Glossary for Butterfly Life Cycle

Larvae are a young wingless form (a grub

or caterpillar) of many insects that hatches

from an egg.

Caterpillars are the larva, or young, of butterflies and

moths.

A cocoon is a covering or case made

by some animals to protect

themselves or their young as they

develop into adults.

Pupa is the stage when the insect is in the cocoon and

its body goes through changes.

Metamorphosis is the change

some animals go through where

their bodies become something

new. For example, caterpillar to butterfly.

The Desert - Glossary

Precipitation is water that falls to the earth as hail, mist, rain, sleet, or snow.

An adaptation is a special skill which helps an animal to survive and do everything

it needs to do.

Moisture is a small amount of liquid that makes something slightly wet.

Conserve means to use only as much as you need. Do not waste.

Evaporation is when water (liquid) turns to steam (gas). You can see this when you

boil a kettle.

What is a desert?

A place that is normally very hot and dry. It usually has lots of sand or rocks and it hardly ever rains.

What are the two different types of desert?

One is very hot and the other is very cold.

What is the weather like in a desert?

Hot, dry, humid or cold, not much rain/snow fall (precipitation).

Where is the Arabian desert? What countries are in the Arabian desert?

In the continent of Asia in the middle East. The United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and Qatar.

What is the largest desert? Why is Antarctica a desert?

Antarctica. It is a desert because there is not much precipitation (snowfall).

What is the hottest desert?

Sahara Desert in Africa.

What plants live in deserts?

Agave, cactus, yucca and aloe are some plants that live in deserts.

What animals live in deserts? How do animals survive in deserts?

Some animals that live in deserts are the spiny-tailed lizards, Arabian oryx, sand gazelle and camels. These aniamals survive because they have adapted (changed) their bodies to live in such hot and dry condiditons. For example, they don’t need to drink as much water.

Art Create a design using an app or a software on the computer/IPad Please complete your repeated pattern designs that you started last week (see Year 5 Topic Plan 25th – 29th January). Another copy of the Art Resource is on the next page if you need it. As a challenge to those that may have finished, I would like you to try to draw your pattern on Paint or any other drawing app you may have. (Recorded lesson available) This can be done on the computer/phone or IPad. I have recommended an app below (PicsArt Color) but make sure you first get permission from an adult if you want to download any apps.

RE Name a variety of sacred places in the world and why they are important. Here are a few examples of sacred places in the world and why they are important.

A. Kashi Vishwanath Temple, India

Kashi Vishwanath is one of the most

famous Hindu temples. It is a shrine

dedicated to Lord Shiva who is

believed to have appeared here as a

fiery column of light. Hindu people

are expected to make a pilgrimage

here at least once in their lifetime.

B. Lourdes, France

Lourdes gained fame amongst

Catholics in 1858 when the Virgin Mary

is believed to have appeared 18 times

to a local girl, Bernadette Soubirous.

Since then, Lourdes has become a

place of pilgrimage, with visitors

hoping to be healed by spring water

from the grotto.

C. Mahabodhi Temple, India

The temple of Mahabodhi is the site of

Prince Siddhartha Gautama’s ‘supreme

enlightenment’ and the moment he

became the Buddha. It is the most

sacred place of pilgrimage for

Buddhists in the world.

D. Mecca, Saudi Arabia

As the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad

and the religion he founded, Mecca is the

centre of the Islamic world. The Kaaba is

here, a cuboid building within Islam’s most

sacred mosque Al-Masjid al-Haram, which all

Muslims are expected to face when praying.

E. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia

Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the Central Australian

desert are millions of years old and have been

home to Aboriginal people for tens of

thousands of years. They believe that the land

was made by creation ancestors who have

left behind marks in the earth and a spiritual

law to guide their lives and the relationships

between people, animals and the land.

TASK: What similarities and differences do you notice between the different places?

Think about these questions:

• Which religion/s is the sacred place linked to?

• What to people do at the sacred place?

• Is it a natural structure or is it a building (man-made)?

• What beliefs are linked to the place?

• What happened in the past at this place? For example: A and B are both places where people make a pilgrimage to. E is a natural place in the desert whereas C is a man-made temple. Use the RE RESOURCE to record 2 other similarities and 2 other differences.

EXTENSION: Find out about another sacred place in the world.

F.Mount Sinai, Egypt

Of importance to the Jewish, Christian and

Islamic faiths, Mount Sinai is thought by many

to be where Moses received the Ten

Commandments from God. Saints, prophets,

pilgrims and tourists have been travelling

here for thousands of years.
