pan.I can also see textures and patterns that are smooth in their appearance. The way I created this photograph was by moving the poacher about in the pan until it looked like a face. Then I zoomed in on my camera to improve the composition of the picture. Before I started looking closely at every day objects I did not really notice or look for hidden pictures! Now I have looked more closely I think that I see things more creatively.

Page 28: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Task A: Mounting Presentation Sheet 3

You now need to print out your overall most favourite photograph.

Using another of your 4 A3 sheets, mount you’re your four photographs onto the background.

Also add the title ‘My Favourite Picture’ as seen on the right.

Finally you need to write about why you like you chosen picture so much. The next slide will explain how you do this.

This is an example only, you can choose to arrange the sheet differently if you wish.

My Favourite Picture7.

This is my Favourite picture because….

Page 29: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Expressing your opinion…Use the following questions to help you to write about why you like your favourite picture so much. You need to write a sentence for each answer.

The next slide shows a finished example of this.

a) This picture makes me feel…Describe exactly how the picture makes you feel, use words like happy, sad, excited, depressed etc…b) The strengths of this picture are…Write about what you think are the best aspects of your photograph, say what makes these aspects so great.c) The weakness of this picture is…Write about what you think are the weakest aspects of your photograph, say what makes these aspects so weak.d) I like / dislike this picture because…State if you like your picture or not, explain your answer.e) I could improve this picture by…Think of ways to improve your work, what extra things could you do?f) This is my favourite picture because…State why you have chosen this image from all of your photographs. What is there in your picture composition that you like so much?

Page 30: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Expressing your opinion…Example:

This picture makes me feel very happy, I think it is a fun photograph. The strengths of this picture are its composition, I like how the picture is arranged so that we focus on the raw eggs at first. The weakness of this picture is the bottom section of the composition, I don’t like how the black sauce pan is positioned, I think it should be more centred inline with the rest of the photograph.I like this picture because of the simple range of colours used, yellow, cream and black. I feel these colours work well together.I could improve this picture by improving its symmetry. This is my favourite picture overall because of the contrast shown between the dark and light areas.

Task A: Post Card Home8.

Finally, print out one of the four post card blanks from the next slide.

Cut down and glue your final face collage onto the back of your printed out postcard blank. Remember to leave a white border around the edge.

Then write a story on the reverse of your postcard which is based on what your collaged face could have seen.

The next few slides give you some examples of this.

Dear Tappy,

I'm so fed up. I work so hard every day, making sure all the members of the family have their baths and are nice and clean. I make sure mom can have her bath in a morning and the children have their bath before bedtime. They love splashing around and don't get to have any fun, I never have a day off. I'm tired and grumpy and want to go on strike!!!!Love from,

Plug.

Dear Sam,

I've had the best time on my last flying trip. I flew over Africa, gliding across the Okavango river, and I could see how the river wound like a snake through the tall, lush grass. I saw herds of elephants and giraffes roaming to new feeding grounds. I saw hippos grazing on grass in the African sunshine and zebra's playing in groups. This place was untouched by man, no humans live here and the scenery was perfect! It was the best trip I've ever been on!!Love, Claire. x

Page 40: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Task B: Collecting your pictures…

You will need to cut out lots of coloured pictures of different everyday objects from magazines and newspapers. Try to collect a range of small medium and large pictures. Remember to check that these are old ones and no one wants them anymore

You now need to start to experiment with how you arrange them. When happy with your arrangement, glue them down. You need to create 9 different face collages from your cut out pictures like the example on the right. The next slide shows you some more examples of this.

Page 47: Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge ‘Faces in Places’ Art & Design Department

Analysing your collages…Example:

In this collage I can see a face made up from lots of different fruit pictures which have been cut out from magazines. The background has deliberately been left blank so that the face image stands out. In the foreground there is a lot of blank space, similar to the background, again this is designed to make the apple face stand out.Overall I can describe my collage as well composed and arranged, it’s a fun fruity face! The lines and shapes found in my collage are mainly made up of circular shapes formed by the fruit. The colours of the collage are set off by the strong red face which complements the other colours of the surrounding fruit sections.I can also see textures that are smooth in their appearance, Patterns can also be found in the cut up fruit. The way I created this photograph was by laying the different pictures on top of each other creating many layers. I moved many of the images around until I was happy with my composition. Then I glued all of the pictures in place.

Task B: Mounting Presentation Sheet 3

Using another of your 4 A3 sheets, mount your the 8th collage onto the background.

Expressing your opinion…Example:

This picture makes me feel very happy, I think it is a fun collage. The strengths of this picture are its composition, I like how the picture is arranged so that we focus on the smiley face at first. The weakness of this picture is the bottom section of the composition, I think too much space has been left on the page, the face would have looked better if it had been centred more.I like this picture because of its simplicity and due to the range of colours used complement the background colour well.I could improve this picture by improving its layout position on the page. This is my favourite picture overall because of how the shapes have been collaged together, I feel the final effect of this collage is good.
