See if you can develop your design further by adding more pattern and imagery like the second example. Using tonal values will help create the illusion of form (a three-dimensional surface). Task 11: The Formal Elements There are seven formal elements of Art & Design. Every piece of artwork is made up of a selection or all of the following formal elements. Read through and memorise the following formal elements.

Page 12: Year 7: Art & Design – Plan for the Term Homework …Calligraphy The art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush. Decorative The purpose of making something

Consider where you have used these elements in your own artwork this term.

Task 12: Heraldry Mind Map Task 12: Heraldry Mind Map

Line The path left by a moving point. For example, a pencil, a stick or a paintbrush dipped in paint.

Shape The area enclosed by a line. It could be just an outline or it could be shaded in. Shapes can be geometric, like a circle or triangle, or irregular

Colour Colour is created by light and is broken down into three properties: hue, value and intensity. The colour wheel is an important tool in Art & Design.

Pattern A design that is created by repeating lines, shapes, tones or colours. Patterns can be man-made, like the design printed/woven onto a fabric, or could be completely natural i.e. the markings on animal fur.

Form A three dimensional shape, such as a cube, sphere or cone. Sculpture and three-dimensional design are about creating form. In two-dimensional artwork tone and perspective can be used to create the illusion of form.

Tone Refers to how light or dark something is. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears. Tones are created by the way light falls onto a 3D object. Light areas are highlights, whereas darker areas are shadows.

Texture Relates to the surface quality – the way something feels or looks like it feels. Actual texture can be created by changing the surface of a canvas, for example, whilst visual texture is created by using marks to represent a particular surface.

In Medieval times, heraldry was known as armoury. The name heraldry comes from the heralds, which were those officials responsible for proclamations at medieval tournaments i.e. knights jousting. It was the heralds’ job to keep track of all the coat of arms used by knights and identify which belonged to which knight. We have a coat of arms on our own school badge. Our coat of arms is a symbol of Turton School.

Designing your own personal coat of arms: In the space below, mind-map all of the hobbies/interests personal to you. You will use these in future to design your own personal coat of arms.

All about me…

• Draw your design out carefully on the coat of arms template provided. • Use the coat of arms ideas (left) to help you with your layout, using a ruler for any straight lines. • You may outline your drawing in black pen and add colour to your work. Carefully consider your presentation.
