Grammar & Spelling CheckThis week our grammar practice is a little different – instead of answering questions you will be using your knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar in context to edit and correct a text. Today, this piece of text needs editing for spelling errors. 5 errors are underlined: write the correction and explain why each is wrong. Challenge: there are 5 more errors that are not underlined, find them and correct them.
It was ridiculous! Nobody else had such a strict mother. Nobody else had such stupid limits imposd upon them. He new for definate that Colby’s mum let him go on his tablet all night long. And Radley’s mum’s boyfriend always let him play on his 18 certificate games. So why did he have to have these unfair limits on his screen time? Heavy rain ratled against his window. Even though it was early afternoon, the light was fading dramaticly. A long, slow rumble anounced the approach of the heart of the storm. At least it made a change from Mum angrily banging furniture around, the way she often did after an arguement. Crash! A bright burst of lightening was followed almost instantly by a deafaning crack of thunder. Harley jumped up and poked his head out of his door. Mum was just down the hall, shoving towels into the airing cuboard. “Are you alright, love?” she asked kindly.
Grammar and Spelling Answers
Answer
imposed – the regular past tense ending is the suffix -ed
knew – this is the past tense of ‘to know’ not the adjective/ homophone ‘new’
definite – this is from my Y5/6 common exception words: the ending is ‘ite’ like the ending of the word ‘infinity’ which I know makes an ‘i’ sound
rattled – this has a double ‘t’ because I know to double the consonant after a vowel that has a short vowel sound, with the suffix -ed for a past tense verb
dramatically – to add the ‘ly’ suffix to a word ending in ‘ic’ (dramatic), I know to add ‘ally’
announced – this is a word which I have learned with other words that begin ‘a’ and are followed by a double consonant
argument – this is an exception to the rule where you just add the suffix -ment to words ending in ‘e’ because the ‘e’ here is preceeded by a vowel. Take off the ‘e’.
lightning – this is from my Y5/6 common exception words and I know to spell it with the two syllables as you say it; ‘light’ and ‘ning’
deafening – the ‘uh’ sound is made by an ‘e’ in this word so I need to say it clearly
cupboard – this is a word that I have learned using the trick ‘cups’ go in ‘cupboards’
Monday English
This term in English, you are going to build up your knowledge of famous writers: authors, journalists, playwrights and poets. Therefore instead of having a reading comprehension and writing every day, you might have lots of reading to do one day but no writing, and lots of writing to do another day but no reading. Every week we will focus on a different writer. This week, we will start by learning about the most famous English playwright:
Answer these questions: - How many Shakespearean
Plays can you name?- Do you know any modern
films, tv shows or stories that are based on Shakespearean plays?
- Do you know any Shakespearean quotes?
Have a look on the next page to see if you could name any of these!
Some Famous Shakespearean quotes that are now well know sayings or idioms:
- Such stuff as dreams are made on - The Tempest- A heart of gold – Henry V- Wear your heart on your sleeve – Othello- Neither here nor there – Othello- Mum’s the word – Henry VI part II- Eaten our of house or home – Henry IV part II- Knock Knock! Who’s there? – Macbeth- All’s well that ends well – All’s Well That Ends Well- A wild goose chase – Romeo and Juliet
I bet you did realise you were quoting Shakespeare every time you told a knock knock joke!
Shakespeare is such an influential writer that he continues to inspire writers and film producers to this day. A story about a prince taking back the throne from his conniving, murderous uncle after his father’s death –sound familiar? That’s the plot of Hamlet, until Disney turned the characters into lions to create the Lion King! Have you seen Westside Story or Gnomeo and Juliet? Both films were inspired by Romeo and Juliet.

Todays Task: Using all this information, can you create a mind map of everything you know about Shakespeare?
