Year 5 Home Based Learning Passport
Phase 3 – Week 6 – 1.6.20
The aims of this Home Based Learning Passport is to enable children to continue with their learning whilst
there is a period of school closure. All activities are optional, but are designed to provide structure and
focus for each day. Activities are planned by teachers, based on the National Curriculum expectations
for their year group. Activities have been divided into days of the week for English and maths. This is to
help you plan your week and also to ensure that for parents of children who may be in school, they
know the activities that have been covered. If the school is closed for a number of weeks, a new Home
Based Learning Passport will be uploaded to the school website each Sunday by 6.00pm.
Please do not worry if your child becomes stuck and you cannot explain it to them. All children find
elements of learning challenging at times. An exercise book has been sent home with your child for
them to complete any activities and this can be returned to school after the period of closure.
Daily Tasks
Reading Enjoy a reading book you have at home. If you would like to take part in our “Virtual
Book Group” for Years 5 and 6, we are reading The Book at the Back of the Class by
Onjali Q Rauf and there is a reading activity based on it in the English section of this
passport.
Next week, we are going to be starting Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer.
If you have run out of books at home at the moment, JK Rowling is currently releasing
chapters of a brand new book for children, The Ickabog, on the website:
https://theickabog.com. There are new chapters being uploaded daily. There’s even a
competition to create artwork for when the book is published later in the year.
Spelling Visit the Spellotron section of our school website – http://www.stamford-
green.surrey.sch.uk/learning-zone/internal-resources/ . (Please note this needs flash
player). Make sure an adult is with you when you are using the internet. Select Year 5
and then one of the high frequency word tests within the Literacy section. Test yourself
on some of the Year 5 words and see how many you get correct. You could always re-
test yourself to see if you have improved.
Times Tables Spend some time on Times Tables Rock Stars.
This week’s Battle of the Bands tournament theme is whole school girls versus boys.
There are two battles for you to take part it:
Tue: All Boys v All Girls
Thu: All Girls v All Boys
As some children may have to share a screen at home with brothers and sisters, we
have extended the battle time to take place between 11:00am-12:00pm.
Speedy
Maths
Complete one of the speedy maths activities included at the back of the passport.
You have 5 minutes for each activity. If you have a count up timer you can record
your time as well as your score.
Maths
Monday This week, we’ve got a range of different puzzles for you to try, one each day. Think
about the skills we have used in class such as:
- Working systematically
- Trial and error / Guess and improve
- Drawing a picture to represent the problem
- Breaking the problem into small pieces and working through it bit by bit
Don’t forget to check your calculations and, if appropriate, see if you can find all the
possible answers.
https://theickabog.com/
Tuesday If you invent a good puzzle for question 3,
and an adult at home has Twitter, you could
share on the school’s Twitter feed for the rest
of Year 5 to try (@StamfordGreen
#StamfordGreenPics).
Wednesday Extra challenge: Could you create your
own puzzle like this? You could set one for
an older or younger sibling or an adult.
Think about how tricky you should make the
maths based on who you are giving the
puzzle to and make sure that it is possible to
solve your puzzle.
Thursday Extra Challenge: Have you found all of
the possible answers? How do you know
there are no more answers to find?
Friday Hints (Avoid unless you want some tips):
If you’re stuck with this one, think about
what the maximum number of people
can be in one house if the row adds up
to 15 and a different number live in
each house?
Also, how can each row of three add
up to 15 people? Is 15 an odd or even
number? What happens when you add
three odd or even numbers? e.g.:
Even + Even + Even = Even
Even + Even + Odd = Odd
Does this give you any clues on how to
combine numbers?
English
Monday Watch Mr Loughlin read from chapters 19 and 20 of The Boy at the Back of the Class.
The reading starts with ‘The man in the golden jacket…’ at the bottom of page 208:
https://youtu.be/gZsO-LsdYp4
If you missed the previous videos, you can see:
Mr Armstrong read chapter 1: https://youtu.be/Thb_MreJCbc Mrs Jayasuriya read from chapter 10: https://youtu.be/jrEyB7mHovw
(I noticed that I appear to be wearing the exact same clothes in this video, as when I
made the video for The London Eye Mystery. I would like to reassure you all that I have
washed and changed clothes throughout the lockdown – we should probably all still
be doing that! – Mr Loughlin)
Write a newspaper report that covers the incident at Buckingham Palace, where the
narrator and Tom disrupt the Changing of the Guard. (Even if you haven’t read the
book, you can use Mr Loughlin’s video as the basis for your work.) Remember to
organise your work appropriately. You may want to include a quote from an eye
witness, one of the children, a guard or a police officer to support your article. (Take
care with your speech punctuation if you do.) Don’t forget to give your article a
headline. You could even include a picture with a caption.
Ask an adult to help you upload your article to Google Classroom to get feedback
from your teacher. The guidance on how to access Google Classroom was emailed to
your parents in the week beginning 11.5.20 and is also on the school website under
‘School Closure’.

