Grammar – putting it all together!

1.Important verbs

We can already use and change the verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to have’:

être – to be

je suis - I amtu es - you areil est - he is etc

avoir – to have

J’ai – I have

Tu as - you have

Il a – he has etc

To talk about activities and chores, we need to know two more verbs:aller – to gofaire – to do/ to makeThey are infinitives. Remember, infinitives are the ‘full’ verb before it changeswhen someone does the action.

31

Page 33: Year 7 French - parrswood.manchester.sch.uk€¦  · Web viewIn French, like in English, an “ s” is added to the word, but it is not usually pronounced, as it is silent

Here they are in full with the changes:

aller - to go

Je vais I go/I am going

Tu vas You go/you are going

Il va He goes/he is going

Elle va She goes/she is going

On va We go/we are going

Nous allons We go/we are going

Vous allez You go/you are going

Ils vont They go /they are going

Elles vont They go/they are going

faire - to do/to make

Je fais I do/I am doing

Tu fais You do/you are doing

Il fait He does/he is doing

Elle fait She does/she is doing

On fait We do/we are doing

Nous faisons We do/we are doing

Vous faîtes You do/you are doing

Ils font They do /they are doing32

Page 34: Year 7 French - parrswood.manchester.sch.uk€¦  · Web viewIn French, like in English, an “ s” is added to the word, but it is not usually pronounced, as it is silent

Elles font They do/they are doing

2. Verbs (infinitives) ending in -ER

Most verbs follow this pattern. For example JOUER = to play

To say different people are doing the action, you must :

- take away the -ER

- add special endings when different people do the action.

Je joue I play/I am playing

Tu joues The -s is not pronounced

You play/You are playing

Il joue He plays/he is playing

Elle joue She plays/she is playing

On joue We play/we are playing

Nous jouons We play/we are playing

Vous jouez You play/you are playing

Ils/Elles jouent The -ent is not pronounced

They play/they are playing

33

Page 35: Year 7 French - parrswood.manchester.sch.uk€¦  · Web viewIn French, like in English, an “ s” is added to the word, but it is not usually pronounced, as it is silent

3. Reflexive verbs

To say what you do to yourself, we add a little word to the verb to show that you do it to yourself. These are reflexive verbs.

Se laver To wash

Je me lave I wash myself

Tu te laves You wash yourself

Il se lave He washes himself

Elle se lave She washes herself

On se lave We wash ourselves

Nous nous lavons We wash ourselves

Vous vous lavez You wash yourself/ves

Ils/Elles se lavent They wash themselves

4. Opinions with infinitives

34

Page 36: Year 7 French - parrswood.manchester.sch.uk€¦  · Web viewIn French, like in English, an “ s” is added to the word, but it is not usually pronounced, as it is silent

-Saying what you like or do not like to do.

aimer – to like

J’aime

Tu aimes

Il /Elle/ On aime

Nous aimons

Vous aimez

Ils aiment

Elles aiment

Add an infinitive (the full verb) to say what you or someone else likes/dislikes

doing:

e.g. J’aime jouer au football

You can use other verbs/people:

Je déteste aller en ville Nous détestons jouer au basket

5. Negatives

To say not or no in French, you use ne/n’…..pas (around the verb)Like a sandwich!

e.g. J’ai un stylo I have a pen je n’ai pas de stylo I don’t have a pen

Il s’appelle David He is called David il ne s’appelle pas David He is not called David

35

Page 37: Year 7 French - parrswood.manchester.sch.uk€¦  · Web viewIn French, like in English, an “ s” is added to the word, but it is not usually pronounced, as it is silent

n’ is used if the word begins with a vowel or “h”

e.g. Elle habite en ville She lives in town Elle n’habite pas en ville She doesn’t live in town

Look more closely at these opinions you have learnt:

J’aime – I likeJe n’aime pas – I don’t like

Can you spot the same pattern in these?

6. Comparisons

We have used adjectives to describe places and people. To compare in French,we add in words just like in English.

plus – moremoins - lessaussi – asque – than

e.g. c’est amusant – it’s fun ->

c’est plus amusant que les maths – it’s more fun than maths

c’est moins mignon que le lapin – it’s less cute than the rabbit

c’est aussi mignon que le lapin – it’s as cute as the rabbit
