Rastrick High School: Home Learning
Year 7 French
Booklet 3: Half-Term 3
My town
This booklet covers content for the whole Spring 1 term. Answers &
instructions for all tasks are provided (answers are at the end of the
booklet).
Guidance for completing MFL work:
The work inside the booklets on ClassCharts/in school reception contain enough work to cover the 12 hours of lesson time you would have had in this half-term, it is therefore expected that you spend a similar amount of time completing the tasks. This can be done in small chunks and/or with regular breaks. You will be directed by your teacher to which lessons you need to complete.
The content of the booklets is based on activities/tasks from your lessons. This means that you should be familiar with the different types of tasks set by your teacher. Within each booklet are instructions (in English) for every task that you have to complete.
If you struggle to understand a task, please see below a list of useful websites to help you with vocabulary & grammar:
- https://www.wordreference.com (online dictionary) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/z98jmp3 (grammar & vocabulary)
- https://quizlet.com/topic/languages/ (vocabulary learning)
All answers to the tasks are at the back of the booklets provided. This means that once you have completed certain tasks, you can mark these yourself to see where you have made good progress and which areas you may need to revise.
Remember - you do not need to print out the work - you could just read it on screen and work in an exercise book or on lined paper. There are also printed copies of the booklets available to pick up from school if anyone cannot access them on a screen.
If you have any questions about the work, please don't hesitate to get in touch via the Contact page on the school website or emailing your teacher directly.

Lesson 1 – Qu’est-ce qu’il y a dans ta ville?
Objective: To be able to talk about your town/village and what there is there.
IN&ON: Recap. Write 3
sentences in French about what
you like doing in your free time –
this is a re-cap of vocabulary
that we looked at the first week
of Year 7. Then translate it into
English. As a challenge, can you
do the task without looking at
the Sentence Builder below?
Task 1: Familiarise yourself with the words from the sentence builder below, which you can
use to build answers from the first question on the parallel text.
Task 2: After having looked through all of the vocabulary from Sentence Builder 1, choose
at least three of the following tasks which will help you familiarise yourself with the
vocabulary from the sentence builder. (Use the colours of the nouns to help you pair the
correct adjective with it).
• Write down the French and English for six sentences you have built using the
Sentence Builder above.
• Build six sentences, then time 20 seconds to look at each one before trying to
re-write the sentence from memory (as in the ‘frog copying’ activity we do in
class).
• Play ‘Trapdoor’ or ‘Mind Reading’ to guess a sentence someone else has built
(this could be someone in your family (they don’t need to know French, as they
can use the Sentence builder), or a friend in your class (over a phone call or
video chat).
• Make flashcards or a Look-Cover-Write-Check sheet to learn key words.
Task 3: Test yourself! Using the first grid on the following page, time yourself three
minutes per grid – how many phrases can you fill in (French to English)? Défi: do at least
one more task from the list above before testing yourself on the second grid (English to
French).
Lesson 2 – Dans ma ville, il y a… Objective: To be able to talk about your town/village and what there is there.
IN&ON – Using
the frame below,
write 3 sentences in
French, and then
translate them into
English.
Task 1: Mosaic translation – use the grid below to translate the English phrases
at the bottom into French.
Task 2: Pronunciation practice – have a go at reading out the following
phrases with a focus on pronunciation. Then translate the sentences into
English.
Task 3: Slalom. Using the slalom below, create 4 sentences using one
phrase from each row (start with row A all the way down to row I). Then
translate them into English.
W/C 11th January
Lesson 3 – Production
Objective: To be able to talk about your town/village and what there is
there with a focus on production.
IN&ON – Vocabulary check.
Task 1: Grammar point.
In French, be careful when
you’re talking about what
there isn’t in your town. You
need to use the phrase “il n’y
a pas de” + noun – there is no
need for the article “un/une”.
E.g. dans ma ville, il n’y a pas de piscine.
Task 2: Written piece – You’re now going to have a go at writing a paragraph (around
40 words), talking about ‘what there is and isn’t in your town’. Attempt to complete this
task without looking at your Knowledge Organiser/Sentence Builder, so that you are
recalling all of the vocabulary we have looked at so far, rather than being reliant upon
the SB. Look at the example below if you need some support.
Challenge: Can you have a go at including an opinion about your town (last sentence of
the WAGOLL below). You have seen opinion phrases in previous topics, as well as a
variety of adjectives, so can you utilise both and write an opinion about where you live.
Lesson 4 – Retrieval and Recall
Objective: To be able to independently talk about your town/village and
what there is there.
IN&ON – Quick 10
Task 1: Mosaic translation - Translate the 4 French sentences below into
English, using the mosaic to help you.
1. Dans mon village, il y a une piscine cependant, il n’y a pas de château.
2. Dans ma région, il y a un café mais il n’y a pas de centre de loisirs.
3. Ou j’habite, il y a une patinoire mais je préfèrerais avoir un centre
commercial.
4. Dans ma ville, il y a un marché cependant, il n’y a pas d’église.

class).
• Play ‘Trapdoor’ or ‘Mind Reading’ to guess a sentence someone else has built
(this could be someone in your family (they don’t need to know French, as they
