Year 6 Newsletter Summer Term 2017 English In English this term we will look at the use of persuasive and emotive language in different contexts such as speeches, advertising and reviews. This will be put into practise during our Junior Enterprise Project later in the term. An independent project, linking to our history topic, will give the girls lots of practice in note-taking, summarising and rephrasing key information. They will be inspired by events of the past to write in many different genres, practising all the skills they have learned in their time at Fairseat. This will also encourage the girls to make decisions for themselves and use their initiative. Mathematics Pie charts, Probability and Percentages! This term we will be making links between ICT and Junior Enterprise to develop our data handling skills and we will look at how to make the perfect pie chart. We will have some fun investigating probability and make some careful calculations to develop our understanding of percentages and fractions. We will continue to look at standard methods for multiplication, division, addition and subtraction as well as mental maths strategies. Geography We will discover some of the many ways in which the world around us is changing. From coastal erosion to political changes, there are many factors at work. We are going to consider the delicate balance of coastline environments and the issues they face for future development. This will be enhanced by our visit to Osmington Bay. Then, we will learn about the structure of the United Kingdom and how its shape and geography have changed over thousands of years. Using an online database of photographs, we will also explore how landscapes change. Finally, we will predict the future and look at changes which might occur in our lifetimes. History This term the girls will be finding out about some of the key events, changes, people and inventions of the past 100 years. They will complete an independent project using their English skills to write about History in a wide variety of ways. This allows them to follow their own interests. The project will mostly be completed in school, with some homework time allocated to specific tasks. Science We will continue our study of separating materials and dissolving this term, before spending a week revising past topics in preparation for the summer tests. We will then learn about inheritance and adaptation, followed by more advanced concepts around electricity to find out what happens when you change circuits in different ways. Art In Art we will be using the American artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol as our inspiration, this term we will be creating our very own Pop Art using images and icons that are popular in the modern world: for example, famous celebrities like movie stars and rock stars and commercial items like soup cans, soft drinks and comic books.

DT It’s time to go to the funfair! We will be working collaboratively to design and make a small- scale model fairground ride. The girls will learn how they operate using a motor, drive belt and electrical circuit with pulleys to slow the ride down. The girls will either make a rotating Carousel or a Ferris wheel mechanism.

PSHE As we are beginning to look forward to starting senior schools, this is an important time to think about ourselves and making good choices. We will think about our health and some of the decisions and dilemmas we may face as we grow up.

Modern Foreign Languages This term we will continue to practise our speaking skills in French and Spanish through role play and games. We will continue to study the simple future tense in French, before completing a project on a French speaking country. Then, we will create a café scene, utilising all of the necessary vocabulary to run and visit a flourishing French café. In Spanish, we will learn how to use the verb 'llegar' (to arrive) with transport methods and practise speaking and writing in three tenses.

RE This term we will be exploring and discussing the importance of race and diversity, as well as the value of personal beliefs and the differences in beliefs between religions. We will have the opportunity to share our different beliefs, influences and inspirations.

PE Year 6 will be re-introduced to the positions, rules and tactical game play of Rounders. They are now at a level where they can explore different tactics to better their performance in a game situation as they have a good knowledge and understanding of the basics. In Athletics, the girls will be learning the correct technique for baton changing in relays, sprinting, and practising throwing and jumping events in preparation for Sports Day. This term they will have the opportunity to participate, during lessons, in more complex events such as hurdles and discus.

ICT We will look at how to create multi-media presentations using material collected at Osmington Bay; let’s entertain! Then, we will continue programming our own games using Scratch Online to develop our logical reasoning skills and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of algorithms.

Music The girls will be composing their own songs for performance alongside listening and appraising an exciting 20th century work by Stravinsky. They can also look forward to the Summer Concert on 22nd June.

Drama The girls will work on a number of scenes from A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream. They will work in small groups or pairs to independently direct, set and perform the scenes. We will also compare and contrast the comic elements with the more serious themes in the play.