Thursday Activity 1
Activity 2
Friday Finish reading ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ so that, if an adult at home has access
to Twitter, you can join Mrs Beunderman for our book group question and answer
session by watching the school’s Twitter feed between 3-4pm on Friday 5.6.20. (Adults:
For e-safety purposes please could you remain with the children whilst they are logged
on to Twitter).
Here’s some questions that you might like to see before the Q and A session:
https://www.hayfestival.com/schools/downloads/Onjali-Q-Rauf_The-Boy-at-the-Back-
of-the-Class_Teachers-Notes.pdf
If you cannot access Twitter or have not read ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’:
• Tell somebody at home what you have enjoyed about the latest book you
read. What was it about? Who was your favourite character? Did the author do
anything clever in the story? If you could steal an idea from the book to use in
your next piece of writing, what would it be?
• Ask permission to call a family member or friend you do not live with to talk to
them about the book. If it’s a school friend, have they read the book too? Do
you have the same opinions?

Music
It’s time to dig out the Young Voices t-shirts and torches! The Young Voices company
are inviting children to join in with a singalong of ‘Power in Me’ on Tuesday 2 June at
2.30pm. You may have been practising since before half-term. If not, if you are quick
at learning words to songs, you might still be able to learn the song and take part on
the day.
You can find out more about the event by following this link to the Young Voices
website: https://www.youngvoices.co.uk/powerinme
You can download the ‘Power in Me’ song words, demo and a backing track to help
you practise: https://goto.musicroom.com/youngvoices/powerinme.html
Then, don’t forget to sing the song at home on Tuesday 2 June at 2.30pm!
If an adult at home has access to Twitter, you could post a photo of you (and your
family) singing on the school’s Twitter feed (@StamfordGreen #StamfordGreenPics).
DT You keep telling us that you enjoy the baking, cooking and measuring tasks so here is
another one. One of our design technology skills is to refine recipes, including
ingredients, methods, cooking times and temperatures.
Could you follow a recipe but see if you can refine it? What happens if you vary the
amount of sugar, flour or butter in a cake? Does it matter if you add the eggs first or
last when you are mixing? Are you making icing – what difference does the amount of
icing sugar make? Is there a difference between mixing icing sugar with water and
milk?
You could make mini-batches of fairy cakes and try something different in each batch.
PE During our PE work at school you have worked to create complex and well-executed
sequences that include a full range of movements including travelling, balances,
swinging, springing, rotations, bending, stretching and twisting.
Can you create a sequence that uses these different skills? Remember to try to
maintain poise and control. Can you link your different movements together effectively
(and gracefully)? If you are able to do this outside you might find it easier with a little
more space.
If you want an extra challenge, can you set your routine to music (like a favourite
song)? Can you teach your routine to a sibling or grown up at home? Could you put
on a performance of your routine to a family member? Maybe you could video call a
family member and show them your routine?
PSHER /
Values
Design a poster showing empathy. Some things that you could think about for your
poster:
- What empathy means.
- Words used for empathy.
- How people can show empathy.
Consider also how we would present a poster in Year 5. Does your poster have an
even, well-decorated border? Do people need to be able to read parts of your poster
from far away – if so, are those bits of writing clear to read? Is any writing in a consistent
style? Is your handwriting as neat as it can be?
If an adult at home has access to Twitter, you could post a photo of you (and your
family) singing on the school’s Twitter feed (@StamfordGreen #StamfordGreenPics).

Mindfulness- Wellbeing
Monday Mindful Awareness - Brain Breaks
You can be guided through a brain break at home with Mrs Smith by clicking on this
link https://twitter.com/StamfordGreen/status/1245003717415522304 or going to the
school’s closure page and clicking the link in useful information.
Draw a scene of when you have/would need to take a brain break at home. Label the
picture and write about why you would choose to take a Brain Break in the situation
you have drawn. Next time that situation happens at home, you may choose to take a
Brain Break.
Tuesday Our Brains- Connection Game
This is a great family game! One player starts by saying a word, the next player then
says a word that connects to the previous word. You keep taking it in turns to say
another word that connects to each previous one. When you cannot think of any
more words in that connection, start the game again with a new word.
You could use the list below to help you or start with one of your own.
Amygdala

Wednesday Mindful Listening - Sound Hunt
You and your family are ‘great sound explorers’ and going on a mission to notice as
many sounds as you can. Quietly keep track of the sounds you hear by drawing or
writing the sounds (during or after your quest). For contrast, try this with your eyes open
and then later with eyes closed. How does each sound make you feel or react?
Thursday Mindful Movement - Call and Response
A game of follow the leader. One person should start a clap or tap rhythm, for
example waving or patting your head and get the other person to copy it back to
you. After 30 seconds or so, change the movement you are doing. Try out different
rhythms and patterns. Use different parts of your body, like your feet or patting your
knee. You can switch who leads the call and who and copies. Be as creative as you
can.
Friday Mindful Attitude - Turn Your Frown Upside Down
Draw a circle on a piece of paper and a face with a downturned smile to make a
frown.
Now turn the piece of paper upside down. What happens to the frown? Keeping the
paper upside down, write down or draw all the things you can do to help turn your
frown into a smile! It’s a good idea to keep this list so when you are next feeling a little
sad, you could choose something from your ‘Turn Your Frown Upside Down’ list to help
yourself feel better and smile.
Family
Challenge
Be a ‘secret angel’ for someone else in your house this week. Secretly, each member
of your house needs to pick a name out of a pot which will decide who you should be
a secret angel for.
https://twitter.com/StamfordGreen/status/1245003717415522304
The mission is to do little acts of kindness for the person you chose out of the pot all
week without them catching you in the act. Examples of some of the things you could
do include:
- paying someone a compliment
- leaving a little treat out for them
- helping them tidy up
- leaving them a little note to say what you love about them
