Faith Focus Term 3 Week 10 It’s Not Fair I grew up with an older brother and 3 sisters, so I wouldn’t like to think the number of times my mum and dad heard one of us say – “It’s not fair!”. Maybe you’ve heard it or thought it once or twice in your life. We all have our own understanding of the concept of fairness – the teams aren’t fair, restrictions and rules aren’t fair, tax cuts aren’t fair, not getting to go first isn’t fair, the umpires aren’t fair. The list is endless. Usually when we say ‘It’s not fair’, we are also saying ‘I didn’t get what I thought I or somebody else deserved.’ We make a judgement on how much skill, effort or contribution has been made to judge fairness. A team that trains hard and plays as a team deserves success, but a team that doesn’t train, and players do their own thing, we’d say they don’t deserve to win. On Sunday, the bible reading was a parable found in Matthew 20:1-16. Pastor Ben shared his message based on this parable that looks on the surface, as a classic example of life not being fair. Workers started the day agreeing to the amount of payment they would receive for the day. Progressively through the day, extra workers started and then surprisingly, everyone was paid the same amount at the end of the day – regardless of how many hours they worked. The original workers complained that this wasn’t fair. The business owner had a different view. He paid the original workers what they agreed to and he can be generous with others if he wants to. We can learn a lot from this parable, but one key learning is just how merciful and gracious God is. God offers us his love and forgiveness, not based on a fairness system of how kind, polite, generous or upstanding we have been, or even how many times we have been to church. Rather, he says his love is for each one of us, at any time of our lives, regardless of what our lives have looked like up to now. God doesn’t say “when you deserve my love I’ll give it to you”. We will never deserve God’s perfect love, because none of us are perfect. God’s saving love is a free gift each one of us receives, it’s not something we can earn. When we talk about grace, that’s what we mean. ‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God’ Ephesians 2:8 2020 James Heyne Year 6’s enjoying the stage at our matinee performances of Mystery at Magpie Manor.

It ’s Not FairI grew up with an older brother and 3 sisters, so I wouldn’t like to think the number of times my mum and dad heard one of us say – “It’s not fair!”.

Usually when we say ‘It’s not fair ’, we are also saying ‘I didn’t get what I thought I or somebody else deserved.’ We make a judgement on how much skill, effort or contribution has been made to judge fairness.

Important BitsPrincipal PonderingsAs we close this term, I want to be thankful. It could be easy to focus on and remember what we haven’t been able to do, as disappointing as it has been, and overlook what we have been able to do. I’ve listed some of the reasons I’m grateful for Term 3:

The excursions our Year 2,3,4 and 5 students enjoyed; SRC lunch clubs – the gardening, dancing and art fun; Book fair and the passion for reading at St Mark’s; The passion and enthusiasm of our students preparing for concert; Our school band and choir who voluntarily share their gift of music with us; The building works that are underway; The seasons that bring both rain and sunshine; The morning conversations as students arrive; Donuts; Students recording songs for Sunday worship; Students holding doors open for others, waiting for friends to finish eating so they have a friend to play with, cubbies and forts being built together, games of chasey, marks up; The poems, stories, investigations, artwork, and dioramas I see on our corridor walls and classroom benches and hear about at assemblies; and The privilege of sharing my days with 310 students and 34 staff.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but a small snapshot reminding me of the blessings of our term.

Mystery at Magpie ManorOur performances to date have been wonderful examples of the enthusiasm, engagement, skill and joy of our students as they have presented ‘The Mystery at Magpie Manor’, along with their choir and school band performances. There is a deep sense of satisfaction seeing our students perform. I extend my thanks to all our staff for their support and preparation of our students. I particularly wish to thank and acknowledge Miss Lyall, our music teacher, for her amazing efforts and skills in bringing alive the story and creating the opportunity for our students to shine.

The link to view the performance on Youtube will be emailed to families as soon as it is available.

Summer UniformAs we begin Term Four, students should wear their summer uniform unless we have unseasonal cold weather. We do have a transition period for uniform changeover to allow for discretion in cases of cold weather. Summer or winter uniform must be worn, not a combination of both.

StaffingThis week we are advertising two positions for 2021. As we prepare to farewell Janene Overton to retirement at the end of the year it is vital we recruit the right person as our next Pastoral Support Worker. Mr Seidel will also remain on leave and we are advertising a Year 6 classroom position for 2021.

Redevelopment WorksMany of our students have been fascinated watching the redevelopment work to the inside and outside of our Foundation classrooms. This week we have been able to see the new spaces and designs taking shape.

During the term break, the work on the redesign of the front office will take place. The high winds and rain we have experienced this week have reinforced the need to relocate the entrance door. It is hoped that the work will be completed during the term break. If it is not quite complete you’ll find a temporary front desk located by the main student entrance double doors.

Office ClosureThe school office will largely be closed and unattended from the end of tomorrow afternoon before reopening on Thursday, 8th of October. You may find management at the office at times during the break. If you do require assistance during this time, please phone ahead.

