Jungle challenge 1: Sentences and parts of sentences

The sentence is fundamental to all written and spoken communication. A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense by itself.

A sentence may be:

A statement ‘Today’s winner is Tom.’

A question ‘Who chose these clothes?’

A command ‘Close the window.’

Page 6: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

An exclamation ‘I don’t believe it!’

Write down whether each group of words is a statement, a question, a command, an exclamation or not a sentence at all.

(Remember that a sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense by itself.)

Write the answer next to each sentence. Number one has been done for you…

1. I look forward to the holidays. Statement

2. My cat chases all the dogs in our street.

3. To the dustbins you can

4. Where have you put my books?

5. Look out!

6. What size do you need?

7. My English teacher really annoys me.

8. If only there

9. I’m busy doing my homework.

10. Take cover!

11. Beware of the bull!

12. Why should I be punished?

13. If I was going

14. Amazing!

15. Add the sugar to the cake mix.

Page 7: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

If you get them all right you will earn one bug!

Sentences continued...

Building a sentence is like building a wall. If you miss out one of the bricks, the wall will collapse. If you miss out an essential part of a sentence, it will not make sense.

Look at the sentences below. Read them out loud then suggest a word that could be added somewhere in the sentence to make the words make sense. Write the revised sentence on the line.

1. James to the library. ______________________________

2. The was shut. ______________________________

3. My bus late. ______________________________

4. What you want? ______________________________

5. Emma ran towards the. ______________________________

6. I hate doing. ___________________________

It is now important to think about the essential ingredients for every sentence. Every sentence must have a subject (usually a noun.) Every sentence must have a verb.

These are the two basic ingredients.

NounsA word that names anything is a noun. There are proper nouns and common nouns.A proper noun begins with a capital letter. The real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones.

Proper nounsYour own name is a proper noun. Write out your full name below, remembering capital letters.

Write the name of the town or village where you live.

Write the name of your English teacher.

__________________________________________________________________________

Common nounsA common noun names something that does not have a given name. E.g, table, chair, pen, house, tree, computer etc.Write the name of three other common nouns below:1. _______________________________

PronounsYou can use a pronoun to replace a noun. For example, Peter’s wife was strange.Becomes: His wife was strange.

LooEnglish k at the following list of pronouns:

Now fill in the following gaps choosing a suitable pronoun.

1. ................................luggage went missing.

2. ................................did not have her pen.

3. Is this ..............................sister?

4. It belongs to me. Put it down, it’s....................................

5. Is..........................throat sore?

6. ...............................could not find his football boots.

7. The whole team had lost ...........................football boots....................could not be found anywhere.

Win a bug if you get all the pronoun activities correct!

The second ingredient: the verb

A verb tells us what something, or someone, does. (Sometimes known as a doing word!) A sentence can be as short as two words, as long as you have a subject (usually a noun) and a verb.

Dogs bark. Fish swim. Ships float.

Most sentences are longer but still always have a noun and a verb.Underline the verbs in the following sentences.

1. The boy walked along the dark, cold street.

2. Asha hated her new, blue school jumper.

3. The cat jumped onto the fence.

Now fill in the missing verb in each sentence.

1. David...........................towards the main entrance.

2. After school Andrew......................home.

3. Rebecca............................when her cat died.

4. The library shelves...........................under the weight of the heavy books.

5. The leaves.....................on the tree and the flowers....................in the garden.

Page 11: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Another bug if you get all the verb activities correct!

There are other ‘ingredients’ which help make a good sentence.

AdverbsAdverbs describe how you do something. (They describe the verb.)

Look at the following sentence. ‘Jack sang.’

In this sentence Jack is the noun and ‘sang’ is the verb. If we want to know how he sang, we need an adverb. Adverbs normally end in ‘ly’.

The sentence would then change to ‘Jack sang loudly’. Or ‘Jack sang quietly.’

Underline the adverbs in the following sentences.

1) The swan glided peacefully on the pond.

2) She stood up quickly.

3) Suddenly, the car swerved.

4) Please cross the road carefully.

Read the following sentences then write them out in a paragraph, adding adverbs to the sentences. You can use the adverbs from the word bank if you like.

1) I sat at the edge of the river.2) The water moved past me.3) There was a sound.4) I heard the sound of an engine.

