HOMEWORK Homework will be set every Friday during the school term and it will

normally be due the following Friday unless stated otherwise.

Maths homework will be set on the MyMaths website and pupils will

have the opportunity to complete this in a homework club if there are

issues accessing it at home.

The focus for English homework in Year 6 this year will be vocabulary

and spellings and pupils will be set weekly dictionary work to complete

based on their weekly spellings.

Your support regarding the completion of homework is vital. All

homework will be linked to learning in school and so all pupils should be

able to attempt homework.

HOMEWORK• The children have been given homework diaries to

record when they are given homework. The homework

diary should be in school every day. Please sign the

homework diary weekly to show that you have seen it.

Homework diaries will be checked in class each Friday.

• Organisation – please encourage your child to

become responsible for their own things e.g. bringing

homework in, getting diaries signed and accepting

consequences for when things aren’t done!

• Lunchtime detentions will be given for lack of

organisation e.g. forgetting homework, not having

planner signed.

READING

Reading is such an important part of learning

in Year 6.

‘Good’ reading is crucial in terms of

developing pupils’ vocabulary, imagination

alongside their grasp of the English

language.

All pupils should be reading a challenging

book on a nightly basis in order to extend

their learning.

SCHOOL UNIFORM Wearing a full school uniform on a daily basis is an integral part of being a pupil

here at St Joseph’s. Children should be proud to wear our uniform.

A full school uniform includes black or navy closed-toe shoes. Trainers, open-toed shoes and boots are not permitted.

A full school uniform includes a light blue polo shirt, shirt or blouse; a navy jumper or cardigan; a grey skirt or pinafore dress for girls; and trousers (grey for boys and navy for girls).

In summer, grey shorts and blue gingham dresses are also acceptable.

Children should also bring a suitable coat for wearing during play and lunchtimes.

Children’s school uniform should be named to ensure that, when a child misplaces an item of clothing, it can be reunited with them quickly.

Children should ensure that they have a PE kit in school to ensure that they can take part in PE lessons. PE kit should be sent in in a named bag.

Being disciplined in terms of following a school uniform policy is good preparation for secondary school and beyond.

Further information about the school uniform can be found on our website.

SATS 2020

• These will be held during the week of

Monday 11th May – Thursday 14th May 2020.

• Please don’t book holidays this year in term time – what

children miss this year cannot be easily caught up.

Page 11: YEAR 6 PARENTS’ MEETING · 2019-10-08 · HOMEWORK Homework will be set every Friday during the school term and it will normally be due the following Friday unless stated otherwise

SATS 2020

How will your child be prepared for the tests in school?

- Preparation through the curriculum

- Regularly set homework

- Practice papers throughout the year

- Test Tips throughout the year

- Individualised targeted feedback throughout the year

Page 12: YEAR 6 PARENTS’ MEETING · 2019-10-08 · HOMEWORK Homework will be set every Friday during the school term and it will normally be due the following Friday unless stated otherwise

SATS 2020

• It is so important that children are not stressed or worried

about the tests. In school our mantra will be that the

children simply need to work hard, try their best and show

off what they know. Please do speak to a member of

staff if you feel that your child is becoming anxious or

upset about the tests

Page 13: YEAR 6 PARENTS’ MEETING · 2019-10-08 · HOMEWORK Homework will be set every Friday during the school term and it will normally be due the following Friday unless stated otherwise

SATS 2020• How can you help?

- Ensure your child is in school every day on time

- Encourage your child to read every single night

- Ensure your child completes all homework by checking

their homework diary weekly. Encourage them to have

a go and don’t be tempted to write a note to give

excuses for why it hasn’t been done!

- Support us as staff so children see a united front

- Keep lines of communication between home and school open

through homework diaries, Class Dojos and attending

parents’ evenings.

SATS myth busters!

• Your child will still study all other areas of the curriculum –

SATs year doesn’t mean they practise all day everyday!

• SATs are not the only way that a child’s attainment is

judged at the end of the year

• If a child doesn’t achieve the required standard at the

end of the year, it most certainly doesn’t mean they are

a failure.

KEEPING SAFEAs we are visiting a busy city, we have put in place some additional measures to

keep your child safe. These include:

Very high ratio of adults : children. Each child will have a designated adult and

will stay with them throughout the trip.

Each child will be given a contact card on a lanyard with the details of the school

mobile phone (which we will have with us), our school contact details and any

medical information.

All adults will hold mobile phones and will keep up to date with current news and

events which may affect us.

When walking, we will walk in small groups within sight of each other, but not

compacted as a large group.

We will not congregate outside venues. When we leave a venue, we will

immediately make our way to the coach/next venue.

Page 20: YEAR 6 PARENTS’ MEETING · 2019-10-08 · HOMEWORK Homework will be set every Friday during the school term and it will normally be due the following Friday unless stated otherwise

COST

The trip will cost no more than £200.

A non-returnable deposit of £30 will be due to secure your child’s place. This is

due by Friday 11th October. The remainder of the balance will be due in

instalments throughout the year. If you would prefer to pay in one lump sum,

please feel free to do so.

It is so important that deadlines for payments are met. Payments to the venues

are required to be paid at different points throughout the year and we need to

have received the money in school to be able to make theses payments. If

payments to venues are missed, we risk losing our booking.

Experiments include: exploring the strength of gravity on different planets,

investigating the brightness of sunlight throughout the Solar System, testing

the pH of sand like a Mars rover, and performing a series of tests to identify a

real meteorite!

ATTENDANCE ON TRIPS

Educational visits and residential trips are such a valuable part of

our time in school. During such trips, children should remember

that they are representing our school at all times and that high

standards of behaviour should be maintained.

Any child whose behaviour, work ethic or attendance is deemed

unacceptable in the run up to school trips and residential will not

be permitted to attend.