Please note you will not be able to access the current front office area during the term break. A temporary front office desk will be located by the main student entrance double doors.

Term 4We will begin Term Four on Monday, 12th October with opening chapel at 9:00am in our hall. The first bell will sound at 8:45 am as usual.

If there are any easing of restrictions that allow larger gatherings and involvement of adults onsite in Term 4, I will advise you via email during the break.

I pray you have a restful and safe term break as we prepare for an exciting Term 4. The term calendar included in today’s newsletter gives you an overview of what’s ahead.

Next P and F Meeting is Wednesday, 21st October at 7pm in the library. It would be fantastic to see you there.

Hope that you all have a great break from school and some fun times together.

School LifeSt Mark’s Lutheran School Council

Nominations RequiredEach year in November, the St Mark’s Lutheran Church, Mt Barker elects the School Council who hold governance responsibility for St Mark’s Lutheran School. One of the roles of the School Council is to provide nominations to the church’s November election meeting.

The school constitution sets the membership of the Council at eight councillors. Of the eight, at least six members shall be members of St Mark’s Lutheran church or another Lutheran Church, with up to two councillors able to be practicing Christians from the school or wider community.

The St Mark’s School Council is currently seeking Expressions of Interest to fill two vacant positions in 2021. The role on School Council is voluntary and requires members to meet once a month during the school year.

Ideally, applicants will have experience in one of the following areas: marketing and communications, education and training, strategic thinking and problem solving, as this knowledge and experience will complement the current range of abilities within the Council.

Due to the current composition of the School Council and constitutional membership requirements, we require that one of the applicants is a member of St Mark’s Lutheran Church, Mt Barker or a member of another Lutheran Church, with one applicant able to be a practicing Christian member from the school or wider church community.

Any interested community members are invited to contact either our School Council Chairperson, Bev Gogel by phoning 0422 535 331 or Casey Work, our School Council Vice Chairperson on 0422 070 986 or by leaving a message at the school front office to receive further details on the nominations process. Nominations will need to be received by Thursday, 8th October.

Thank you,Bev GogelSchool Council Chairperson

Well done to all!

Gardening ClubOne of our SRC initiatives, Gardening Club, has been busy again this week.

They have been planning our garden design and also have placed guards around the trees that we planted.

Year 3 NewsAs a part of ‘I Wonder Wednesday’ the Year 3’s came up with great questions about the building work at St Mark’s. They sent the questions to Mr Wright (St Mark’s Business Manager) and were super lucky to have Mr Wright and the project manager John, come in to answer their questions.

Come see a Year 3 and they will be able to tell you what is happening to our building at St Mark’s.Just a few of the questions are wondering Year 3 minds put to our visitors...

Why did they put a fence up?What will be in the new learning space?

What is the purpose of the building? Are they going to build more verandahs?

Why was there water squirting out the ground? Are they just going to blow the foundation building up?What will it be made out of? Will they find a snake?

What machinery do they use? What is going to happen? Will we get used to the noise? What is it going to look like?

Why are there pipes in the work area? Will it be loud? Why does the school want to build on?

When will the gates be closed?

German NewsThis week, Year 2 students formed teams and researched German foods, nature and animals, sport, schooling and family life in German-speaking countries. They contrasted what is similar and what is different about their lives here in the Adelaide Hills. We also had a tasting of Kartoffelpuffer (shredded potato pancakes), it was delicious!

Mystery at Magpie Manor Reflections...Josh BThe Play has been amazing since I play alongside my friend Blot, also known as Jesse. Our role in the play is to make people laugh.

David BI really like my character because the lines my character has to say are very cool for me. I don’t think I would have wanted to be any other character. I’m so lucky I got the role!

Lyla HMy character Honey is a movie star and is quite sassy. Some of the highlights were seeing how the different classes did the same roles, also learning different voices and expressions.

Max RMy character Lord Pica, is the owner of Magpie Manor and his a rich person and he is so posh. I like this role because it was good and fun to be so important.

Library NewsOverdue BooksOverdue notices were handed out to all classes last week. There are lots of overdue books on loan to students. Some of these books are items that were loaned when we did the bulk loan, due to COVID, back in March. I ask that you please ask children to have a good search for these books during the school holidays. We much prefer to use our budget to purchase new books rather than replace lost items.

Book WeekChildren in F-3 have been doing activities on the Shortlisted Book Week books. The winners of each category will be announced early in Term 4.

The theme for this year’s Book Week is ‘Curious Creatures Wild Minds’. Children have been asking if we will be dressing up this year and YES….we will. There will be a dress up day Thursday, 15th October (Week 1).

This year we would like children to dress up as A CURIOUS CREATURE. This could be a creature from a book OR a made up creature. Children may like to make a simple costume during the school holidays. E.g. a mask, coloured wig, decorated garbage bag or cardboard box.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!