Page 12: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

5) It was heading towards me.6) I pulled in my fishing line and watched.7) The noise grew louder.8) The boat was speeding along the river.9) As it passed, I looked at the name of the boat.10) It said, ‘Wave-Maker’!

Use the box to write the answer in.

Word bank: Adverbs

Win yourself another bug if you’ve completed all these activities correctly!

The final ingredient we’re going to deal with here are adjectives.

Adjectives describe the noun and they help make an interesting sentence. They allow us to label things and to make our descriptions of nouns more precise.Examples of adjectives are:

Choose a person in your household, or a family member or friend and write a description of them, using as many adjectives as you can. Write it in the space below. When you have done this, show it to someone else in your house and ask if they can guess who it is!

My description:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

excellent brilliant marvellous horrible hateful

large short dull bright red green

beautiful ugly happy sad old unhappy

comfortable smelly hard dark young

Page 14: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Now get someone to guess who it is!

My name is ....................................................... and my guess is ……………….........................

Adjectives can be used to bring your writing alive. The word ‘nice’ is an adjective but it is often over-used.Replace ‘nice’ in the following sentences to make them more interesting and to tell you something more specific about the noun.

1. It was a nice party.

2. They were nice people.

3. The food was nice.

4. The presents were nice.

Earn another bug if you’ve completed all the adjective activities correctly!

Page 15: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

The dangers of overwriting

Some writers believe that adjectives can be over-used and that using lots of adjectives actually makes the writing weaker. Read the following passage and look carefully at the adjectives which are underlined.

Imagine that you are an editor at a publishing company. Re-write the following piece of text so that it is less cluttered with description and then answer the questions that follow.

1. Write out your revised text.

2. The extract contains 20 adjectives. How many did you cut out? How many did you keep?

I stood alone on the dark, gloomy, jutting cliff thinking about what faithful old Max had said. Were his secret, whispered words honest? I watched the billowing waves, the rolling hills of wild, crashing, icy water explode beneath my dainty feet. The cool, chill, biting wind lifted and cut into my tightly-wrapped, worried face. I faced an uncertain, dark future all alone.

Page 16: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

3. Write a sentence describing your response to the original text. What was wrong with it? What was right with it?

4. Write a sentence about your own edited version. How have you improved the original? How does it feel different?

Award yourself another bug for completing this activity!

Key point: Adjectives are powerful tools for adding detail- but they can be used too much. Too many clog up the reader’s response to the text. When using adjectives, make sure that they are serving a precise purpose-otherwise cut them!

Page 17: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Another ingredient of a sentence is a conjunction. Conjunctions are used to join parts of sentences together.

The following words are all examples of words which can be used as conjunctions.although, after, and, as, because, before, but, despite, if, of, unless, until, when, where, while

Re-write the following sentences using appropriate conjunctions to join them.

1. Sam and Jim went to the library. It was closed.

2. I have missed the bus. I will have to wait for the next one.

3. I don’t like cabbage. I was made to eat it when I was little.

4. He was found innocent of the charges. Some people still thought he was guilty.

Now re-write the following passage to make it more interesting by adding conjunctions. You do not need to use a conjunction between every sentence, choose one only when you think it is needed. Try to avoid using ‘and’ all the time. You can also cut a word or change the order of words to make the sentence flow better.

Your re-written paragraph

It was raining. The sky looked heavy. The trees swayed. They lost their leaves in the strong wind. The pavements hissed. The rain fell onto them. The gutters filled up. The drains worked overtime. I sat at the window. I watched the miserable scene.

Page 18: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Often students use the word ‘and’ too much. Imagine you are a teacher. Correct the following paragraph of a student’s writing. Use a coloured pen to show where the student has used ‘and’ too much and in the wrong places.

What advice would you give to the student?

Award yourself another bug for completing this activity!

Mrs Fletcher sat there and wondered if he would come home and she made herself a cup of tea. Then there was a knock at the door and when she opened it she saw her husband and he said ‘Can I come in?’ And she thought for a minute and then she said ‘Yes’ and so he came into the room and sat down. For a few seconds there was silence and then she said ‘Do you want some tea?’ and he said ‘Yes please’ and they started to get along better again.

Page 19: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

PrepositionsA preposition shows us where something is in relation to something else.

The dog was in his bed.

The word in tells us where the dog was in relation to his bed. He was in his bed.

Read the following passage and write in the missing prepositions so that it makes sense.

Page 20: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Jungle Challenge 2: Capital letters

Sentences must start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

There are some other times when you must use a capital letter.

You must also use a capital letter for all proper nouns. A proper noun is a real name - of a person, place or thing. When you use the letter ‘I’ to refer to yourself, you always need to use a capital letter.

Earn yourself another bug and correct this piece of writing. Add in the missing capital letters.

i think that saturday is the worst day of the week. on saturday i have to do the cleaning and cooking and i can’t go out with my friend sally to cambridge. I think the best day is sunday because then i can lie in bed and eat chocolate; cadbury’s flake is my favourite. i think january in england is the worst month because i always get a cold and i have to go to doctor gordon. I think august is the best month because we go to butlins at skegness. one year on holiday we went on the oxford canal and on the river thames and it was great.

Page 21: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Another bug if you spotted all the mistakes!

Jungle Challenge 3: Full stops

A world without full stops would be a very confusing place. For your sentences to make sense they must start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

Say the following passage out loud.

The room was stuffed with books of all shapes and sizes the largest books were covered in dust and hadn’t been touched in years there seemed to be no order to where anything was placed on the shelves it was obviously time the town appointed a new librarian unfortunately the town council had run out of money and could not afford to pay any wages

Did you find that it was really difficult to say out loud? Was it difficult to understand the meaning?

Now add five full stops to make the passage make sense. You will also need to add a capital letter after each full stop.

Read it out loud again to see how much easier it is now there are proper sentences!

Page 22: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Mark had just seen a robbery and was giving his story to the police. Trying to get his story out quickly, he hardly paused for breath.

The report was re-written using sentences so that the court would understand it. Write the report below so that Mark’s story makes sense. Use a capital letter at the start of every sentence and a full stop at the end.

Police Report

Witness Statement by Mark Jones

Signed....................................................

I saw them there were two, no, three of them running out of the shop the owner was running behind shouting at them to stop at least I think there were three the third one could have been the owner I’m not sure anyway they didn’t stop they just kept on running the first man knocked over a lady and didn’t even stop to say sorry do you want to know anything else?

Page 23: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Did you write the police report correctly? Win a bug if you did!

Jungle Challenge 4: CommasCommas are used for a number of reasons which can help to make sentences to make sense. Beware though, don’t use commas when you need full stops!

If there is a list in a sentence, a comma is used to separate each item.

Add commas to the lists in these sentences:a) When planning my walking holiday I had to remember to pack a compass map spare

pair of socks plasters and a raincoat.b) The cake recipe called for flour butter sugar and eggs.c) I left my work until the last minute and ended up having to do two essays a research

project and an art task all on the same night.d) I went shopping today and bought a new coat a pair of shoes a pair of jeans a black

top and a Nike baseball cap.

Commas can also be used to show a subordinate clause in a sentence (an extra part of a sentence which if left out, the sentence would still make sense.)

Read the sentence below.Mark the captain of the football team sprained his ankle and could not play.

By adding commas to show the subordinate clause the meaning becomes clearer.Mark, the captain of the football team, sprained his ankle and could not play.

Add commas to the sentences below to make the meaning clearer.a) Angela best friend of Susan wanted to go to the cinema.

b) Pete the oldest boy in the class was taller than his friends.

c) Jamie Jan’s son had baked a birthday cake.

d) My sister Sally a teacher is getting married in the spring.

Page 25: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Jungle Challenge 5: ApostrophesThere are two main reasons that you need to use apostrophes. Read the information and complete the following tasks to win yourself two spiders!

The apostrophe for possessionThis is to show that something belongs to something or someone.

The boy’s book. (The book belongs to the boy.)The teacher’s desk. (The desk belonging to the teacher.)The hen’s food. (The food belonging to one hen.)The hens’ food. (The food belonging to more than one hen.)

Add the apostrophes to the following sentences.a) The girls skirt was too short.

b) The cats milk had gone off. (more than one cat.)

c) My brothers bike has been stolen.

d) Simons hair had grown too long.

Now, using a bright coloured pen, add the missing apostrophes to the following passage.

Davids timetable was not looking good. His mums last words when he left home that morning were to remind him to work hard. His teachers comments on his last report showed that his work in all his subjects needed to improve. This timetable was a nightmare. Uncle Jims building firm was looking for workers. Should he forget about school and his mums plans for him and become a wage earner? The countrys laws, however, had different ideas. It said that he had to stay at school until he was sixteen and David was only seven!

Page 26: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

The apostrophe for omission This is when the apostrophe is used to show when a letter, or letters, have been left out.

Look at the examples below and then complete the tasks to win your spiders!

We are not= we’re not (missing out the letter a)Do not go= don’t go (missing out the letter n)I am going= I’m going (missing out the letter a)We did not wait = We didn’t wait (missing out the letter o)

Use a coloured pen to add the apostrophes to the following sentences.a) Weve a big dog at home.b) They didnt help us much.c) I hope itll be a nice day tomorrow.d) The story wasnt a funny one.e) He cant see out of the window.f) Dont forget to post my letter.g) She wouldnt play with my doll.h) Hell soon be coming home.

Now write out these sentences using the abbreviated form for the words underlined. The first one has been done for you.

a) I have not been to the zoo.

I haven’t been to the zoo.

b) They were not afraid of the dog.

c) You should not play with fire.

d) It is not far to walk.

Page 27: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

e) She is coming over to play with me.

f) He could not see where he was going.

g) That is the way to the park.

h) I hope you will have a good time.

Now, using a coloured pen, add in the apostrophes to the following paragraph. You need to add apostrophes for possession and apostrophes for omission.

Gain two spiders if you’ve completed all the tasks correctly.

Peters house was cold and dark. Its windows were dirty and the next door neighbours weeds poked through the broken fence. He knew he shouldve warned someone that he was coming but it wouldnt do to tell people your business would it? Besides which, Mrs Prices wages for looking after the house werent small. She couldve done a better job!

Page 28: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

Jungle Challenge 6: Using punctuation in speech

In this cartoon you can tell who’s speaking because the words that are spoken are in speech bubbles. Draw a cartoon strip of your own and add speech bubbles to show what’s being said.

When we are writing we use speech marks to show the words that are spoken. The words that are spoken are kept inside the speech marks.

Using a coloured pen or a highlighter, highlight the words that are actually said in the following sentences.

a) Mary said, “Don’t do that!”b) “What’s the matter with you?”she asked her friend.c) The nurse said, “How did you burn your hand?”

Now, in a different coloured pen, add speech marks to the following sentences.

Page 29: Year 7 Spring Term - stivoenglish.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewThe real name of something is a proper noun. E.g. Buckingham Palace, Tom Jones. Proper nouns. Your own name

a) How old are you? the shopkeeper asked.b) James said My exam marks are quite good.c) Where is your homework? Asked the teacher.

You also need to know how to punctuate when using direct speech. Look at where the punctuation goes in the following example.

“Hello,” said Tricia.

Mike replied, “Hi.”

Look at the example below and then re-write it so it is correct. 1) Use a new line for each new speaker.2) Use speech marks. 3) Add the correct punctuation.

Another two spiders if you complete these tasks correctly!

Hello said Debbie. Hi said Sam. Everything ok said Debbie. Sam replied Not really. Oh said Debbie.

Paragraphing

Can you then show how you would split this passage into five paragraphs? Use a coloured pen and draw a line where the each new paragraph should start.

The Iron Man stood up straight. Slowly he turned, till he was looking directly at Hogarth. “We’re sorry we trapped you and buried you,” shouted the little boy. “We promise we’ll not deceive you again. Follow us and you can have all the metal you want. Brass too. Aluminium too. And lots of chrome. Follow us.” The Iron Man pushed aside the boughs and came into the lane. Hogarth joined the farmers. Slowly they drove back down the lane, and slowly, with all his cogs humming, the Iron Man stepped after them.

They led through the villages. Half the people came out to stare, half ran to shut themselves inside bedrooms and kitchens. Nobody could believe their eyes when they saw the Iron Man marching behind the farmers. At last they came to the town, and there was a great scrap-metal yard. Everything was there, old cars by the hundred, old trucks,

a) Study

Can you split the word into smaller parts?

Do the sounds in the words help you?

Is there anything about its spelling which is similar to other words you know?

b) Cover the word and....

c) Write it from memory

This will fix it in your mind more firmly than if you just copy it.
